In the 90s, we kids grew up to kid movies with stories like this that tackle harsh realities of life and death. Nowadays movies aimed at kids would never come near a topic like this.

A couple of fun facts: James (the father) and Kat (the daughter) have the last name Harvey. That is a tribute to Harvey Comics, which was the publisher of the "Casper the Friendly Ghost" comic book that the movie was based on. The priest was played by Don Novello. He was a fairly popular comedian in the 1980's, playing a priest called "Father Guido Sarducci". If you can find recordings of his comedy bits, give them a listen. His "Five Minute University" was pretty funny. He also did a lot of guest appearances on Saturday Night Live.
