I feel like some people just say really dumb things… it’s not that hard to understand why you do what you do. I can’t get over how I’ve been training my dog for month and they had such bad leash reactivity, she hated my neighbours dog, and now we go on walks together she doesn’t react badly to dogs anymore, she listens more. I’ve only been doing this for three days. People underestimate how strong dogs are and how that really doesn’t hurt them

Hi what do you do if the walk is good untill they see a dog. So if the dog leaves me do I stop the walk, but then even if the dog goes nut I have to wait untill it's calmed down or do I correct the pull but carry on walking

Brilliant method! Teaching the dog how to self-regulate PRO-ACTIVELY! Most other methods either use too much force (WAY too late ... when they're already adrenalized & thus beyond reason!), or just train the dog's body to do detailed behaviours without training the thinking mind... it's like they can physically be in perfect heel position with their head up, but their minds are not With You! Instead, they're tuned out, planning their next solo adventure (without you)! I practice this menthod every time i leave my house w my 65lb pup. Today the leash spontaneously disconnected, like just fell off my dog while loose leash walking! He took off around the corner but came right back! I was in disbelief. I shouted "Brody, come!" I knew I would never catch him. He came right back to me. I love Joel's methods, but damn was I glad to have a big fist full of treats to reward a perfect come. My neighbor came outside with her dog at that exact moment and I still can't believe my dog came straight back to me instead of running up on the neighbors dog. I have a 4 month old standard labradoodle, so being quite big already, I forget she is still very much a puppy. She has been very quick to learn the basics like sit, lay down and paw (she will give you both paws crossed over "like a lady" as we say 😂) but while relatively decent on walks, she is extremely reactive so i will definitely be "starting from scratch" and beginning the steps inside before going back to walks at the park. He walks all over the place when we go on walks, he doesn’t know any commands, and he’s tested our other Dane twice already. But your videos has helped us get progress within 3 days! I would love to hear more education and see more training of chihuahuas. I personally dont own one, i have a field trial labrador, but i feel there should be more awareness as these dogs are always problematic, anxious, stressed out and aggressive due to their irresponsible and uneducated owners. Joel, I have gotten great results with your method. From what you are saying about comments, at first I thought the same thing, but when I then realized that the correction ONLY came from the dog's going beyond the boundary set by the leash. The leash simply must be obeyed. I didn't understand that at first either. I am almost completely silent when doing the corrections, the leash does the talking and conveys the perfect message to my GSD. I also started using a halti as you suggested but the leash kept ending up between his front legs. The solution I came up with was to tread the leash through a harness, under the D ring double fabric at the top. The only drawback is all corrections are to the left side, but it works. Had him 2 weeks now (3 year old) still very reactive depending on the distance.

Got a reactive to everything (except dogs) 1yr Australian Kelpiex- lab big boy and so different to our previous dog - calm dominant pit bull. Was even considering prong/e collars which I was really against up until quite recently. I have to teach him not to react to everything. But struggling with the pulling on walks & ppl coming to/nearby our house he’ll charge at them, growl, bark. At the dog park he pretty much ignores them as he goes into work mode chasing the ball chasers. He’s so calm and gentle with our kids but flips with everything else. Was close to giving up. Very informative, I use a prong collar with my puppy (5 months 54lbs) for walks but I'll try this. He is reactive with other dogs(not in a friendly way) and people (in a friendly way). He does check in with me on walks and stays by me but starts to get excited when he sees people and gets very distracted turning around looking at them and sometimes trying to lunge for attention. With other dogs he just puffs up (no barking or whining)and makes the leash tight but solely focuses on the dog and not me. I can definitely see the value of using a 6ft leash instead of shorter leashes from your method.

Tried this on my Jack Russell and is working far better than i expected. If you know Jack Russell’s it seems more than universally impossible, my advantage is that she’s 9 and slowing down in her years but this method 100% works with time and patience.

Best dog training videos out there man. Really helped me and my dog. My dog goes crazy in the car trying to attack doors and cars on the road through the windows. How would you go about correcting that? We've used peanut butter on the back hatch to create a positive association with that as he used to attack that when it closed. Now he loves when it comes down. But the barking at cars and jumping at windows is a problem. Not sure what method to use

I have a 4 year old border colly and he is so agressive to dogs that I almost lose a hope after 2 years of work with him.I watched and tried a lots of methods ,each one for months, and the problem is he react well on all them at first.But once he get used to it the methid doesent work anymore. What I understand is that you should also be training a near 100% recall with "come" and that way you'll be able to let your dog off leash once you hit a field. I'll loose leash walk my dog whenever I want to calm her down or there are fast moving cars around. When I get to the park or a safe place I let her off leash.

I am watching and learning…so much! My ten month old lab is doing great until we run across other dogs on the walk. A few, in particular, that are barking and lunging approach and ends my appeal. The other person stops to control their dog but my instinct is to walk away…pulling the 95 pound dog along. He is strong and powerful. A good puppy but it takes my full body weight to change his mind in these instances. Am I doing the right thing? We also have a 60 lb female lab that is 14months old. At this time we walk them separately but I will have to walk them, together, this fall. The two of them have out-strengthened me in the past and I worry about them being out of control on a walk and someone getting hurt.

