I told one of my 8th grade students that I had a prep period and she said, “What do you have to prepare for?!” My jaw dropped. Literally everything. I have to prepare for literally everything.

Thank you for making content like this. There's a side of teaching that requires a lot of soft skills that you don't learn inside a teacher preparation program. You only then begin to learn them through experience.

Thank you. I totally agree, so much of teaching is learning as you go.

Couldn't agree more. Most of the learning happens in the classroom! (For students and us)

THANK YOU! It's such a shock for every teacher when they enter the field just *HOW MUCH* we all do on the day-to-day. I might only be 23 years old but I feel like a mom to many of my middle schoolers. They see me more than their own families! I just posted a similar video, entitled #FirstYearTeacherAdvice. I learned so much in my first year teaching ESL Middle School Social Studies. *TEACHERS ROCK*

I love this! Thank you for highlighting some of the other things we have to do outside of actual teaching. Love your channel and videos!

I was honestly so shocked by how much I had to do every day as a teacher when I first started. No one prepares you for it or really tells you what is expected. This is a great video and will hopefully be helpful to many new teachers!

You mentioned you didn't go to school for education - what is your degree in? How can you become a teacher without a degree in education? Please keep up your videos! I love them so much!!

I have learned thus far that I could have both my passions-teaching and photography! I am a teacher and on the side I have a business taking photos 😊 we teachers do A LOT 🤣

I just found you, and WOW! You are such an amazing teacher, and I heard about your break you took and I’m so glad you’re back! I’m going to be a Senior this fall and I believe I want to get into secondary education and specialize in math, and if I do, I want to be like you 😊. Please keep making these videos and being the person you are!

“It’s not really volunteering because it’s required but-” as I’m getting ready to start college in the fall for mid level education, I’m realizing that is pretty much the epitome of teaching. Currently in high school, I have one teacher up to her ears in prom preparations (and grades that are not in and are due in two hours as I'm writing this 🙃) and a teacher who is supposed to be planning a bulk of graduation but isn’t because he’s retiring in two months and has been doing this crap for decades.

Well, you just put everything we do as teachers and can't put it under one category in one place. I've always wanted to make this collective list to keep me organized and keeping up. Loads of thanks for the video ♥️ P. S: You're really funny and I love your vibe 😍☮️

Hi Mrs Parker-Smith, thank you for sharing your insight on what teachers do outside their jobs. Some may think teachers don't have lives outside their jobs but, they certainly do. I also checked out your teaching vlog from two weeks ago and left a positive comment.

I just recently got done my student teaching. I taught 9-12th grade math... What is your take on grading homework? Do you check every single problem a night for accuracy or do you check a random question a night and grade their homework in that matter? I hope this question made sense!
@GlitteryCassie3 жыл бұрын
My sister is a high school math teacher, and for her, it depends on the students and the subject. If it is a really important, core concept, she'll grade every question for accuracy so she knows if the students are learning. For students who are more independent, she only checks a few random questions. For things like simple review questions, she just grades on completion. Hope this helps!

I’d be interested to see your spreadsheet for standards. I’m student teaching this year and still trying to figure out how I want to organize myself.

What did you go to school for besides teaching? I am graduating in May and I have decided I want to be a math teacher. I am going to be taking my praxis ASAP and then I can get an emergency certificate to teach while I get a masters in education. Is this what you are doing?

It is so wrong that teachers have to get a second job because of the low pay. I teach in Australia and we get paid a decent wage, not what other professionals do, but a lot more than most US teachers. I don't know any teachers here that have second jobs. I'm sure there are, but it is not common.
