I have an Acura MDX 2008 with 165K+ miles. Absolute reliable car. Yeah, the BT issue, I replaced the module when the problem was starting and got a brand new unit at a very reasonable price, Then, I modify the wiring to prevent the BT from being powered 24x7. With the mod, the BT module is only powered when the vehicle is in use. The new module is already over 8-yrs old and working as new. For the transmission, I have always used AMSOIL ATF, always smooth shifting and no noises.

09 MDX owner here with 180,000 miles and here's the list of non-maintenance I've replaced (I perform the work on all my vehicles). -Replaced bank 1 catalytic converter (firewall side). The ECU wasn't throwing any codes because it was still working, but the baffles inside the converter worked themselves loose, and made noise. -Replaced upstream and downstream bank 1 catalytic converter oxygen sensors (ECU was throwing a code, and oxygen sensors should be replaced in pairs upper / lower). -Replaced J-pipe since the flex section rusted out. Replacement J pipe is a 304 stainless one from RV6 Performance which I highly recommend. -Replaced valve cover gasket on bank 2 (gasket was leaking and dripping oil onto the alternator). While replacing the gasket, I adjusted the valve clearances and replaced spark plug tube gaskets as well since the vale cover was already off. -Replaced A/C compressor at 178,000 miles (outer bearings went). Since the car had 178,000 miles, and the AC system was apart, I also replaced the evaporator, TXV, condenser, AC lines, dryer / desiccant element, radiator, radiator piping, and thermostat. None of these items had issues, but I wanted to be on the safe side. -Replaced front half shaft on passenger side (CV boot was leaking) Things I still need to do: -Replace all shocks (seals are no longer functioning properly and leaking). Overall, it's been a good vehicle to me, and knowing what I know now, I'd still buy it again despite the repair items listed above.

I own an 04, 07 and 08 MDX. Key take aways: 1) only put 91 or above octane, 2) follow the recommended service internals except the oil - replace oil/filter every 3k-4k especially over 200k mi on OD, 3) use honda oe grade txsm and dual pump fluid - all else what ever you want as long as meets spec, 4) MPG van be respectable on HWY but mind driving with care, 5) BT module is a common issue, 6) sport models with electronic shocks need down graded to OEM base.

One additional issue that seems to plague the 07 to 09 MDX is the roof leaking in the rear under the roof molding. I had the leak and after some research I realized I was not the only one. The leak occurs because they didn't seal the seam between the roof and the quarter panel with enough sealant and over time it shrinks and starts to leak down the inside rear of the car. Most people note it's only the drivers side but I had both sides leak on mine. The fix is pretty straight forward. Remove the molding and add more sealant to the seams. I used a rubberized spray sealant and it fixed the leak. This biggest issue it causes is, on the drivers side, it tends to leak onto the rear fuse block and and causes corrosion which then will start sending codes about the AWD system. Thanks for the other tips.

That's a great point. There's an old saying that treating your engines like a baby will only make it run like a baby. My 2012 MDX has been great since I bought it new and it is never low on oil. Of course I change my oil and air filter regularly but I also 'air it out' regularly as well, usually on a nice long highway on-ramp in sport mode. I love this car. I have a 2009 with 240000 miles on it. I used this car repeatedly until 2015. My only issue was the battery drain. With the first 6 months battery kept draining. The battery drain was due to the A/C relay being stuck on on. I think it blew the compressor. Replaced at the stealership. I search the net for reasons for battery drain and found it to be related to the Bluetooth thing in the mid hand rest. Disconnected it but for some reason my battery still drained. I have to note that sometime when I close the door while sitting in the car I can hear like an electrical arch through the radio. Still this is the best car I have. It grips the road like a panther. Have a 2013 MDX, bought it new. Just spent $2000 getting a bunch of the exterior seals replaced. Water was leaking into the interior, to the point that my carpets were soaked and there was heavy condensation on the inside of the windows Apparently the joints between metal panels is spot welded and some kind of resin is put between the panels to make it water tight. It failed in spectacular fashion and the water ingress was substantial. The mechanic who fixed it has a Honda Odyssey and he said his van did the same thing. He showed me the staining on the headliner and A-pillar, and around the rear hatch. Looks like Honda has some issues to sort out, I won't be buying another.

