Hey JR, thanks man! The only complication I like beyond the three hands is the power reserve indicator telling me when it needs winding. Not a huge date window fan except on my Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa XL there's that big 3-day vide at 6 o'clock. That I like. Cheers, Bill

WatchArtSci Agree on power reserve, manual wind watches need it. I like few complications too ... Date and GMT are my favorite. But a no-date 3-hand can be perfection.

Thanks Bill for this very informative reply, talk about stellar qualifications what a brilliant and talented family. I remember Zeiss cameras and zeiss lenses, top quality. Growing up my father had a Zeiss camera, that was stolen but I still fondly remember it. Also Zeiss recently dabbled in cameras making. I have a soft spot for independent watch makers, we desperately need them.

Helloo good man.I deeply respect and appreceate your videos, the way you look, valuate and "judge" the watches.I had a pleasure to visit Lang&Heyne workshop. It is experience which open my eyes about "high horology" production. At the moment I was there, the guy was making Bridge of Georg, after CNC milling. Hours of handwork. Amazing. Just an example.And that is what makes difference.My opinion is that everybody who would understand horology should deasambled, exam and asambled back an movement.I should like to send you some pics I made visiting.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I imagine a remontoir is the escapement sends each impulse of power to the remontoir, and the remontoir regulates the actual impulse to the seconds, minute gears and motion works.

Hi Ryvr, did I muddle it up? Essentially, the hairspring in the the remontioir moves the escape gear once every second. The rest of the gears take care of the minutes and hours off the seconds. That's why the second remontoir has jumping seconds in the center dial second hand. Cheers, Bill

@@watchartsci what a beautiful watch, where can I study a movement’s pros and cons Bill? For example the Valjoux VZSS, I can’t find information about it like other movements. Only thing I know is that Dufour’s Simplicity movement is based on the valjoux vzss, but that watch is simply just out of reach.

@@watchartsci Hi Bill, We know Rolex and PP will be here for years to come. I have a couple of questions. With these small independent very fine watch brands like Voutilainen and Lang & Heyne. Let's say if someone buys a Lang & Heyne watch and when Marco Lang passes on years later and the company does not exist anymore, (1) who can service the watch and (2) will the watch still retain its value? @@eugenejohnson7755 First of all, Marco got squeezed out of his own company, Lang & Heyne after 2018. Now, Lang & Heyne are responsible for service. The only thing new that's come out of L&H since Marco's departure is the Hector with the UWD 33.2 movement. The UWD 33.1 was Marco's invention, and the current watchmakers simply movement the second hand to the center and called it USD 33.2 instead of 33.1. Will the watch retain its value? All watches retain their horological value, and certainly the high such value of L&H watches are unlikely to ever lose their real value. Will the price go down. Mine has gone up in price, as have my FP Journes and H. Mosers and Bovet ... but happily they have all maintained their horological values. Take care, Bill

Eddie, ... since you asked: He did start later in life (He was 66 when he kicked off Rolf Lang Dresden in 2012), but with his background, this may be a master watchmaker who may create something all of us would like. At the time of his matriculation examination Rolf Lang worked as a precision mechanics specialist in VEB Carl Zeiss Jena Company (1968 - 1969) and, from 1969, for his father’s company. Rolf also served in the National People’s Army (1969 - 1971). Rolf Lang showed himself to be a skilled artisan from a young age and knew a lot about the secrets of the art of watchmaking, and so he was able to obtain the title of Master-watchmaker. From 1971 to 1976 Rolf Lang worked as a watchmaker for the VEB technical repair company which gave him an opportunity to become a master of manufacturing training in Jena, Germany. Then he moved to Dresden where he continued working for the VEB. In Dresden Rolf was expected to get the managing position so he worked as the service workshop master in the sphere of watch repairs until 1979. Simultaneously Rolf Lang was studying at the High School of Economics and Finance in absentia with a certificate after graduating, as well as attending a restorers’ course in the German Museum of Berlin (1981 - 1985). After receiving admittance as a watch restorer Rolf Lang spent much time restoring historical watches with the second balance wheel as well as marine chronometers and other precious timepieces. At the same time Lang worked as a part-time watch restorer for the Dresden Mathematical and Physics Society (1979 - 1989). There he had a chance to observe one of the largest collections of watches and precise mechanic instruments and, due to his job, Rolf Lang could study the mechanics of the watches as well as some relevant technology of handmade watches. In 1981 Rolf Lang founded the “Watch Restorers” group in Dresden and became their principal. In 1987 Mr Lang became the Principal Restorer of the Dresden Mathematical and Physics Society. Furthermore, since 1988 he has been an active member of the German Society of Watch Chronometry. In 1989 Rolf Lang founded his own restoration workshop in Dresden. The programme of the workshop involved historical timepiece restoration as well as design of new makes of high quality watches. The principal milestone in Rolf Lang’s career was the opening of the company branch in Glashütte in 1990, immediately after German Reunification. Furthermore, the foundation of a joint venture company A. Lange & Söhne in Glashütte in 1994 contributed to Lang’s fame as an accomplished watchmaker. Not only was Mr Lang the model designer, he was also responsible for professional training (beginning in 1999). From 2001 to 2002 Rolf Lang worked on a special project as 38 gauge watch chief designer (a project which is still ongoing). From 2003 to 2007 Rolf Lang was a manager and Chief Model Designer for Moser and Cie, Schaffhausen; in 2004 he founded The Circle of Interests of Saxon Watchmaking Art and Craft. In 2007 he returned to the Tutima Branch, Glashütte, as the Chief of Design Department. There Mr Lang created the first minute repeater as a wristwatch in Germany, which was another important milestone in his career as a watchmaker. Since 2012 Rolf Lang started working on creating his own trademark of watches, Rolf Lang Dresden

Boy that Augustus I is something else! Would you say that these are all around better watches than what A Lange can put forward at each corresponding price point? It’s hard to imagine Lange being outdone in terms of movement quality and finishing, at least in their higher value offerings.

Daniele, keep in mind that A. Lange has become part of a huge juggernaut - The Richemont Group... while Lang & Heyne, while losing their main watchmaker/designer (Marco Lang), is independent. Further, the company has kept producing the products of Marco's genius; so I definitely side with Lang & Heyne while appreciating that A. Lange is still a fabulous watchmaker. Take care, Bill

I've been looking at ways I could possibly visit Dresden and Glasshütte taking the train from Nuremberg for a short visit next year (2019). I'll be in Nuremberg for a few days and spending the day visiting Lange & Heyne and then A. Lange & Söhne, Moritz Grossmann, Glashütte Original, Nomos and others would be very interesting. Hey Derek, when I look at the staff and realize they only make about 50 watches a year with great care; the price doesn't seem so bad. The fact that I cannot afford them is that the company would go out of business if they sold them for what I could afford. I'll just wait until they arrive in the used market...hoping they don't hold their value or go up in price!! Cheers, Bill
