Many people opt for the Delonghi Dedica or ECP line when choosing their first espresso machine, not yet knowing the rabbit hole they are getting into. In this video, we go over the most common questions I get regarding Delonghi Espresso Machines, and talk about accessories that can heighten the quality of your espresso game with these affordable machines. Finally, we do a couple of demos. First, we look at how to dose based on the basket, we compare single and double baskets, and we also compare cheap generic vs quality IMS baskets. Finally, we go over some tips for mastering your milk steaming.

Tom has been a Dedica godsend for me. I'm in the process of modifying mine to use the "Gaggiunio" modification. Everything is pretty much straighforward except for the pressure release valve, which the Dedica doesn't have. If you decide you want to "hack" your Dedica to a whole new level of control (pressure, temperature and profiling), check out the "Gaggiuino" project.

@@jasonng5194 I'm just going in blind. The first thing I did was build the version for an actual Gaggia Classic. I followed Tom's lead on where to install the pressure sensor. I had originally placed the thermocouple next to the pressure sender, but it wasn't very accurate. I found a nice spot on the boiler. The whole thing can be placed where the stock circuit board fits. Tom..if me providing these links rubs you the wrong way, let me know. Just bought this model from a used marketplace that was barely used and looks mint. Made my first double with milk frothed. I had problems due to the Almost Lactose free milk (while it worked, it became too foamy), seems it would lack certain proteins to make the proper consistency of milk at the right temperature. I'll invest in those upgrade items this week. Paid $140.00 cdn for the unit, I'm already in love with it.

Excellent review! The ability to exchange stock components for quality aftermarket ones is something that is on my checklist of potential espresso machines. It seems like espresso machines within a certain price point may have a greater threshold for variance in quality control. When you were discussing the cheaper basket and then using it, I noticed at 11:09 that the compressed coffee puck had pulled away from the side of the basket in the lower right hand corner (by your thumb), and then the subsequent channeling when it came under pressure, which makes me wonder if the basket wasn't perfectly round to begin with, or more likely that "2" stamped into the side had enough of an indent, to push against the side of the tamper. Either way, replacing the stock basket seems like a requirement because this would drive me crazy.

Hi Tom, I will shortly be returning to where my Dedica is and I have bought a beautiful new bottomless portafilter, a Matow palm distributor, and a nice heavyweight tamper for it. I am also bringing along my set of scales. All of these were bought after watching your informative videos! I am hoping to get an amazing coffee from the Dedica but will probably have to source some good beans and a grinder! I will report back if the old Delonghi non pressurized baskets that I had with my old machine will fit in the new portafilter. Btw , now having used the Sage/ Breville Bambino Plus and the cheaper Bambino machines which I have set up in similar ways, I would tell anybody looking to buy between these two machines that the extra money for the Plus is definitely worth it even if you don't care about the auto frothing ( I never use it) . Everything about the Plus is better quality than the stripped down Bambino which I would not buy again if I had to it over. Just my opinion.....

A quick update- the old non pressurized baskets did not work in the Dedica but the new bottomless portafilter had one included. I have being using the automatic steamer on the Plus occasionally and it can be a fun time saver- works surprisingly well!

Awesome video :) I think the best think about the pressure of these machines that people can use as a learning tool is if you're shot is choking or running super slow, you are more than likely above 9 bar and it will continue to just squish your puck until it finds a channel. For me, yucky or slow shots got better with a coarser grind size. This will limit your extraction amounts because you could potentially grind finer if you could control the pressure going beyond 9 bar and have nicer shots, but for

Very informative, learned a fair bit so thanks for that. My question is the following. Are there options out there that will let you brew in 200+ ml cups (like Nespresso Vertuo 230ml) using your own ground coffee? I'm currently using a Vertuo pop but reusing the capsules and filling it with my own fresh grounded coffee blend. When it works it tastes great but the machine is a hassle to work with this way and has lately been causing a lot of problems. I guess the result I'm looking for is like a big big lungo. I'm not after "Americano". I hope you or someone else can give me some pointers, thanks in advance :)

Hi Tom, bought this machine week ago, I'm trying to learn about world of coffee. The problem is that shots are quick and with no crema. I'm using bottomless (generic basket) portafilter and coffee is grinded in the finest grade of a mellita grinder. You’ll have a much more pleasant time if you source some freshly roasted coffee. Means you don’t need to grind so fine. Supermarket coffee will almost never tell you when it was roasted. Aim between 8-10 days after roasting, and then to use it before 4-6 weeks after roast date

Thanks for the review and definitely those accessories. Recently I got the ec.885 model with new steam wand. I have changed a 3rd party PF but couldn’t get the kind of crema as expected even using different coffee beans. Would you consider the water pressure not arriving 9 bar?