I guess I just need to keep trying. I’ve been using your method to teach my now 11 month old Golden Labrador loose leash walking and she is great when it’s just her and I. This has been this way for months! Stopping all the time and she checks in and stops right with me. But the moment she sees another dog it’s like a switch on her brain goes off and she just loses her mind trying to go after then. (Not aggressively!) I don’t have a ton of dogs in the area so I’m wondering if I should be taking her outside dogs parks using the same technique to get her to chill out? What do you think?

Hello from South Africa! I've been watching your videos for about a year now. I love your realistic and honest approach to training. It's not that complicated. Consistency is so necessary. I have two GSDs of different ages. I've struggled for 4 years with our big boy and his pulling on the lead. No other methods worked. Using this method we went on our first walk today where I literally had his lead hanging over my finger and he was with me at every step. Our young girl, only 1 year old , does not pull, but she is very vocal and reactive when on the lead and I have been using this same technique and I'm already seeing improvement. I wish you weren't on the other side of the world as I could absolutely use more of your stellar advice for our little gsd girl. I recent adopted a 3year old lab who was never leash trained, did not even have a collar. First two days miserable with pulling Five minutes in the back yard and the technique worked!! Totally different dog. Loose leash with very few corrections for several weeks dven with distactions like other people and dogs around our neighborhood. BUT took HR to a more stimulating environment downdown...all out the door...corrections meant nothing She is very strong 60+ lbs with low center of gravity and I am a 56 year old 110 lb woman. I could not get any slack to correct and she just learned she's stronger than me. We are not going to take her to town until we figure this out. She is still really good around the neighborhood with occasional corrections on ever walk but now is extremely dangerous if she sees another dog. Almost took me down a few days ago. She could really hurt me or anyone walking her. It is weird she was calm around other dogs until after the downtown thing. What to do?

What sort of collar is best for this method? We currently use a martingale type and I am thinking his flat standard collar may work best with this method because the martingale has too much "play" for the correction to be instant. If a flat is best, then does it matter where on the neck it is worn and how snug should it be? Thanks!

I learned your method and I'm doing it with my two beagles. Before they were pulling me like crazy because they are nose driven breads. But this method is so after two training sections I can walk them both together at the same time on one side. Thank you so much. Also I still have one issue with one of my dogs. If I'm going around some fence with dog behind and he's barking then my dog doesn't "leave me" but he starts to bark too. What I should in these situations please. Should I correct him for bark or stay calm? Thanks

We have a 5 month old beagle with no fence so he is always on leash, either a lead and stake or I walk him around the yard with a long lead to be able to sniff. We use the short leash for walks and potty breaks. Is it reasonable for him to understand that the short leash means stay with me and the long lead is for being able to roam free. He has leash reactivity towards other dogs and I’m concerned that his constant leashing is only adding to his confusion and reactivity.

Can you do this with a truly leash reactive dog? It would be good to see a before and after. I have been taught this method as well and my dog is perfect out of the house and on walks with normal distractions, but most dogs is another story.

I’m currently working with a 5 and a half month old. The way I go about is still let her explore as she is still young but if she pulls I stop and say no pulling and she is learning when I stop she stops and every time she pulls the walk stops. I’ll say her pulling is so much better now. I will a be adding more corrections as she gets a little older.

🚨🚨Hi! I have a small 6lb yorkie who pulls and is very reactive on walks. I have no issue holding him back as he is a toy size. Because he is a toy size I was recommended to always use a harness. Do you have any tips with using a harness. It seems like it may be less effective than a buckle collar. He has no repercussion when the leash is popped. 🚨SOS 🚨please lol

I’d say so. Just start at home solid, go lighter on corrections and watch your environment (don’t jump into town centre right away). On the other hand such a young puppy don’t need ‘walking’ yet, it won’t understand the concept. Focus on other aspects of relationship building and training

I have two french bulldogs, one is 8 years old and the other one is 3 years old. I put them both on a loose leash. I was trying your suggestion with the older one and it seems working with him. It is just when he sees the other dogs I can't really stop him to lunge at the other dogs so I have to pick him up. On the other hand, the younger one is really stubborn, she will stop if I try to change her direction. I have to give her treats so she will move but still having a hard time with her. Can you give some suggestions on how to fix them for me? I would be really appreciated

There is already a video talking about what you can do with puppies according to their age. If I remember correctly puppies don't understand punishment very well. Look it up in the channel.

Would love a video about helping with dog anxiety when seeing other dogs. Your loose leash walking method has been great, but now instead of pulling and whining towards another dog she stays next to me and is still whining incessantly when we’re near another dog. I can interrupt her with a sit or watch me followed with a treat but not sure if I’m handling this correctly.

I'm no Beckman, but here's my two cents: IF you use them; dog parks is not for your dog. Instead, find an older, balanced dog that you can go on WALKS with. The key here being MOVEMENT. To elaborate; if you go to a dog park, you will get an anxious dog that clings to your leg - usually getting swarmed by other dogs. Instead - if you're on a walk, you keep your dog in constant motion, not letting the dogs brain go into "fear mode" that easy. So, to sum up: find an older and balanced dog, and go EXPLORE together. I noticed you use flat collar. My dog uses prong. Can you still use this method with prong too?