We've had our 2011 since 2017. Only issue has been 1 bad fuel injector. Car does consume oil. I went in twice to the Acura dealership to do an oil consumption test, and each time the result came back as "acceptable" (about 1 quart every 1500 miles). That wasn't acceptable to me. I did some research and ended up running Liqui-Moly Engine Flush through the oil twice over a period of 3,000 miles. Oil came out black as ink. Oil consumption reduced dramatically after this (maybe 1 quart every 3000 miles now). I also now only use high-mileage oil and I change it every 3000 miles instead of the interval recommended by the trip computer. I am convinced most of the issues can be avoided with more frequent oil changes. Engine is high compression though so some oil consumption is not unusual. Otherwise they are excellent cars.
@AllenManorАй бұрын
Minor update about 1 year later -- oil consumption appears to have slightly increased. Car has about 96,000 miles on it, very low for a 13-year-old vehicle. It's frustrating. Also, clear coat is peeling in a few areas. I had a 1991 Acura Legend that I sold in 2008 and no paint problems, no oil consumption -- with 160,000 miles on the odometer. We'll be selling our MDX before it hits 100,000, with full disclosure to the buyer about the oil consumption issue.

I bought my 2011 MDX 3 years ago with 138,000 miles. Noticed shortly after it was using oil @ a rate of 1Qt per 1000 miles. Yikes! Discovered this was a common problem for this generation but made some attempts to solve the issue. Changed pcv valve, nothing, used seafoam in the crankcase and gas, nothing. So I gave up for awhile till I was adding a Qt every third fill up or 600 miles. Hitting the web again I ran across Marvel Mystery Oil. Sounds interesting but still sceptical since seafoam didn’t phase it any. But the more I read about it and many old school mechanics swore by it, won’t hurt to try it. I was down a Quart at 5he time so I put a quart in crankcase and 8 Oz in the tank on each fill. And ran it for the last 1000 miles of my oil change. After that one time incident I am now at 3000 miles per Qt. I will definitely be treating my oil again with Marvel Mystery Oil and see if we get to no adding between oil changes. I am totally amazed. This stuff works.

I wasn’t mad at that at that time because I needed a 7 seat car but didn’t want a minivan. The car was amazing in its first year. I pretty much loved everything about it and although it’s not so good on gas and getting lots of miles but I loved it. However in summer 2022 I found out that the car was burning oil like an industrial factory. All I had to do was either change oil or refill it which lasted for about a 1000 miles or more. Also the fact that the car uses premium fuel is another pain in the ass but I don’t care no more. The car is now 218k miles and planning to keep it for another half a year hoping the engine doesn’t blow up for some reason. I love the car tho, it doesn’t drive like it used to but I still love it.

I'm at 290+, great little SUV, the oil consumption problem is the way Honda has their PCV System designed. There's not enough vacuum to pull the hot blowby gases away from the ring pack and it turns the oil to carbon sticking the rings and now you end up with oil consumption. I don't have the problem bc I used a 10W-30 Group IV syn and drove long distance so the small amount of vac worked. 10W-20 is too thin to do the job but the low vac is the main problem. It needs -1 to -2inHg and factory is only -.2 to -.6inH2O hot/idle. That's not enough to sweep fresh air into the crankcase and pull the blowby away form the rings. I've since changed mine and added a Catch Can. BTW, your engine isn't going to blow up, odds are slim to none.

Secondly yes it’s horrible when you’re driving city and your foot is heavy on the gas. On a well-maintained, smooth riding 2012 with 80,000 miles on it,I get about 13 to 16 city. But highway I can get up to 23. For a 300hp V6 heavy car, I don’t think that’s horrible. Power when you want it and It tows great. Aside its little problems, I love this suv. Thankfully I haven’t had any of the issues he’s mentioned here. Other ones yes, none mentioned here. The issues are minor compared to many newer cars. Like he says every car has their issues. I think this is the best balance of luxury price and dependability. We’re keeping it as a third car. If you can find a good one, I wouldn’t sweat these issues.

