You won't be sorry that you bought a generator. We had a terrific rainstorm hit years ago here in Chicago, where the power was out for about 3 to 4 days. It was hell when EVERYONE is out all at once, but things like this can bring a whole neighborhood together to help each other out. There was a retired lady behind us in the Alley (I wrote about Mary Anne, the woman beloved by Golden our shared cat). We could not let her flounder, so we got extra extension cords and hooked her up so all her food would not go bad, that was essentially what we were all after. We all had candles, and we had lamp oil and old-timey lamps, (that one fills with oil and burns.) so we were set at night. We who had generators shared with those who did not have them. We also kept our neighbors to the South, who were 2 Seniors, on our generator as well. We did fine until the power was turned on again. I think it made such an impression on the Senior couple that they had their son go out after the event and buy them a generator. We had a break in on our garage and that was one of the things that they stole on us, and we replaced it and now keep it in a crawlspace behind a big locked metal door. We are ready for the next storm, because with our changing climate weather, AND living in Chicago, there is always "the next storm" out there. I head that about your water situation, even with a well, get yourself a Birkey water filter and you will be fine. Unclean water is the thing that will kill you, or at least make you incredibly sick.

I love thunderstorms (well, they are not life threatening). When I lived with my parents, we had a screened in porch and I would sit outside during storms. We had a cat that sometimes would sit outside with me too. It was funny how the cat was usually not scared of thunder. I always assumed it was because I was there with him and he must have felt secure. I miss those days. Life felt so simple back then. Also, right on about having a generator. It is one of life's necessities (along with having a cat). 😀

We have a generator. It came in handy for the last power failure we had, out for about 5 days. Our neighbors came over for water, but we were inside and able to take showers, very important. Cinnabon is happy inside, safe from the storm. He's so cute.

You're right about the generator. First six months we had a blackout about every 5 to 6 weeks. Got a generator. Not another blackout for years. The power went out at least twice across the street, but our side was good to go.

Lex, you are smart for getting a generator. Everyone is different. That same person will want to borrow some power when there is blackout. He is prob the one that is the chewer and doesn’t like Yoo-hoo either. 😺.

If you are getting a $1k portable generator you will only be able to reliably power a couple of things (furnace/freezer/ refrigerator) and you must have it vented outdoors. The Generac option (no I don't sell them) has several advantages: It is already outside the house; it is powered by natural gas; it has automatic switching so that your entire house is switched over in an emergency; it starts up periodically to ensure that it is always ready to go.

I fed a colony of feral cats in Florida- A hurricane came through and it rained HARD for 36 hours straight-20 minutes after it stopped, all the cats came to the feeding area BONE DRY. Cats know where to go in their area for protection from all nature situations. Also we had one very long haired cat who would often just stand in the rain when all the others were in their secret 'dry spot' .

We finally got some rain here today in central FL after not having any for the past 2 weeks. It wouldn't have been so bad except the daily high temps are still in the high 80s and low 90s, do everything it really getting dried out. Cinnabon looks so comfy being inside during the storm. My cat likes being inside too when we have bad storms. I kept her in overnight when hurricane Dorian was off the coast and so powerful, and we weren't sure exactly where it would go. Thankfully it didn't come here!

I have a lot of old currency, like $2 bills from 1928, silver certificates, etc. I used to work retail as a cash balancer back in the late 80's and early 90,s. I got to purchase any currency and coins that came in at face value that I wanted for my collection. I even paid a penny for a penny-sized copper Civil War token from 1863 from Ohio. We have polymer notes here in Australia with holograms and they have raised indentations for the blind so that they know which denomination it is as our notes are all different colours.

Lex - I totally agree that the new currency looks goofy. The old notes were classier. You may already know this, but a security feature of some of the old notes (maybe even your 1977 $100) are extremely small curved lines of text that usually say “United States of America”. You would need a magnifying glass to read them. The text is too small to be copied by a copy machine or scanner (and virtually impossible to print). I don’t know about the new notes, but the old notes were made of cotton - often from used blue jeans (no kidding!).

Where I live, some people have power outages for as long as 3 weeks in the winter sometimes. My town is pretty good about getting the power back up quickly, but for people who live in the country or in smaller towns, it can be a long time.

Aww right at the start he looks a bit kitteny and cautious but then he just gets used to the storm. I’ve never seen American money up close before - very interesting. Our money notes are now made of some plastic like substance derived from beef tallow!! There’s been a big fuss about it from vegetarians and vegans. Oh and we have a 50 year-old out of date picture of the Queen on every note!!

I have lost power several times. One time after a blizzard it was out for several days. I had frozen pipes but thankfully they thawed out without breaking......but l still wouldn't buy a generator. I had a friend who bought one after the blizzard. He spent several grand to get it hooked in to the main power line, then hundreds more to fix it periodically when it breaks down. Then the one time he needs to use it when the power goes out, it doesn't fire up!!! LOL. So no thanks it's not worth the money. Our ancestors did fine for hundreds of years without power, so l figure l can get through a few days without it.

As long as you have a way to stay warm and have light. Our ancestors had fireplaces and candles. My furnace went out once for 3 days when it was 10° outside. I only noticed after 2 days, and on the 3rd day, I turned on the gas oven and we were fine until my son could come over and fix it. He's a whiz with machinery and electrical stuff. The nice thing about a small house - just turning on the lights keeps the house up to temperature without much help from the furnace.

@@edennis3202 l wish l did have a fireplace or wood stove. But my house is too small to fit one. But l remember it was very cold and l think it got down to 30 degrees inside although it stayed relatively warm for the first day. I had to go to my car to get warm and charge my phone. But the chances of that happening again are not very likely.

Watching this after the family 15 year old tabby Jada had to be put down. 😔 Blind due to high blood pressure caused by a lump on her heart, in addition to a collapsed fluid-filled lung causing breathing issues. RIP Super J ❤️
