Hey everyone, it's me, the "bad" Halo player featured in this video! Good news: I've enlisted a few coaches and will be competing in HRL soon. My game has improved faster than a Spartan sprinting with Active Camo, thanks to Shyway's and many others sage advice. Yes, I was that terrible, but hey, progress is progress, right? Decided to dive back into the Halo universe 45 days ago when my son started talking about going pro one day. Thought it would be a blast to dust off the old controller, show him that even us old-timers can level up with some hard work. Spoiler alert: we're having an epic time! I started at Silver 2 and now I'm climbing to Gold 5/6. Who says you can't teach an old Spartan new tricks?

@@_Mutt_ Oh, it's definitely not a "C'mon, dad" situation! My son actually thinks I'm cool because I know some of the pros and, of course, Shyway. We have weekly game nights where it's just the two of us-late-night ranked matches followed by a movie on the projector. It's been an awesome way to bond. We're both pretty competitive, so there's a fair share of smack talk and some heart-to-heart lessons along the way. 😄👨‍👦

One thing that help me is memorizing maps...use every opening,corner,high ground edges you can climb that enemies would expect someone in that place and make that your advantage.

I was looking to get back into halo seeing all the big changes that happened with BTB and forge but for some reason I can't even load into the game without it immediately stopping the game load and stops the game with no alert notification nothing telling me why it failed to load (I play on PC purchased through steam), I was looking into fix through Google but could not find anything to help me resolve the issue but I came across you weeks ago when installing and have learned a lot about position and team positioning I quite enjoy the content and plan to keep following even though I am unable to play... I hope everyone keeps in mind modern skill-based matchmaking systems (like the one Infinite's social AND ranked playlists) are designed to keep you around a 50% win/loss rate regardless of skill. When it's your "turn" to lose, the game stacks the lobby against you- juuuustt enough that the game can almost guarantee you will lose if you're giving it your best. It does this to keep the worst players winning half their games and also because there have been studies done that show giving players this sense of urgency can keep them playing another game. It's manipulative as hell actually, because most players assume SBMM is giving them fair games, when in reality it isn't always. Basically, don't let it get in your head and stay healthy.

I wish my win rate was 50%, played over 3000 ranked matches for 46% Lots of days win one lose 7 or 8. Looked back at halo tracker and only had 2 days where I won more than I lost since April lol. Stupid matchmaking

For some n00b gameplay, my tag is "allienord". Had never touched Halo (or any FPS) until May, did the campaigns, and jumped into multiplayer. Currently Bronze 6 but I feel like I'm making small incremental improvements thanks to these videos. One major change I made is unbinding the melee button, I was panic meleeing way too much when I could have ducked out, now I try to be more intentional about keeping distance (or dying to melee when the enemy gets in close 😹)

Something that will definitely make this person play better: Play on a gaming monitor. Watching this person play i can tell they are playing on a regular TV. The input latency is very noticeable.

He actually does! But he plays on an ultrawide monitor - which I think is definitely a problem - pulls a lot of PC resources, lowering framerate for visuals and hurts his peripheral awareness - especially for the teammate icons.

You are correct! I was on a ultrawide running 60hz until last week. I just picked up a 25in curved 240hz monitor so this should help a lot. I haven't been able to play on it much at all yet but plan to in the coming weeks.

Halo has a very big learning curve. It's all about executing with the weapons you got and need to get BY STAYING ALIVE. Noob players will trade with a melee when they dont have to. Jump backwards and shoot them in the face. Playing Fiesta will help any new player out to learn all the weapons. Everything else is just practice

I stopped trying to be that good once i found out about the ai stuff. Like did i really lose? Or did the ai just decide that i would lose this match. Did i really win? Or did the ai just give me a victory. It takes all the actual fun out of it.

AI? The game has a built in skill based matchmaking system that attempts to keep you around a 50% win ratio, yes. It will give you games it expects you to win and games it expects you to lose. If you WIN in the games you're expected to lose - or if you DOMINATE in the games you're expected to win, then that means you're improving and you'll level up. If not, then you'll stay around where you were. If you deserve to be an onyx, you'll be an onyx. As punishing as the system can be/feel at times, for the most part its fair, and people end up at the ranks they should.

@Shyway I was in platinum for a while and fought my way up to Dimond two? I think. But game after game, I ended up at the top of the leader board in what seemed like impossible matches, win a match, lose a match. None of them were close. It was either a landslide one way or another. Then I learn about the AI stuff and kinda floated back to Plat. Winning or losing just didn't mean as much anymore.

@Shyway maybe ai isn't the right way to describe it. Either way, if the game uses a system, it predicts if you're gonna win or lose, then puts you in because it decided it's tour turn to do ether or then that's a problem for me. It's skill based, yes, but if it looks at you, then knows your skill level and deliberately puts you in a match in which you will be at a disadvantage, then it's doing it wrong. It isn't fair to you because you stand a little actual chance of winning. To your teammates because they just get pooped on, or the other team because they don't get an actual challenge. Don't get me wrong I love halo, and infintes game play, but the way that matchmaking is operated actively works against it .

Your first problem is exactly your console. Upgrade to Series X asap and you will see INSANE difference. You don't need a 240 fps pc setup though obviously that would be even better, but 30 vs 120 fps is honestly insane difference.

Yep! I que with a Plat 3 often and My HRL team is two Diamonds and a Plat1 so I often get pulled into lobbies WAY above my head but it helps me get better. I clean up in gold solo queing lately. Im just enjoying the grind. I will play any rank, anytime I am asked. I just love the game.

Dude more likely than not he’s awkward on the controller not “fancy strafing” on that terrible play at A. Guessing he’s indecisive off spawn because there’s a million maps in this game to learn and nuance takes time. Even the strats per game type are different per map.

Game has problems and it’s still better than any other FPS. I tried to get into others but they’re just not nearly as good. And all the battle royales and hero shooters are just lame. There’s just nothing like Halo. Other games are “games”….Halos the only one that actually plays like a “sport” without the game getting in the way.
