We’ve bought well equipped boats three times now. We always looked for a boat with a careful owner that had been appropriately upgraded. After seeing many such situations plus talking with people on our travels, we feel the charter boats and even the badly damaged boats in need of major work are never bargains. Our current boat is a Jeanneau 45DS that came with new electronics, new sails, new water maker etc. if you’ve ever watched Expedition Evans, they bought a wrecked Beneteau 49 and spent a year bringing it back. Even after that, they had original sails and basic equipment. We saw the boat last year in Ft Lauderdale and she looked tired and worn out. But, they spent more than us in total after the years long project. My advice is to take your time and find a well cared for and upgraded boat.

I think we agree on that now! Charter boats seem like bargains but in the end we probably could have bought one already outfitted. Thank you for taking the time to comment!

Purchased 2 charters from them. Everyone just needs to realize you are buying the hull and plan on replacing everything. This is one of the reasons you’re buying at that price. But in the end you get to put what you want on it and at the same time learn everything about the boat when you’re replacing items. Side note there is a big difference in rigging the boat for island and offshore sailing. My advise is download the newport to bermuda race requirements and you will be amazed and learn so much about what your need for offshore passage

Very interesting and informative. I have been chartering with Sunsail and Moorings in the BVI every year for the past 10 years. In doing so, I have seen how they maintain the boats to get them ready for the next charter. You are spot on. They get them so that they are good enough for the next charter. Seeing how hard people are on the boats, I wouldn't want to purchase one. You do get a good deal, but with the cost of new parts and repairs, is it worth it? Meeeah. Who knows. Shannon, you all are doing a great job and getting things done. I see that you are now in Southern Florida and have started your journey. As you settle into your new routines then they change ( at least that is how it is with me). But I have some things I try to have as non- negotiable, but saying that I may not always get them done on that day or a specific time. It is sort of a general list. By the end of the week if I have accomplished most of these, I feel pretty good. You know what you need to do to make you feel like you had a successful week. Thanks for the videos.

Very Informative video, thanks so much. I had the experience of closing on a Moorings monohull in BVI last spring and long story short, bailed out because of all troubles encountered. Moorings did return my earnest money so no problem there but spent a bit on travels, survey that isn't recouped. I am still looking for a boat but am afraid to delve into the Moorings Brokerage again.
@SailingParadiseFalls Жыл бұрын
I think if you are up for challenges and possess good project management skills you can get through. We were just not aware of all the hassle and hoops we would have to endure. A 2nd full survey the week of closing is essential to make sure everything that you surveyed previously is still intact, Depends on the price of the boat if we would do it again. We definitely could not have purchased a private L45 for what we got our for. Thank you for your comment and best of luck I. Your boat shopping!
@michaelmarrone5768 Жыл бұрын
@@SailingParadiseFalls Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the survey revealed moisture in the deck core along with delamination in the hull. It was more than I wanted to get into and the Moorings wouldn't negotiate enough from my point of view. It was surprising because it wasn't an old boat by any means. I get what you mean about making sure everything is intact, after going around the dry dock on Virgin Gorda I was surprised at how much they scavanged the boats for pieces and parts. My experience made me concerned to try and work with the Moorings again. The distance to the boat is a real factor too as you mentioned. Cost me a lot in travel expenses to get down there to view the boat and be present for survey.

Thank you for posting this video and documenting your experience! I really appreciate how you associated your pros and cons with why they mattered to you. We just took delivery of a new FP 45 this Spring. It's been an adventure for sure. Even though I think I've had exceptional service and support, A new boat is not a relaxing or turn-key experience either. You may be dealing with fall-out from questionable maintenance or architecting a battery bank. A new boat has all sorts of integration issues between the factory, post factory and dealer installed systems. Even in a location like Annapolis, parts can be difficult to get and waiting for skilled labor to become available are still obstacles. One thing that I think is a misconception. 4 cabin boats cost $9k more than 3 cabin owners versions. By the time you add $ for the extra head etc. We did all of our own Chandlery and that adds up. I'm starting to wonder if the best boat to buy is a 3 year-old privately owned 4 cabin boat. Shaken out but not worn out. Still has a warranty on the Hull. Maybe no one sells theirs at 3 years. Cheers

Awesome, honest opinion video. Thanks for sharing ! Look forward to watching your progress. The insurance cost I think is a big determining factor for many of us. Plus, "many" say you need 10% of the boat value YEARLY for upkeep/maint. I'm not sure one needs say, $50,000 per year for a 40-45' catamaran.
@SailingParadiseFalls Жыл бұрын
Yes, we agree on that. If I’m sinking $100,000 upfront for a refit we certainly do not plan to sink $60,000 in yearly. Upkeep costs are budgeted but nowhere near that. I wonder how much of these problems were because the boat was a Leopard. They haven't gotten very good reviews lately.
@SailingParadiseFalls Жыл бұрын
Leopard still makes a great boat especially compared to the other production builders. Every boat is gonna have issues but a lot of our repairs were due to lack of proper routine maintenance by the Moorings. We are still fans of the Leopard product. Thanks for your comment!

Change those alloy cleats to the new stainless steel ones they use. If you have to use one in a storm or emergency they are dangerous imo, I've seen the tips break off. They phased them out and changed to Roca cleats.

