I didn’t even watch SpongeBob regularly but when I was about 14, I started hyper fixating on the eyes and facial expressions on SpongeBob characters. My own style isn’t anywhere close to SpongeBob but having it as a reference really helped me with drawing a variety of expressive faces.

In my college, one of the animation exercises was to study episodes of spongebob and try emulating the elements that make it so unique. Studying animation frame by frame is definitely one of the best ways to get started in animation as well as learning how to storyboard. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 😊

what inspires me into animation is the LEGO Monkie Kid show made by Frying Bark studio which also was working on Rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles 2018. the sakuga animation in Monkie kid improved a lot after the critics that the studio got after RotTMNT, and it's just something special to finally see the lego show made not to advertise lego sets, it does the opposite thing - the sets are more like an addition to the show itself, like a fan merch. beside that, its not 3D, it's 2D animated! i absolutely love the amount of details in the show, the amount of references to the ancient book it was based off, attention to character designes and ambient, literally every screenshot from this show can do as a wallpaper, even the funny ones - there're a lot of those! and lots of references, too - at least 2 Jojo references i spotted. i love this show so much i wish i had the same skill as the animatora have

How would i describe SpongeBob SquarePants? Well it's kinda like your best friend that you really have fun hanging around with. And it's also a teacher, always giving great advice and inspiring you. There's just something about SpongeBob that just makes me go *YES* because of that fancy metaphor. It's simply inspiring. A lot of my animated work can always be traced back to SpongeBob in some way (And Ren and Stimpy too i guess). And studying the movements and watching the episodes really does improve my skills. Say what you will about the quality of Modern SpongeBob but i am glad a classic and good looking cartoon can exist on TV these days and hopefully inspire a lot of young artists in a similar way to how we were inspired! Thank you Stephen (R.I.P) for making the best cartoon ever!

I’ve been studying older Mickey Mouse cartoons, the rubberhose ones, not the crappy 3D ones. Learning a lot from it. I’ve always struggled with smear frames, my smear frames don’t feel like motion, so seeing stuff like Goofy clapping super fast in the newer rubber hose Mickey Mouse cartoons definitely helped a lot.

Pink Panther. Aeon Flux. Bugs Bunny. The sillier the cartoon the better. 2d isn't going anywhere because of the ability to suspend the disposition of reality.

I'll admit, it's sad that "Be true to yourself" isn't the norm anymore for some reason. Whenever I see people talk about popular shows they worked on, they often said they did what they thought was funny, and you can tell how genuine the jokes, art, etc., are when they do this. Following trends doesn't make it fresh. Doing what you think other people will think is funny is disingenuine and hard to measure its effectiveness. Creating something according to an original vision in your head means that it's more likely to be original and thus catch attention since media is filled with so many clones trying to capitalize on trends that die out. I guess this only backfires if your genuine vision is just uninteresting to other people, but then I'm not sure why you'd be in such a high position if that was the case or it would make more sense to make something more niche and find an audience for that.

Here's my answer to why animators are dedicated to tell stories: Because we have that creative itch to make cartoons that has the potential to become narrative art. So long as you know your inspiration, the tone and genre of what gives cartoons an identity and are familiar with narratology such as the story circle, then we can begin to see how characters and ideas can play out in scenarios. I think it's important that these cartoons exist as a visual gallery of storytelling to all audiences, not only because it offers a form of escapism but as a source of creativity that ignites engagement and inspires personalities. The kind of cartoons that brings friends and families together helps evoke connections; interlinking passions openly to each other. If cartoons back then like Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and Disney are proof that what gives cartoons and animation significance thanks to the dedicated creatives that passionately want their vision to spark enjoyment (so long its not propaganda), who's to say we don't have that capacity as artists?