You must not know Hondas. Oil burning is a issue with Hondas across the board the vtec system burns oil. My girlfriends 2010 MDX is coming up at 161k miles. No issues besides the ac compressor literally exploding. But that was covered under her gap insurance. So that saved us almost $4K. The entire system had to be replaced. I have a 04 V6 6MT TL type S swapped accord and a lifted 03 toyota tundra. And her MDX is the most reliable but iv kept it stock so that's probably why.07/14 MDX all have the 3.7L V6 and oil burning issues I use penzoil platinum and I haven't seen any issues with oil consumption

Hey Chris thanks alot for compiling all the Info around the MDX I can tell you must own one and are going about doing some repairs. Trust me I get it, it's exactly what I have been doing with mine for the last year. It's an 09 and was tracking the charging system errors. Just a quick question if you don't mind. Am I safe with the 09 about the oil burning issue. And does that specifically start in 2010 I just had mine I'm the acura shop and the mechanic said to me just to make sure mine wasn't burning oil and I should be in good shape. So now I'm trying to make sure I don't have this issue pop up on me. Thanks for any advise and thanks for taking the time to put this info together! Peace ✌️

Hey there! Thanks for stopping by. As far as I know, you should be good. A few tell tell signs of burning oil would be that the catalytic converter has been replaced under 200k miles, multiple fouled 02 sensors, and possible burn marks on the dip stick. Make sure there are maintenance records, especially if you are spending a good amount of money. Peace of mind is important.
@tsmitherz212 жыл бұрын
@@AutoMotivate sure man no I think it looks good so far then... there are pretty much all of thr oil changes with the dealer then outside that. Doesn't seem to have much done to it as far as repairs and it wasn't beat up. So then so far so good. I have it back it working order. Again you're aware of this being an issue with the 2010 model correct?

Now I know all the problems I have to look forward to with my 2010 that is at 188k. There is an oil leak at the oil filter adapter that I will replace the gasket next oil change and thought it was the oil issue. Now that I know these vehicles are known for burning oil it's probably that. But no PS leak, yet....

Great video bro. I have a 2012, with 74k. Really liking it so far, but definitely want to stay on top of the maintenance. I like working on cars anyways. There is a slight ticking(wouldn't call it tapping or knocking) , upon acceleration sometimes, but I cannot for the life of me get it to consistently happen. When it does happen tho, it seems like mostly always on acceleration from a stop. It's that "old truck motor" sound lol. But only sometimes. Gonna change the oil in the next few days and I'll report back. Think it could be any exhaust pieces?
@AutoMotivate2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! If the ticking is caused by the exhaust, it would typically get louder as the engine warms up. If the ticking is very inconsistent and not matching with the engine itself, it’s worth seeing if the accessories are causing the noise. Other than that, valves can tap due to poor lubrication from old/dirty oil. Tapping could also be caused from the chain. Many situations could cause it. Hopefully a clean oil change would help!

Great info!. Do you have any idea how the cv axel and boots get worn? The Boot is leaking break fluid... seemed really strange, its hard to tell where the oil was leaking from. 2007-2009 mdx?
@AutoMotivate3 жыл бұрын
CV axles connects the wheel hub to the transmission. When the boots tear, which happens over time or if something punctures it, the grease from the boot can leak out and cause the joint to seize up. There shouldn't be any break fluid leaking, from my knowledge, If you are leaking brake fluid, that should be coming from the caliper, so check that.
@remy690343 жыл бұрын
If it's the inside boot, specially on the passenger side, it's usually the transmission output shaft seal. They slowly seep fluid sometimes.

@mrgold35912 жыл бұрын
No transmission issue. That was with the 1st Gen 01-06 model years with the 5AT. The 07-09 with the 5AT and the 10-13 MDX (and the 3rd Gen 14-15 MDXs) transmission were pretty solid. The 16-17 MDXs with the 9AT had some quirky shifting issues that was later fixed with hardware and software upgrades. The 9AT was solid again for the 18-20 MDX. The Sport Hybrid 7DCT for the 17-20 model years is probably the best transmission for the entire model run. The only downside is you can't tow with the 7DCT.

@@mrgold3591 the 07-09 is pretty solid however it has torque converter issues and rough shift issues. mine only does it in winter if car has not warmed up. it was happening in warm weather before i got my fluid flushed. almost 40k later and its still fine

@@nikmacintosh1190 That just might be age related. My 5AT in my 06 TSX (+175,000 miles) and 5AT 08 RDX (+196,000 miles) had some occasional shifting issues; but, they fix themselves with fluid changes.
