It is about when a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

Always fun to watch someone react to one of these classics for the first time. I saw this in the movie theater when I was 9 years old. Scared the hell outta me lol.

I was about the same age, a little older and I was paralyzed with fear afterward. I wouldn't even hang a hand or foot over the edge of my bed for fear the shark would bite it off! lol I didn't swim in anything, ocean, lake, even pools for years after that. I still don't swim in the ocean. For a nearly 50 year old movie, Jaws was and still is a terrifying movie.

My old bus lived in an an apartment complex with huge pools. They’d do movie nights at the pool occasionally for the people living there. She said there’s nothing like laying on a float in the pool watching Jaws. There was an occasional scream because the kids would swim under the water and grab peoples feet. All the lights were out so you couldn’t see them at all.

I love seeing people experience this movie for the first time. Like many of the classics, the film hits as hard as it did almost 50 years ago. Thanks for sharing TJ!

In 1975 I was 16 years old when I went to the theater to watch Jaws. I was traumatized. 😂 However, I highly recommend watching the documentary about the making of JAWS. It’s really interesting!

One of the most dangerous shark species is the bull shark. They are one of the most dangerous in the fact they can swim in not only salt water but also fresh water. A bull shark was caught on rod and reel just north of St. Louis, MO. in the Mississippi River quite a few years back. That is 650 miles inland from the ocean. They have the highest testosterone of all the shark species which makes them very aggressive. They hunt in shallow waters along the beach where people are most of the time.

The most dangerous shark is the Bull Shark. Not only are they territorial, which makes them aggressive, they are able to survive in freshwater. Bull sharks have been found in the Mississippi river, almost all the way up to Ohio, and in the Potomac River in MD where they enter via the Chesapeak Bay.

facts about sharks: sharks usually attack from below, if you can see their fin on the water you don't have to worry, if they dive under...start worrying. the majority of shark breeds are not dangerous to humans in fact most shark attacks are accidental, sharks mistake us for food they would rather eat (which is why they leave some of us behind) sharks are drawn to vibrations in the water; splashing, noise even rythmic sound like a helicopter flying too low. they can smell blood for miles, one drop of blood in the water is a real draw for sharks. after sharks have a big meal they are likely to move on, they aren't territorial, by the time they found that poor girl on the beach...that shark was probably long gone. Jaws does get a few things wrong about sharks...but it;s still a great film...it's the iconic film about why we all developed the fear of sharks.

How was it “slightly her fault” that the mother at the beach let her son go swimming? She didn’t even know that there had been a shark attack in the area.

The news reporter who did like a 10 min screen shot was the actual writer of this book. that this movie based on. . I saw this movie in theatres 1975 and NO ONE anywheres was swimming in the ocean that summer. .

33:29 Yes, drowning means suffering or dying from a lack of oxygen in water. Counts for fish, too. Unlike most other sharks, Great Whites need to keep moving forward to pump water through their gills to get oxygen. Drawing the shark into the shallows, there's a good chance they could trap it between two shoals where it can't get out, which would at least tire it out, or drown it entirely.

This was Steven Spielberg's first big hit and it was filmed on Martha's Vineyard so, yes Amity Island was fictional. 6:56 The boy who got eaten by the shark was a local kid, not an actor, but he did pretty good! Hey, there's still plenty of time to go on a trip to the seaside & do some swimming. It's only August!

sharks have been around for eons in some form...the biggest shark to ever exist was the Megladon and those ate wales...but those went extinct ages ago (there is a film about those called The Meg). now the biggest sharks are whale sharks but they are harmless to humans. the biggest maneater is the Great White (which is what Jaws is). Great White's are usually around 19-20 ft at most and that's pushing it (i won't soil how big this shark is). It's rare humans keep Great White's in captivity...too big. sharks have very thick skin and multiple layers of teeth. their digestion is very slow, once they eat they use the food for a long time. the only vulnerable part of their body really is the underbelly, eyes and gills...well unless you include the inside.

>> One in 3.7 million - that is the probability of being attacked by a shark, according to the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Experts believe that the panic fear of sharks is greatly exaggerated. “You're more likely to be killed by a falling coconut than by a shark bite,” says Robert Hueter, Director of the Shark Research Center in Sarasota, Florida. According to experts, the probability of being killed in a shark attack is even lower. In 2016, 53 shark attacks were recorded in the USA, none of them fatal. In contrast, around 150 people worldwide are struck by a coconut on beaches every year. In fact, it is more likely to die from the flu (one in 36) or in a car accident (one in 90), to be struck by lightning (one in 960,000) or an asteroid (one in 1.6 million) than to die in a shark attack.
