I've spent weeks trying to make a professional looking main menu. I thought it would take a day or so. I have decades of windows development, and I consider myself an expert enterprise developer. But sometimes unity development feels like I'm trying to drive a car with only my feet.

TIP: Once you overcome those nightmare dev days, make an effort to document the solution for future reference because its human tendency to black out or forget traumatic experiences and you may have to repeat that trauma at a later stage unless you make a note about what to do.

The reason youtube is full of tutorials is because that is what people search for. They don't want answers on how to finish a project. They want to learn to code something. The problem is that to be successful in game development, you need so much more than just code. And you need to learn from someone who has done it.

So there isn’t like a single book in existence that goes over any of godot’s concepts? There atleast has to be one like what.
@endgamedevsАй бұрын
@breadsticks992 so why do you want a book on godot? I'm trying to understand your comment. Are you needing help doing stuff in godot? Whats the reason you decided to use godot if there is no book with your needs? Curious
@breadsticks992Ай бұрын
@@endgamedevs Well I want to make a game on it, so tried to learn it and got pretty successful around the ui and stuff, but the coding is the hardest part. I can’t really figure out how to multiply my variable which is my clicks amount.

Nearly 3 years of development has def taken its toll. There have been improvements, sometimes large, sometimes tiny. Trying to keep moving forward is so much easier said than done. That comment about feeling like a beginner really hits home. I have created some really cool mechanics for my game (Vids under channel) but boy oh boy do I feel more and more like a noob every time I need to switch gears from art, to programming, to sound design, to environment design. For anyone who wants to get into game dev ask yourself this question, do you hate your mental health? If yes, CONGRATS! You're ready to be a game dev. My biggest fear as a dev was creating a system or mechanic early on only to discover later as I learned more that I created a limited, overly complicated approach that had a much easier more elegant solution. I have realized that fear at least 2 different times and it hurt. But forcing myself to push through helped. Just keep going.

I made like .. 40+ games in my first 4 years next to my day to day job and then it struck me: I am writing shtty code, my animations are not perfect, my audio stingers etc are not set correct, I do not use the right tools ... things I just tell my self! I just made games before that, and I speedrun the GamedevProgress very hard with alot of fun! I made great games, which I could not recreate now and because I think I did so many things wrong! I am still struggling, but I try to get back into my shape and make nice games in the future.

Just wanted to say thanks for putting this out there. I literally am in the middle of nightmare days with dictionaries and inventory systems with Godot. I’ve literally thought all the same things, am I too dumb to figure this out? Is this going to be the thing that ends my dream. This video has given me some motivation to hang in there and persist. I’m still in the thick of the woods, but with my last push it’s clear I’m starting to see a bit of light. Thanks again and all the best with your game dev journey.

Another tip is to not compare yourself with professionals that have been in the field for many years. When I first started I would do just that and it was demoralizing.
@flamart9703Ай бұрын
Yeah, at fist it may be demoralizing, but considering my experience I'll give the opposite advice for those who want to improve - compare yourself even with professionals, this will help you improve if you are diligent.

Currently stuck trying to figure out bone animation. I’m at the point mentally where I just stopped believing I can create good looking character animations and there’s no amount of tutorials that will help. I could always go back to spritesheets, but I also know I want to have different characters/skins in my game, and there’s no way I can accomplish that with spritesheets.

The channel Git-Amend can help you as a coder go from Intermediate to Advanced, definitely not as a beginner. Always practice or use what you learn. And I fell into the trap of thinking a tutorial was a full game. The best thing I've learned, create modularity. You dont need to recreate the wheel every project or prototype. Create systems and mechanics in a way that should you ever add on or mutate them, it doesn't break your whole project.

I think you missunderstand the Dunning-Kruger effect. What it does is make you belive you are really good at something when you basically know nothing.
@CopperheadGameStudiosАй бұрын
This is certainly a big part of it, but there are 2 axes, and the inverse is true as well, as he was alluding to. At first, as you said, you know very little but you have this influx of knowledge about a topic where there was none before so you feel more confident in what you know despite barely scratching the surface. As you progress, your knowledge builds but not at the same perceived rate as it did at first so you start to question how much you really know, and your confidence level suffers until you start slowly building it back up by continuing to gain knowledge and consistently proving to yourself that you know what's what.
