SpaceX's IFT-2 mission, launched November 18, 2023, tested the Starship launch system with these key goals:
* Hot Staging:* Successful maneuver where some booster engines shut down mid-flight, then reignited before separating Starship, saving fuel and reducing stress.
* Near-Orbital Flight:* Starship aimed higher than the previous test, reaching ~250km but not achieving full orbit, evaluating its potential for future missions.
* Controlled Re-entry and Landings:* Both Starship and the booster aimed for controlled water landings to test heat shields and re-entry procedures.
* Unexpected Outcome:* Sadly, the Super Heavy booster exploded (RUD) during re-entry, while Starship successfully landed despite facing aerodynamic challenges.
* Overall:* Despite the booster's fate, IFT-2 gathered valuable data on Starship's performance, allowing engineers to learn and improve for future interplanetary ambitions.
