Just a heads up, the HD6XX went up in price right as DMS was putting this vid together. It's now $279. Still an easy headphone to recommend at that price but not as crazy good value as before.

I thought I was missing something myself as I recorded a video just yesterday and checked the price for reference and I was like "was this always $279? 🤷‍♂But to be honest, I think the $280 bracket is still more suited for the 6xx. I would still Recommend It even at $300 tbh. I still prefer them to my sundaras and I LOVE the sundaras. But there's lots of complexities and subjectivity to consider when making statements like that. ✌ - Obsidian

Curious as to where you got your perspective of the DT990 Pro as being "notoriously bad in the audio community". I could not find anyone sharing that same negative sentiment. Those in the audio community definitely recommend more expensive headphones, but in the sub $175 range, I couldn't find anyone knocking them but most saying they are possibly the value king for that price range. Revisiting this video, the graph presented for the DT990 pro seems significantly harsher than other graphs I've seen for the same headphone; crinacle's, for example (also the 250 ohm version), measures very similar to the TYGR 300 R, which is recommended in this very video. Is it possible that Beyerdynamic have changed the DT990 pro's treble response since you got your pair back in 2017?

This video was brought to my attention, and after watching it I felt compelled to comment on the information presented therein. As a professional audio engineer with 30 years of experience in the music industry, I completely disagree with the views expressed within this clip. The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro headphones are tuned for a specific purpose, being monitoring in professional environments.The reason that the highs are accentuated is to allow for critical evaluation of the top-end during certain procedures of mixdown and/or mastering processes. They are monitors designed for PROFESSIONAL applications, not gaming. For someone to come out and make such bold statements like what we observed in this video is somewhat irresponsible, and it clearly illustrates their lack of knowledge in this field.

I completely second the 560s recommendation. It's like a more detailed, analytically-oriented version of the pc38x. Comparable imaging, but with no boomy bass drowning out sound cues. The flat response also makes it a bit of a swiss-army-knife. It does it all; movies, games, conference calls-- everything sounds correct. It's probably the best value in audio for entry level consumers looking for a jack-of-all-trades headphone that requires minimal amplification investment. The 6xx has a particular niche (music), and it doesn't come to life until you give it specialized gear. Also worth checking out is the Beyer 900 pro x. Unlike the Tygr, it has a flat response and detachable cable. It's currently only $159 for a B-stock unit when purchased through the Beyer outlet sale, and runs at 45 ohms. When you consider the cost of a dac/amp setup, this makes it a strong value contender. Worth noting though, is that a flat response is more desirable for competitive gamers. Casual gamers will prefer the immersion created by the bassy tunings of the pc38x and TYGR

560s is not the best for movies without an EQ; the upper mids are shouty so voices sound nasally and honky, and most film bass is geared towards the mid bass which is "too accurate" on the 560.
@bla_ank
@bla_ank 2 жыл бұрын
@@warmlycalculated390 Sure, it’s not the absolute best, but the angled drivers and relatively wide staging give it more of an airy ‘speaker room’ presentation when compared to the intimate, “3 blob” effect produced by 6 series senns. An EQ tweak is easier to pull off than changing the way a headphone presents sound. I personally didn’t notice any honk issues or nasal qualities, but I’ve heard that perception of the 560’s sound will vary depending on how it’s seated on the user’s head. This might factor in to why we both perceive it differently, but we may just have different preferences.

