I highly suggest removing the balance movement before removing the canon pinion . From experience learned the hard way .

Thank You for the video. While at Renninger Flea market in Pa I purchased an Elgin 1930's automotive 83 mm clock for $20.00. The balance is intact, the hands move, and it looks nice and dirty. I'm going to Slowly take it apart and see what I can do to get it running again. Hopefully my results will be better than when I took apart my first micky mouse pocket watch some 65 years ago.

Thank you for this!! I'm new to this hobby and I have this exact movement although mine is Nickle. Mine has a broken main spring and needs service bad! Your video helped me to understand all the winding mechanism stuff cause it's a little different than the Walthams I have worked on!! :D

Thanks! great video, helped me get my Elgin (1873) up and running. My upper balance hole jewel needs replacing, runs perfect on its face, makes contact with the bridge when turned over. Where do you source upper balance hole jewel and the crystal?

enjoyed the video as I have the exact watch you used in your video. the only thing not mentioned was the cost of the service with shipping. my watch is complete. just needs to be serviced and polished so it works properly.

Peter this video was so interesting and helpful. When my dad passed in January, mom gave me two pocket watches that belonged to his grandfather. Neither are working, many I suspect are similar to exactly what you did with these watches. They are Elgin 14033238 and 21182949. I don't believe they have more than a $50 value (each) when running perfectly - but I did think about restoring them for each of my children to have as inheritance items from me. Neither have a crystal. The 18s winds, but doesn't keep time and stops after about 10 minutes. Both the cap and the back spin off nicely. It has a broken hour arm. The 16s has a missing stem crown, is locked (doesn't wind) and the cap won't spin off, but the back will. They appear to be reasonably clean - excepting for age, and I didn't see any "rust" - just grime. If you have time to reply, I'd be curious to learn more about restorations. Thank you. Steve Vance

Looking for some advice: I got a nice vintage pocket watch from my grandad and have been winding it every day for 4 months so far. The habit is quite soothing. But I'm going on holiday in a few weeks and don't really want to take it with me to avoid ruining the metal with sun cream or sweat (it's a hot sunny place). Will it be ok for it to not get wound for 2 weeks?

Yes. Generally speaking. They will usually seize up if left in poor condition for a long time

@@watchesandjewelry Thanks a lot. I'll leave it at home then. Knew someone on YT would help out but I wasn't expecting a channel owner. I'll watch & like a couple of vids as thanks. Out of curiosity would it be better to always leave it at home if traveling abroad? I'm in the UK so the weather is usually moderate. Wouldn't plane conditions and then heat on landing cause the fine metal parts to contract & expand a bit causing damage?

Love your videos very instructive and easy to follow the only criticism is can you stop the music when your talking it’s very annoying. Keep the videos coming

I don't mind the music. It's very non intrusive, it's instrumental, and it's mixed way down below your narration.

@@Tmanaz480 you might not mind the music that’s your opinion I like to listen to what the person has to say, I don’t see the need for background music that’s my personal preference I am sure you are entitled to yours

I have an Elgin with a S/N of 7631446. It's been completely filled with dirt, and I hear something moving inside, indicating something inside is loose. Just taking the back off, I can see a jewel is broken. Front glass missing, all hands missing, and the face is cracked. I'm not sure if I should get it repaired or not. I have a few more pocketwatches, with only one really working. I'm not a super pocketwatch nerd, as I just started looking into watches as a whole yesterday, and then I remembered that my dad gave these to me because we found them in storage units.

Hi Peter, I enjoyed your video! I am not an “enthusiast” yet, but having just inherited an old Elgin pocket watch admit to being very interested at the least. After watching you refurbish this watch I have a much greater appreciation for these mechanical marvels and a new found respect for those craftsmen who keep them in good repair. With that in mind, how might I contact you to arrange service for my watch as I am not on Facebook and no longer see your contact info on your website? Regards, C

HI Peter - I very much enjoy your videos. Two questions: [1] How can you tell a jewel inclusion from a crack, and [2] do you lube between the balance jewels? Thanks.
@watchesandjewelry
@watchesandjewelry 2 жыл бұрын
So, get a good 10x loupe. Something that jewelers and watchmakers use. If you are on a budget, you can get a cheap one at harbor freight. A crack in a jewel is like broken glass. It will usually have chip marks on it. Inclusions are like streaks embedded inside the jewel. Hard to explain, but you can see the difference clear enough under magnification.

@@watchesandjewelry thank you for this Peter. I work at a historical farm museum. And have been looking for a base good working watch for the site. Most I see for sale are collectors watches. One, I wouldn't feel right to use it at work ,two, they are to pricey for a work watch. Thank you for replying, cheers ,walter.
