Great watch talk folks. Please discuss the future of independent watch making in upcoming programs. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts about it. Think it's growing so fast that it might become main stream. The question then is what's next in this field of horology? Cheers, Amintas

These comments reinforced the confidence in my personal picks. People mentioning Rolex, Omega and Patek prove that marketing truly drives the watch media Zeitgeist and authentically justifying them relies on the old “status and quality” argument.

There's an amazing amount of unique componentry in that model given how niche and low-volume it was. I imagine the bill for its development must have been huge. The Apnea strikes me as more a labor of love by Omega than an earnest attempt to sell watches on a celebrity ambassador basis. Best, Tim

Watch Enthusiast London has shared his experience of being thrown into a pool while wearing one of his Lange watches, and having water ingress into the movement (even though the crown was pushed in). I applaud Patek’s statement on what its 30m water resistance means, but I don’t trust every brand to survive accidental submersion.
@the1916company
@the1916company Ай бұрын
Were the watches new? 30m needs to be tested constantly to ensure that it's still valid. I've seen plenty of 30m watches survive swimming, and refinishers often watch the fully reassembled 30m dress watch cases under a stream of water to remove polishing compound. In general, however, I always advise people not to swim with anything that isn't at least 50m with a screw-down crown. If the OEM approves something less for swimming, then at least you could theoretically make a claim for warranty coverage if the watch is fairly new and fails given that use case. Best, Tim

I agree on both counts. There's quite a few Duometre models now, but the hammered dial UTT, WG chronograph, and the enamel 40.5mm Quantieme Lunaire are my favorites. If I were to return to JLC collecting, one of these would be an anchor of my collection. Best, Tim

The udea of spending 10k AUD on a watch and getting a rubber band just doesnt seem right. Perhaps if there was something stunning about dial or case to "make up for it ". I understand that it may suit the look of the watche better but if im soending rhat much i want something more impreswive than a rubber band.

If it looks like a Rolex, feels like a Rolex and functions like a Rolex then it must be a Rolex. Firstly, thank for your content, it's insightful, well written and presented. I have recently become interested in watches though I wouldn't consider myself a collector, more someone with time on my hands and a mild enthusiast. My wife purchased a James Cameron Deepsea for me earlier this year and I enjoy the watch very much. I'm a surfer and I like the idea that if I sink to the bottom of the sea my D-Blue will tick on long after I perish. The topic of replica or clone watches and what these simulacra or copies imply is of interest to me. At a recent party I was comparing watches with a friend who travels to Hong Kong regularly and he mentioned that he was purchasing some super clones on his next visit and would I be like to get one. I said yes and he got me a black dial Submariner and a Panda Daytona each for $1000 Australian dollars. I only really buy Rolexes, not because I'm a snob but because I like them and there are just too many nice watches out there from great brands and I fear falling down the rabbit hole of collecting. (I do like the Breitling Datora however and now it's preying on my mind, dam). I'm happy with both replicas and wear them around the house though I always take my "real' Deepsea out as I don't like leaving it at home because it's so expensive and I fear for its safety when not with me. If I did wear my replicas out and someone asked me about them, which I feel is unlikely as most people don't care about these things, I would happily tell them they're clones. I think that someone who considers another poorly because they wear a "fake" watch are just as "fake". The clones look the same as the "real thing" though the finishing is not quite as good, the edges on the replica Submariner bracelet are a little sharper, but apart from that there is no discernable difference to my untrained eye. My replicas are actually keeping better time than my six-year-old second hand Deepsea which I should probably service soon though I don't wish to be parted from it for the two months it takes to service and the fact it's losing a couple of minutes a week is not that much of a concern. How do these replicas make me feel? I have positive and negative feelings about the clones. Every Rolex that is produced at the Switzerland factory is a copy of the previous one and I think that my Chinese Rolex is just a copy of a copy. Use of the word fake is not correct because it implies that the replica is not real whereas is it quite real and functions as such. After buying the replicas wearing my "real" Deepsea feels more important and less important at the same time. More important as it is a lot more expensive and the "real deal" so it carries more weight in my mind at the same time it is also less meaningful as it is just another commodity made on a factory assembly line and in no way 25 times better than the clone which makes me think I'm paying mostly for the Rolex brand which reveals that I too can be shallow and that concerns me somewhat. At the same time wearing the replica is not as "real' and has less statue, though not by much. Wearing the replica is less stressful as I'm not so concerned about damaging it which is a positive as I do fuss about my Deepsea. Rolex makes a million or so watches each year but I hazard to think that the Chinese Rolex factories make more which begs the question who is more relevant or important. If people like these replicas and pay good money for and enjoy them is that wrong? French post-modern philosopher Jean Baudrillard said the simulacrum, which is the copy, of which everything is, is never that which hides the truth, it's the truth that conceals that there is none. So, I ask, where is the truth in watches. I would very much appreciate for you to broach this subject with your creative mind and hear what your opinion on this divisive topic is in one of your videos, yours sincerely Bodford Blue

More hype on FP Journe's original resonance watch?! First, there is not one shred of rigorous scientific evidence that the watch works as intended. In fact, those who know the watch, if objective, will tell you that it does not work well. Also, there is no magic to the resonance phenomenon. It is a lawful physical phenomenon that has been well-studied and analyzed! It is also ridiculous to say that there is no coupling in FP Journe's watch. Just as in pendulum resonance clocks, the shared upper base "plate" by both pendulums (base metal plate by both balance wheel bridges/assemblies in the case of the watch) are the coupling medium via which the vibrational energy is shared! Unfortunately, the amount of energy produced by tiny balance wheels is miniscule compared to that of pendulums in pendulum clocks, thereby negating a robust and reliable effect. And true, the coupling in the AS does not take place via a shared plate offering weak energy transfer but more directly between the balance springs themselves. That is why, unlike the base plate system in the FP, it is far more effective. Ergo, given its inferior movement finishing when compared to the elite and its intrinsic technical limitations and unrealistic claims, the FP Journe brass resonance watch is probably the most overhyped watch of all time!
