Every time I watch Seth I realize how little I know about a game I’ve been watching all my life. Nice work, brother.

Great job as always! Love the breakdown and objectivity. The more I study his Napier’s system the more I appreciate how adaptive it is around different QB’s skill sets. It’s so important to point out how limited the play calling is this year without Wilson in the lineup. He is so versatile and dynamic. Also, Boardingham’s development has been so key as well as he has gotten more in game reps. The better our personnel gets through recruiting the more “creative and explosive” every good play caller looks. I am old enough to remember in 05 & 06 when Urban & Mullen’s offense looked very pedestrian on most weeks with Leak at QB & Percy and Tebow were Freshmen. Then comes 07 & 08!

Great insights & perspective! Appreciate the neutral lens through which you filter the film assessment, especially acknowledging you don’t have their game plan, defensive tendencies chart, or All 22 film! Just sharing what you see on the film, which is a relief from the world of film breakdown “gurus “ who are ready to offer what would have worked….thanks again & go Gators!

Good presentation. Just feels like the offense is maturing naturally. Year 2, playbook has been installed, younger guys starting to understand their jobs, so now Napier is able to mix up the formations a little bit. Pass catchers like Wilson, Jackson, and Boardingham emerging as threats and good 1on1 matchups has made Napiers offense look a lot more viable. Just imagine if all the plays Tre Wilson has made this year were given to Xavier Henderson like last year. We would be 2-5.

Mertz is progressing with the playbook as the season progresses. The players, so you, playing more as a team as the season has progressed. If they take another step in the right direction it could get interesting. The D'Showing last week is hopefully a one off, better play calling wasn't there for the D. Beat those dogs!

Not sure if you’ve written about this already, but I’m curious what you think about the design and Napier as OC. Is this a poorly designed offense that only succeeded against Scar because they’re bad? Or is it a well-designed offense that just needs the right players to execute it? Or somewhere in between? Great video!

Thanks for the breakdown. That part that doesn't feel fully addressed in this breakdown that GNFP points out well the context of when the concepts are called. Down and distance and what is being presented in the box. So this feels a little straw man. Sure the concepts have been run before. There are only so many routes in the route tree. I think the GNFP point was the consistent commitment to vertical passing concepts all game, pretty much abandoning the run. So what would have actually been an enlightening comparison is to the film presented in an apples to apples way, meaning finding the same situation (down, distance, game situation) from other games and see if the same plays are called with the same concepts ivs SCAR. The eye test suggest that there was more passing on passing downs and even on run downs than other games. Er go, the passing game used when there was more willingness to pass, would need to be different

Which where an OC that gets the reigns to the offense and can sit in the box would help. So go off of what you said I feel like he just calls the wrong plays sometimes and has an issue with sticking to the tendencies almost hoping things work even against the wrong defensive look

TL;DR: Yes, we ran many of the same pass plays we always do. But we ran way more of them and at very different times (e.g., first AND second down). Do you acknowledge that regardless of what plays were called, the overall tendencies were quite different? What I get from this analysis is that there isn't much innovation or variety in this offense. Showing how we've run the same plays over and over from season to season doesn't seem to disprove the narrative that we need a new OC with new designs and/or more creativity in play calling. You showed similar plays being run, but without comment on how wildly unsuccessful many of them were/are. In several cases, the defense wasn't fooled at all and the result was a sack or a throw away. I'm well aware that we've been running that flood concept with a boot to the right over and over and over again. I groan whenever I see it. Opposing DCs don't though. The fact remains that it is not very hard to get a defense coached up to defend us. Just ask Mark Stoops. In one of your clips against UK, we shifted the running back out wide and the UK DBs glanced at each other with a hand signal, shifted, and then proceeded to run the routes for the receivers. I fully agree that we run the same plays we always have, even last week. The real difference last week was the frequency and timing of called pass plays, which is what leads people to speculate there was some change in the play calling structure. I do think your point about Mertz pushing the ball more is valid, but that may also be a result of him simply getting more opportunities to do it.
