Only point I disagree on is forcing yourself to use a Japanese dictionary early. When you feel ready to use a Japanese dictionary you should switch. Eventually you get to a point where the Japanese definition is more clear and useful.

I think if you switch too early it’ll be obvious but it’s worth trying so see

ok, so im trying to do RTK after ur video and maybe i will switch wanikani with that deck
@ryacw

That’s a very good schedule but I’d suggest not using wanikani because it’s slow and you can use your money on better resources. I made a kanji video a few days ago, there’s a really good free anki deck in the description of that video that I recommend instead! Good luck

For Anki, at the bottom of this guide from refold is a really good setup for Anki refold.la/es/roadmap/stage-1/a/anki-setup/ Enjoy

Alright. Bout a year or so ago the refold 2k deck defeated me and so entire deck is due today and everyday minus leeches (which also scared me) I've thought of starting over, but seeing this source I think today is the day

When you do AJATT, do you watch with Japanese and English subtitles together, Japanese only and look up stuff you don't know, or just passively listen? I think I'm gonna start AJATT soon, I know a decent amount of vocab, immersion is something I've been putting off for a while now.

Nah don’t combine English with Japanese subs, part of ajatt is tolerating ambiguity but I do look up words I don’t know if I see it a few times. If you do RTK you’ll be able to guess a lot of kanji words based on context and the kanjis themselves. If you’re a beginner then don’t worry too much about stuff like monolingual transition, the most important part is just starting ajatt and getting used to passive listening, etc

I would say just TL with TL subs, that's how I started out, I would recommend to do 90% free flow immersion (I think you know what that means) and 10% doing intense immersion, basically looking up every word, something you can also do is watch a video with intensive immersion and then rewatch and do free flow, that's how I started out, it bit for like a month but it paid off, I also sentence mined from the start, granted, because I didn't understand the sentences I would basically just use it like a on-going puzzle, because the more words I knew, the more words I would recognize in my flashcards, granted I know I was a bit extreme in this, but I would say just TL with TL subs, sentence mining (even if you only care about the one word), and remember, 5 minutes of immersion, is miles better than non, Wish you luck man 🍀

Your channel has been very helpful. I wondering when you started sentence mining because I've seen people say after 1k words, 2k, 4k. In your opinion when do you think people should start sentence mining.
@ryacw

It depends on what deck you used to start, I used a 1k word deck but when you’re done, start mining immediately because there’s really no point in waiting.

I sentenced mined at the very start, just because I didn't and still now don't see a reason as to not, and plus you're going to get the best vocab you can get via doing this, cause you won't have to remember "Dog" when you know you're not going to see that in immersion, not to say learning abstract words like "dog" is unproductive, just saying that I think there is no actual barrier to sentence mining right out the gate, and starting sentence mining out the gate was really helpful for my AJATT when I was beginning.
Are you learning kanji WRONG? (I messed up)
