I had a white woman in our group while visiting Jacksonville FL just sitting in this hotels lobby lounge where we were staying in being told that we had to leave , and a group of white folks across the way weren't told they had to leave the lobby. The white woman notice this discrimination that just took place and got up and told the employee off, then the manager got involved and apologized and told us we can stay where we were. I praise that women for that, and she passed away a few years ago, though I will never forget her actions that night.

Many years ago I worked in Detroit for a small blk business. I’m a white female. I was the only white employee. I had met the owner when we were co workers at a different job. She later opened her own business and asked me to come work for her. I jumped at the chance to work for her! I later found out that She caught so much crap for having me work for her. She was accused of being a front, that the business was really owned by me. She was given crap just for hiring a white person. But she stood fast in her decision. She told them I wasn’t looking at color when I hired my employee. I was looking at talent and she has the talent and drive I need here. I might not have known everyone in the area at the time but everyone knew who I was cause I was the only white person working in a 10 blk radius. That was 20+ years ago. And we are still friends and despite the distance ( I live in Tx she’s in Mi) between us we consider each other family. There is NEVER an excuse for racism not ever!

In 1973 my husband's military career took us to Montgomery, Alabama. I went to work for a nursing pool, meaning I would work wherever an RN was needed. My first assignment was graveyard shift in a small hospital of about 50 beds in the city center. I was stared at by several people as I walked into the building but no one said anything. This seemed strange but turned out to be the least of many unusual things. First, I found out I was the only nurse in the entire hospital, meaning I was responsible for every one of those 50 beds. This included emergency, surgery, labor and delivery, nursery, and general wards. Next, I discovered I was the only white person in the entire building. Third, I discovered the absolute poverty of the hospital. There were no supplies of basic needs, such as wash clothes or even toilet paper let alone medications. Fourth, since I had only been in Alabama a few days and grew up in North Dakota, I could not understand most of the words spoken by staff and patients alike. Fifth, the wounds from diabetes that were suffered were unimaginable and were poorly treated, causing me to break out in tears at some of them. Sixth, given the recent riots in society the young people hated me, the elderly people feared me, and only the middle aged gave me a chance to prove myself. I was exposed to much racism throughout that night from most of the staff as well as the patients. Seventh, as I walked to my car in the morning, swearing I would never work there again, I was subjected to hatred from the white people who watched me leave the hospital, with jeers that I won't repeat. The racism was coming at me from both sides. I was too exhausted to care after taking care of the entire hospital for 10 hours. Eighth and last, I called my boss and quit the nursing pool because I could not leave that hospital subject to no or inadequate nurses. I went to work directly for the hospital and worked that night shift for a full year. Eventually, I was accepted by the staff and most of the patients, but not by the people outside of the hospital. I was 29 years old in 1973. I am now 80 and it makes me sad and angry that this type of racism is still this strong in Alabama and throughout the country. Sorry this is so long, but the message is so important. When I started that night I saw black faces and heard a foreign language. When the night was over I saw people who were sick or injured and needed my skills. They spoke to me in a language that I grew to admire but could never quite speak correctly. I wouldn't give up that experience for anything.

@@Breeze-d3v No apology needed. It was an eye opener for me. As a child in North Dakota I never saw a black person. There the racism was against Native tribes. I remember being 9 years old, arguing with my parents who believed Natives were "dirty" because they rarely bathed in the winter. I tried to tell my parents it was because it is freezing cold 8 months of the year and people on the reservations lived in shacks with no heat and no running water. They melted snow for water. Who would bathe in that cold? Plus if you can't afford bread you can't afford soap. Anyway, that night made me realize the depth and expanse of racism between people of all skin colors, religions, etc. and how foolish it is. I am grateful for the lessons I learned that I could pass on to my children.

I noticed my friend, Lay, a black woman, was looking uncomfortable. I asked her if everything was okay, and she just gave me a dismissive answer... Once I finished eating, I excused myself to step outside for a smoke. Lay came out shortly after and told me that she was worried because all the other patrons were staring at her and would quickly look away if she met their glances... We went back inside to wait for the bill and I began to observe... She was right. I was MORTIFIED! Never been so embarassed in my life.