Hi - great question. Boat is registered in Florida. We paid FL tax and import fees to the US government since we knew she was going to be staying in Florida before and after our circumnavigation.

Wow, I would think that having a boat would be easy to enjoy these lakes or oceans just to travel or simply hang out or relax. I’ve never owned a boat but my brother and friends of ours never had conversations regar severe extra fees and taxes. So living on this earth………. Where is the freedom of not having to pay additional fees…… for just relaxing and enjoying sea life? Everything has its pros and cons but…….. 🙏🏻💪🏻🙏🏻👍🏻🙏🏻 P.S. Who in this world owns the ocean or lakes? 😎😎😎

Would you consider purchasing a new boat from Moorings and getting the guaranteed income and 12 weeks of charter use for 4-5 years instead of buying used?
@SailingParadiseFalls Жыл бұрын
I don’t think so. We ran that by our financial planner 5yrs ago and where we had our money was a better option for us. In the end, whether you buy it new and put it into charter, you still get a 5yr old charter boat that’s been minimally maintained. If we did it again, I think we would search harder or wait longer for a privately owned vessel. Thanks for your comment!

$15k for insurance with a limited georgraphic zone. Can you give a general idea of the purchase price of the boat? Also, do you know if there is an advantage to buying the boat outside of the U.S.?
@SailingParadiseFalls9 ай бұрын
Over 500k. Insurance is getting very narrow and pricey. We wanted to keep the boat in FL for hurricane Season so that was factored into our policy and our rate. We'll actually have an update on that in a coming episode.
@superformOG Жыл бұрын
so if you had for instance an ICC would that cover you for the insurance? I would think your money would be better spent getting a skippers license rather then just hiring a skipper
@SailingParadiseFalls Жыл бұрын
Actually, the insurance carrier would not insure just any captain on our boat. The captain had to submit his resume to the company with approximately how many hours that he captained a similar type and sized vessel and all of his credentials. They had to review his experience prior to adding him to our policy. What companies want to see is that you have someone that KNOWS the boat you are buying and how it operates. If we had gone on multiple charters where we bareboated a 45 foot catamaran and had documented hours of sailing it, we would not have needed to get signed off. We have owned multiple sailboats prior to this one, just not one as large. So they wanted proof from a skipper that we could handle the boat and not destroy it and other property (boats, docks, bridges, etc) because it was beyond our capability. Good thing we passed with flying colors and we have been able to dock multiple places and not hit anything!
@trentspencer7991 Жыл бұрын
I have to say this because I keep hearing this myth about insurance and want to leave a clue. The getting signed off by a captain thing is fiction and can be avoided but I'm referring to a boat that is solely for private use. Getting many offers of insurance at a good price is mostly about providing the right answers in the initial interviews and having the right attitude. I love the honesty in the video though.

I think your videos are very good. The only thing is the sound, it goes into a pitch or something, that the sound gets screeeeeechy in my ears. Otherwise, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to live on YT. Very good job! I mean, I unsubscribe to channels that dont care about the sound (even though we all are commenting on it) bc the experience is annoying. There are little mics you can purchese, or invest in some dead cats-fluff. And dont scream. The best voices are those that rumble a bit, like Alan Rickman. Soft, crisp and low. I used to work at our national number information and I learned a trick or two there. Low voices get a lot more positive feedback. Good luck, people! Your kids are adorable, you are positive, so just DO IT and have fun! /Catta from Sweden

Thanks so much! Our “good” mic took a swim right before filming. Yes, we should have backup but we didn’t. I got another mic for the Nikon camera and using a yeti x for voiceovers. Since this video I learned about the normalization button. I’m working g hard to get the sound right but it’s been a steep learning curve. Thanks for hanging in there!

@@SailingParadiseFalls - Oh, tell me about it! I had to watch some YT-tutorials before I even could grasp the concept of sound managing. And since I am sensitive (tinnitus) it really should be perfect from me. It's not yet, but Im getting there! Have a nice weekend! /Catta

L45 is definitely a boat I am considering along with the L44. You said you absolutely wanted the 45 over the 44. Is that due to size (actual difference is about 2 feet), age or something else?
@SailingParadiseFalls Жыл бұрын
We both preferred the layout of the 45 much better. The 45 seems much more spacious for the saloon. We also preferred the forward facing dining table to sit at during night watched. You really need to jump on both and see which you prefer. We had always thought we would get a L44 but I am very glad we waited and got the 45. Thanks for watching and your comment!

So you sold your house that is going up in value to buy a boat that is going down in value? Makes perfect sense to me ;-)
@SailingParadiseFalls25 күн бұрын
Actually, we sold at the very height of the market. Last I looked at the Zillow value, it was less than what we sold for. Yes the boat is a depreciating asset, but these adventures will outlast the house in our memories.

Hi there can you tell us what the boat cost from the Moorings please?
@SailingParadiseFalls Жыл бұрын
$600,000 - when we first started planning, a L44 was $340,000 and L48 was $450,000. More than I would have preferred. That cost with the experience and issues is most of my frustration w the Moorings. Had we paid $50,000 - $100,000 less maybe my mind would change.
