Just a quick update from me. After watching your videos, I upgraded and invested in the Normcore bottomless portafilter, and the IMS 16-18 basket. Once I’d done this, it revealed my existing grinder was rubbish so I went for the Baratza ESP. Wow is all I can say. Just bought this model from a used marketplace that was barely used and looks mint. Made my first double with milk frothed. I had problems due to the Almost Lactose free milk (while it worked, it became too foamy), seems it would lack certain proteins to make the proper consistency of milk at the right temperature. I'll invest in those upgrade items this week. Paid $140.00 cdn for the unit, I'm already in love with it.

I found these videos very helpful. I have a 685 and have recently bought the Normcore bottomless and the IMS H26 basket. I’m really struggling with extraction though. Hardly any crema - just a ring around the outside, some spraying, and for around 16g of coffee / 35g total liquid, in extracting in just 22 seconds. My Bodum burr grinder is on the finest setting too. Definitely using good beans and to be honest the pressurised baskets have always given me good results and great crema. Hi Tom, I will shortly be returning to where my Dedica is and I have bought a beautiful new bottomless portafilter, a Matow palm distributor, and a nice heavyweight tamper for it. I am also bringing along my set of scales. All of these were bought after watching your informative videos! I am hoping to get an amazing coffee from the Dedica but will probably have to source some good beans and a grinder! I will report back if the old Delonghi non pressurized baskets that I had with my old machine will fit in the new portafilter. Btw , now having used the Sage/ Breville Bambino Plus and the cheaper Bambino machines which I have set up in similar ways, I would tell anybody looking to buy between these two machines that the extra money for the Plus is definitely worth it even if you don't care about the auto frothing ( I never use it) . Everything about the Plus is better quality than the stripped down Bambino which I would not buy again if I had to it over. Just my opinion.....

I tried this and the results were really disappointing. I got an espresso that was much weaker than before and without a hint of crema. This is compared to using the standard pressurised basket. Can you suggest what I may be doing wrong.

I have the same problem! unfortunately in my country, Iran, coffee beans are imported and packaged in bulk and unprofessionally. Even the most DeLonghi sellers themselves do not know what coffee to use for the 685 espresso machine to give a good crema. They test the extract with a china cup so that no one notices its very low crema. The truth is that DeLonghi does not give good crema with every coffee bean. You have to search a lot in the coffee market and do trial and error to get the right combination🙏

One question I have been struggling to find an answer to is whether or not you can get a good shot from the Dedica using Illy espresso ground coffee? Would it work to remove the plastic of the Dedica porta-filter and put an IMS filter in the original Dedica porta-filter ? Or is there no other way than changing the porta-filter ? b. With a new porta-filter and a new filter, how do you serve 2 expressos at the same time ? Many thanks again

Hi Tom, I really like your videos. I got myself a Dedica 855 and I love it so far. I'm actually getting pretty confident with it. But some questions are still unanswered and I couldn't find the answers on the Internet. So ... 1. When do you start the timer? With pushing the button including the pre-injection or after the pre-injection? I usually count round about 26 seconds after the pre-injection. 2. What is the right ratio for a single shot? I found that simply dividing the ratio of a double doesn't work. How much coffee in and how much out in which time? The coffee with a single basket doesn't run that smoothly than a double basket. It usually even runs faster. So with 9g in and a extraction time of 12sec I end up with round about 30g out. I think thats it so far :) Thanks for your answer and the nice videos!
@magig5883

My one-cup method: 10g in, 20-25g yield. 25-35 seconds with pre-infusion. For one shot, you need to grind it finer.

Agreed, I have to grind a good amount finer for a single shot.

I start timing at the button press, because that is when the puck starts absorbing the water. As for single shots, they are hard to do. You have to grind a lot finer, and even then they will run faster than ab double, relatively speaking.

@@TomsCoffeeCorner the truth is we rarely see single shots, 7 to 10 grs, in internet (instagram, shorts, youtube, etc), we only see 16 to 20 grs shots. Now, I drink in my house the same 2 expressos, but with 15 + 15 grs! I doubled the caffeine per day. Only because I followed the mood in the net and it is really more dificult to make single shots! Your videos are great, so glad I found them. But I need help.... I thought I was making progress with my Delongi EC680 and aftermarket 2 shot bottomless portafilter basket using grind setting 5 on my 2 year old Baratza Encore grinder. Then the grinder broke. Baratza replaced it with same, and now 15 grams coffee at 3 grind, 20 lb pressure, gives me 70-80 grams espresso in 30 seconds, with almost no crema and very sour.
