I've been having all of this when I started indie game development, I released my first game on January and let me just tell you that it was not fun making it happen, but when people played it, reviewed it and enjoyed it, it just feels so good you know?, that's why I promised my self not to ever quit game development, it's so precious!

This is SPOT ON. I've made simple games in Flash back in High School to some fanfare, but am working on a ginormous Action RPG right now as my first Unity project. For years I keep getting "Is it done yet? What's taking so long? You're tired? Just take a few days off working on it!" It can be hard growing up loving game development with nobody who can relate being in your circle. My game is taking forever but it's a passion project that I love to death, and will continue to love whether or not it winds up making money or getting good reviews. Awesome vid man, so happy I found your channel :)

I'm past the wanting to quit phase. I'm at the "Too far to quit now" part. Also being a software developer as my day job really helps. I use the same exact development methodologies to work on my game. So many times I wanted to just ice my game but I've already invested so much. I WILL say you will encounter the doldrums every now and then where you just don't want to work on your game for days, sometimes weeks at a time.

I can relate soooo much to that last point where people won't understand hahahaha! I just finished my thesis animation. It's "only" 3 minutes long, but I had to do almost everything by myself while juggling school and my internship. It took almost a year for the whole process and everyone was always like "aren't you done yet? you've been working on that forever" and in my parent's minds it was like I was doing nothing in front of the computer when the reality was that I was working on it all the time. I barely even slept and when I did, it would be on a pull out bed next to my laptop. Even more, I'm not even an animation student. But it was all worth it in the end. I even remember listening to your videos as I worked to pump me up for when I could finally start making a game of my own (which I'm starting now)

I'm usually fascinated at the idea of creating games, but one thing that keeps hitting me every time I think about game development is that I'm not good at art. Art/Design is like the hardest thing I know. The attention to detail, color combinations, shape morphing, everything. Bottom line is, I love game design, character arts, environments, game plots. I'm usually excited by them and as much as I love them, trying to learn these basic skills for game design is like trying to triangle into a square hole. I really don't know how else to be a part of the gaming industry without feeling like I'm forcing things while learning stuff.

About the imposter syndrom. In Kaamelott, a french series, Cesar told to the hero who just got a promotion as general this sentence: "Nobody deserve to be a General. We reach this by a succession of lucky circumstances. The secret is pretending that you are a great General. And if you pretend well enough. One day, you'll don't have to pretend anymore."

I’ve finally decided to delve into making my game that I’ve been “gently concepting” for the last 3 years. I recently discovered Hollow Knight years after it’s release, and felt incredibly disheartened as the art style and theme was quite similar to what I wanted to make, without ever having seen hollow knight. I realised that it was a blessing in disguise though, as now I get to look at what makes my concept unique and really push those limits, and get out of my comfort zone. It’s caused me to think about my game a whole lot differently, to research what I’ve loved so much in other games (Windwaker being one of my top faves, so thanks for including it in your video). I have also dealt with a lot of my own past trauma and mental health issues, rediscovered my real self, and I have a mental health toolbox to ensure I can continue healing along the way and stay passionate and fulfilled. Most of the concept elements are now just falling into place. Now to start learning Unity and build my dream! ✨ And I hope someone who reads this, might one day wind up playing a game about Nym, a one-of-a-kind little bug discovering their purpose 💚

Thomas Brush I hope you read this man, Right now I'm kind of going through the tutorial purgatory and I feel like there is nothing that is actually teaching me how to make a game. There's all these tutorials that I can follow and copy through. This especially negatively affects me when I'm trying to edit coding scripts. I have yet to see anything that is actually telling me what all these common terms within programming languages actually mean in regards to the actual video game. I simply want to find tutorials that can break down the process of making a video game into what I truly need to know. It's so frustrating for me because I'm out here in Japan, I work ridiculous hours (thanks to the oh so wonderful USMC), I'm married. I'd love to go to school when I get out (2 more years), but I'd love to also not waste 4 years of college if more than half of it is bullshit. What the hell do I need to do to start making my own video game? I have Unity, Visual Studio 2019 as well as Visual Studio Code Text Editor. All I want to do is create video games and make my dream a reality. Also, no project or idea is too large for me. If I can visualize it, I can do it. That is my philosophical belief, that I can drive myself to accomplish anything, but what resources should I really follow? I know it was long to read, but I would really appreciate the time if you have it. Sincerely, A discombobulated, uneducated, want-to-be game maker with a substantial amount of undying passion to want to be successful as a real game developer

As someone with experience in doing projects by myself in various fields, including programming: just start a project, and follow it to the end. As you have questions, ask google, ask discord, ask stackexchange. Since the questions are to problems you really want to solve, you'll learn. However, some projects are too large, yes. You could make the next Witcher 3, but it'd take 100 years for you alone (probably more), and you'd give up obviously. Know your limitations. This is the most common pitfall with gamedev and many other endeavors, people are megalomaniacal and then burnout and give up. Start with small simple games. The first will be basic. The second will build on it. And the third, and the fourth.

This is the truth. Imposter Syndrome and anxiety will kill a personal project and your 9 to 5 work if you let it. I'm self-taught and work in web dev and I can't tell you how many nights I lay awake dreaming about things I did "wrong" that day. The crazy part is that even when the things you stressed yourself out about never happen or you end up getting praise, you still just say "Oh, that's just luck" or some other list of self-defeating thoughts. All I can say is he is right. If you are feeling this way. If you feel like you are not good enough and have anxiety about your work, reach out to your supervisor or someone you trust at work and get some honest feedback. Keep trying things until you can find something that helps take your mind away from anxiety. The thing that's helping me the most lately is knowing that the more you do something, the less anxiety inducing that it will be. At the same time, you will inevitably try doing other new things that trigger your anxiety. Maybe have a touch stone of something you can do now with complete confidence that you used to have anxiety about and remind yourself how you used to feel and how you feel now about that task. Anyone else feel like they want to go down the solo creator/ entrepreneur route just so they don’t have to meet the expectations of their managers? I often feel like I want to go this path for this very reason.

Wonder what you would say if someone is confident about their game? Not cocky but just as they build the game their affirmation stays with them.

I am AWESOME at starting projects! The rest....sigh. Number 2 made me sub. That's me. Dammit, I'm gonna go back and finish one of my games. Thank you, sir! Also, "Bad reviews come from people who played your game. Dolla dolla bills y'all!" - EA, or someone else entirely.

I just wanna make a 2D platformer game where you can alter the physics of the world around you into 3 or maybe 4 variants. I think that's a decent scope of main gameplay features for a first game, and I can toy with combat mechanics later if I want, but those would definitely be secondary. For now, Mario with physics manipulation instead of a fire flower. Luckily I'm not too worried about being an imposter since my first job showed me that all of management and senior developers were imposters too lol

So, I'm at the mental illness portion and I want to come out and say that I recently got diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which might explain why I get all excited about a game concept for a month or two before giving up on it for months if not years because of a depressive mood.

Great video, I'm brand new to game development and looking to get into it as a side gig/ hobby. I dont expect to make a living off it but I didn't realize going in just how much time it will require. Would love some feedback on the money side for small time developers, is it worth all the time to learn and create?

The second point is helpful, but your game paid off with big reviews and very positive reception. Whah happens after you’ve completed a game after 4 years and then nobody likes it and your payoff is mostly negative? Just because you finished your passion project doesn’t mean anybody other than you will even appreciate it. Idk if that’s something I could handle, pouring years of my life into a project I love and finding that it was too weird or too boring for anybody to want to play.