I don't get the hate. DT990 PRO sounds good to me right out of the box with no EQ. It sounds good when I hooked it up to JDS Labs Element III MK 2 for DAC/AMP. It sounds even better when I chain Element III to Accuphase pre-amp for headphone output. It is transparent, has good and fast bass, excellent soundstage and imaging. I love it and it is less than $250 CAD. I actually refunded Hifiman Sundara before I bought DT990 PRO. Lucky enough to be able to audition DT770 PRO from a friend and I knew immediately Beyerdynamic is what I like. I'm personally a huge fan of the AKG K371. It is just unusually revealing in the bass and midbass regions so poor quality track encoding or poor quality mixing/mastering/recordings will sound very odd on the K371. It's been on sale for a bit now at around $110 and it's a great value at that price. Stage is very wide but not spectacularly deep. Imaging is also good and sound sources are placed accurately. Detail retrieval is also good throughout its FR and it has some nicely managed treble gain with an anti-fatigue notch that keeps it from being overly harsh or shouty. It's also only 32ohm and high sensitivity, making it trivially easy to drive. The extra bass gain that they got from the large driver in a sealed design also doesn't go amiss for gaming applications where you want to feel the punchy bass of gunfire or the rumble of an aggressively bassy background track. If you don't own this set then you should consider at least finding a shop near you to demo it at. It's pretty special and the price is very competitive. They even make a bluetooth version.

@@mrnelsonius5631 idk. The ones I got my friend came from Guitar Center. Quality seemed a bit on the low side for a "premium" product, but easily in line for the actual cost of the headphones. Seemed reasonably well made and very comfortable despite the lack of foam in the headband pad. The air cushion seems to work just fine and the ear pads are comfy and have pretty minimal clamping force, so they're not ideal for activities, but they are comfortable enough to wear for hours.

@@mrnelsonius5631 The K361 are definitely a cheaper variant, so maybe they are reviews on that one? Not sure. The K361 are still good headphones, just with a much lighter and more plastic-forward build. They are also more bass-heavy and have a muddier, less resolving sound signature. Not bad, but not as good as the K371, in my opinion. All else fails, I'd just buy them from a trusted seller and wait the extra shipping time to get them. Unfortunately, it looks like their pricing (as of October 22, 2022) has returned to around $175, which is considerably more expensive than I paid a few months ago. I still think they're a competitive offering even at that price, but then you're no longer at the "buy it just to see" kind of throwaway price point.

Not only we pursuit high resolution performances, we also love to try different, maybe even interesting, sounds from different headphones. And that is what DT 990 Pro famous for because they are indeed delivering very accurate sound image and extraordinary soundstage, and they are absolutely Hi Res headphones! The Tygr 300 R is ok, but not my cup of tea at all, very sterile and no musicality like the DT880 Pro but even more "mellow". My 990 Pro was a bit sibilant initially but after the pads wore in it sounds very balanced which is what a lot of others also say. I replaced the pads once, but that brought back the harsh highs so I just kept the old pads on, problem solved. Wanna have a good and cheap pair of headphones that have great imaging, are light and open and non-intrusive? Get some Apple earpods for $15. If you want something with similar mids but with even more bass and slightly more treble, then try to find somewhere that has the AKG K371 on demo. It's a pretty cheap set and the performance is pretty staggering at that price. I like the HD6XX and the HD650, but the bass from the K371 is just so deep and detailed that it's hard not to fall in love with them even when you have something like the HD6XX. The K371 may not be the most neutral tuning, but it does a lot of things right. If you like EDM, techno, glitch, or dubstep then you need a set of K371. They're something special and they've been hovering around $110 for a bit now. The only thing that the HD650 and HD6XX do definitively better is stage transparency, and this is largely because they're open-backed. You get more stage depth and the staging feels more natural on the HD650 and HD6XX compared to the K371. That isn't to say that the K371 lacks stage width, but it does lack some depth and it's sealed enclosures lend the staging to feel more artificial, if that makes any sense.

I have the DT990 Edition, and I really don't like them. As the reviewer mentioned, the treble is sooooo harsh it's almost unbearable. I wonder how Management at Beyerdynamic let the 990 go to market. Did they not at least have a listen before deciding whether it's ready to be launched? Since I can't return them, I've EQ'd my 990 Editions to the point where they've at least become usable. I've cranked the sub-bass frequencies up and lowered the treble frequencies to their lowest setting on the EQ (Yes, that's how harsh and sibilant the treble is on these!). Honestly, I can't recommend the 990 Edition or the 990 Pro (basically the same headphones) to anyone except perhaps gamers who can EQ the headphones and really want that spatial-feeling sound provided by open-back headphones...