Just upgraded my steam wand from your amazing video on doing so. Curious if you could use this bottomless portafilter with the double basket for single shots. Or do I require a different portafilter and basket for singles? Thank you very much for your informative videos 🙏

You'll need a single basket for single shots, at least that's what I find, because there's too much head room above the puck if you underdose in a double basket, and the shot runs too quickly. Cheers!

Hey Tom GREAT videos sure appreciate the info you provide. I am ready to make a purchase as a newbie to home espresso making. I have watched your video comparing the GCP to the Dedica. I am really torn I like the esthetics of both, I’m a tinkerer so doing the mods is intriguing. But I’m kind of leaning toward the Dedica with the accessories you mention in this video to learn on. Then later on up my game to a machine with PID, pressure gauge etc. logical? Or is just going direct to the GCP better, be patient, persistent, learn and keep this machine much longer with mod’s aplenty. Thanks
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
I think the Dedica is the perfect machine to learn on. For me, it's more forgiving than the GCP, and in Europe anyway, it's so cheap to buy. But certainly later if you are curious, the GCP is a great machine to mod. Which market are you in, anyway?

Hey Tom, your videos are helping me get the most out of my Dedica machine. Thank you! One question I have been struggling to find an answer to is whether or not you can get a good shot from the Dedica using Illy espresso ground coffee? (I appreciate you can get better coffee with freshly ground coffee). I see a few people complaining that the Illy espresso grind is super fine but would love to hear your experience
@TomsCoffeeCorner

Probably not, because that pre-ground is usually MONTHS old, and therefore has lost its freshness even before opening the bag.

Hi Tom! Nice videos, keep them coming! 🙌 I have a problem with the flow as it is too quick. I've got the IMS screen and the IMS 12-14g basket with bottomless portafilter on the 685. Cannot grind fine enough with the Sage BCG600BTR - the burr is set to 2 (as i remember) and the adjustment ring to the point where the grinder starts to struggle. I've tried another non ims basket with a larger 18g dose and still too quick - it comes down in two-three streams almost in the center . I'm using dark roast supermarket beans (tried a light roast with the IMS as well and a puck screen with no luck). Does that mean I need fresh specialty coffee to get good results or maybe I need to ditch the grinder or machine and get a better one? 😵

Hi Tom Thanks for sharing all this knowledge with us ! It’s very helpful 😊 I have one question about tamping. There is some espresso machine like the breville that gives a laser tool to adjust the perfect tamp height. Do you know if there is a similar method with the dedica ? Like the height between the puck and the top of the basket for a double basket ?
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
Well, you do need some "head space" above the coffee puck, below the shower screen. For me, the depth of the tamper is a good guide. The laser tool I think is kind of gimmicky, but it's free, so I am not going to knock it, but I don't think it really does anything.
@h.b.4011

Thanks for the reply. So could you recommend an average height for the “head space” ? I just bought an adjustable tamper to stabilize this parameter and I’m wondering how to set it properly

10:29 did you stop the machine yourself? Or does it stopped by itself? what is difference between first & second button of machine? And why did you pressed the second one if you wanted to stop it at the same time of the first button? (becuase I think second button is *2 times of first button and *2 volume)

great! whatever the profile of the coffee, is it always preferable to use the temperature hack before taking the shot? Should an unpressurized filter used in a non-naked portafilter be avoided?
@TomsCoffeeCorner

General rule is, lighter roasted coffee needs more heat. You don't always have to use the hack, but you can. It's nice to experiment.

Hi Tom, Thanks again for a very nice and useful video! I am wondering about the different bottomless portafilters you suggest. Following the links you give, I see three brands: Normcore, Joytata and Fenteer. Would you say that one is better than the others? And what about the tamper: is there a brand that you would recommend? I long to see your advice...! Robin

No, the Ariete looks like the standard chinese model, like the Gevi 20 bar, Silvercrest SSMS, or Koenic. I think those all come from the same off the shelf chinese supplier. Not the same as Delonghi.

Oops, didn't get everything on there! Here you mention the shower screen. Are you saying that the shower screen that comes with the Dedica I just bought isn't as good as replacing?, or snapping on a new shower screen (the two examples you recommend)? Why are the 2 new screens you are recommending better and how would they be replaced? I am enjoying the great quality coffee extractions I'm getting with the Dedica and am really excited about making other Italian coffee recipes. Thanx!