Everyone says fatiguing or sibilant like it’s something to avoid. I have a 990 and yes I can’t listen for hours but sometimes you just want to listen to music for 30 minutes or hour max and put it down and the extra treble can bring out interesting dynamics in music other phones can’t. Now if you’re looking for an all-rounder and have a strict budget no it’s a bad choice. If you collect headphones like I do it should be in everyone’s collection.

why would anyone want to mix with a headphone that has a ridiculously exaggerated sibilant profile... Studio headphones are supposed to be balanced, that's the entire purpose of using them as opposed to regular listening headphones which usually boost frequencies either in the bass, treble, or both as is the case with the DT990's
@LETTMusic

Been into music production for over a decade. I've been through Sennheiser, Audio Technica and more brands. The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pros are the most comfortable headphones I've ever bought, have the best soundstage for producing music on, and I never get ear fatigue when listening for long sessions. I'm sorry, but starting off with 'the headphone is notoriously bad in the audio community' is pretty much false. There's almost nothing but praise for the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pros across the entire music production community, the mixing/mastering audio engineer community, and more. Also, the DT 990 Pros have as balanced, if not more of a frequency curve as any of the models you listed. The HiFiMAn's have a way harsher boost between 8-10kHz. The Sennheisers all have low and high end boosts as well. Almost every model of headphones has the smile curve boosts of the low and high end. It's misleading to point it out in the DT 990s, with zero reference to how that exists in every other model you suggested.

A DT 990pro needs an amplifier. It’s not for a phone. A DT990 has a couple of different ohm versions. The regular 250ohm version does not sound overly bright. A DT990 can be bought new for 130 euro now a days. That’s a complete no brainer. I can easily say there is no better for the money. It’s the first step into the audiophile world. In the past I had a Sennheiser hd650. In the end the DT990 stayed and the Sennheiser left. It’s unbeatable for the price. Still use it for making music.

Can't agree with you on this one, I have DT990 Pro, HD560S, PC38X; yes DT990 Pro can be tiresome to hear, but just like on gaming monitors, a wash out black give you the ability to see enemies on dark places or a exaggerated red tint allows you to see easier hit damage cues on faster TN panels, what can give that edge on gaming is a headphone that is very edgy on these frequencies... but for hardcore competitive gaming, for casual or longer gaming sessions you will be ok with any headphone. PC38X it is more wide and has very nice imaging but is not up to par to do it as precise and sharp than DT990P Same with HD560S where its soundstage is like a egg is not well balanced at 9 and 2 o'clock is weird... DT990P its a round circle, same with PC38X but blurrier for positional sound cues. Using acoustic foam can make DT990P more comfortable to listen, I acknowledge it's sharp but advantageous for competitive gaming, personally I do casual long sessions multiplayer games and I go with PC38X, but when the lobby gets sweaty and I need wall hacks, DT990 Pro without a doubt.

Why not indeed! If you're FPS gaming only, the DMS recommendations are spot on. If movies, music, and games with cinematic soundtracks make up a good portion of your listening, then DMS has a minority opinion among audiophiles I think. The Beyerdynamic 770, 880, or 990 are the #1 best choice for mixed listening assignments, in the $200 and under range. If you do a lot of competitive FPS but still mixed listening, the HD560s could be best choice. Because they'll be good at music and movies too. 👉🏼If music is your #1 and all you care about is "good enough" for movies and gaming, then I'd say that it's a no-brainer to go for HD58X or a Hifiman 400/4XX series.

Saying they are bad is just nonsense.. these are not consumer headphones. These frequency boosts are meant to make certain frequencies easier to identify for engineers and producers. Trying to use studio/mixing headphones to have a beautiful experience is like taking a submarine to win a sailing regatta or a tank to win a race. Same goes for studio monitors. And im pretty sure some gamers use these headphones and monitors not because they want to hear beautiful things but because they want an edge in the game doe to the clarity and quality of the headphones making them hear and identify things more easily. But i guess that concept goes over your head
