Okay so first and foremost this is a modernized adaptation of the Charles Dickens story Oliver Twist about an orphan boy who sets out for London to seek his fortune and meets Fagin an old man who has a group of Children pick pockets including the main one named Dodger and for a human version of this story I would recommend the musical film version from 1968, The opening song is sung by Huey Lewis who did the two songs for Back to the Future and the song was written by Howard Ashman who would work with Alan Menken on Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin before Ashman’s his death from Aids, Billy Joel absolutely loves his city of New York and besides voicing Dodger also wrote the song Why Should I Worry and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Song, if for some reason you don’t know who he is he wrote and sang songs such as Piano Man, New York State of Mind, The Longest Time, Big Shot, etc, Bette Midler who voices Georgette is more familiar with live action Disney audiences as Winifred in Hocus Pocus and when you see the pictures of dogs she has one of them is supposed to be Scooby Doo on the far right even though he isn’t a Disney character, Cheech Marin is the voice of Tito and was the hyena Bonzai in The Lion King, Dom Delouse has been in a couple of films you have watched so far as Jeremy in Secret of NIMH and Tiger in An American Tail, Similar to 101 Dalmatians there is a few animal cameos in this film with Pongo from Dalmatians appearing as well as several from Lady and the Tramp all during Why Should I Worry, It never made sense to me what Tito was doing in the car with Dodger until I watched along with you and realized they were going to steal the car radio which is why he was cutting the wires so then they could give it to Fagin and he could sell it for money and when Dodger said “work the crowds” while Everyone was focused on Francis in the middle of the road they were going to take the wallets from the people. They don’t make that scene very well explained, but it adds up for me now especially knowing they were scoping out a fancy car to take from, Also in regards to Return to Oz just know it is going to be much much darker the classic with Judy Garland as the books are rather dark so the film matches that tone and just a heads up there is no songs in it,

I also recommend Oliver!, the musical version of Oliver Twist. It’s extremely long though, like Sound of Music long. It’s so long it has a real time intermission that was never cut out for the video release
@forestcatkay143 жыл бұрын
Don’t forget though the musical is more true to the book than the Disney version. I was going to recommend read the book but, well I’m taking a class on the works of Charles Dickens and we also talk about the Victorian Era. And that era is pretty bleak and depressing I don’t think Nick’s sweet heart could handle it. Especially as Fagin and Sikes, and several more members die. I’m glad they didn’t have a Nancy in this film though I think Rita may be Nancy.
@HobGungan3 жыл бұрын
@@forestcatkay14 Plus the fact that in the book Fagin is simply referred to as "The Jew" through 90% of the thing could make first-time readers uncomdortable if not prepared. **(As a Jew myself, I actually love Fagin as a character in most incarnations and I fully acknowledge that Charles Dickens did later speak out against anti-semetism and if memory serves apologized for any damage his careless writing in Oliver Twist may have caused, but it's still very jarring)**
@jamesmoyner74993 жыл бұрын
@@forestcatkay14 Of course the 68 film is more accurate than the Disney version that is a no brainer. Though either you haven’t seen it or are mixing thing up with the book as Fagin does not die and is very likable in the film so much so Ron Moody was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars.

Great choice! The story itself is a retelling of the story of "Oliver Twist"(Charles Dickens), down to the names. Though the story of Dickens tale itself is a great deal darker, so I can understand them Disneyfying it. Tito is voiced by Cheech Marin(who you definitely would know as Banzai, the second of the three hyena's in "Lion King"). Georgette is voiced by Bette Middler(Winnie from "Hocus Pocus"). I actually had the pleasure of working with her on a movie set a year or two back. :) A heartwarming note about Fagin, while he owes so much money to Sikes, he clearly got the bones for the dogs in his first scene.

This movie had one of the best Vocal casts in any animated movie ever. You got Billy Joel as Dodger, Bette Midler as Georgette and Anita Pointer as Rita. Of course the songs are amazing with these music power houses behind them. Also featuring Cheech Marin at Tito, he may not be much of a singer but man is he funny, his voice acting is always great. You even have Dom Deluise as the voice of Fagin. I love this movie, its so underrated.

I haven’t seen this movie in so long. I remember having a VHS and watching all the time as a kid. Until my VHS player broke.

Before Phil Collins went hard in Tarzan, Billy Joel went hard on Oliver and Company, Disney's reimagining of Dickens' classic Oliver Twist. In the Why Should I Worry song - which is a banger - you see Pongo from 101 Dalmatians and the street dogs from Lady and the Tramp which is a couple of cool cameos

*Sees Nick get emotional at the song choices and here I am getting emotional seeing the Twin Towers in every scene they're in* Darn it . . . .

1:58 "So Oliver don't be scared" Me: Why is it that after all these years, the song was referring to Oliver himself?!

It's so sad how this movie has gone under the radar, the characters are lovely, it has so many great songs and the villain is criminally underrated. One of the true hidden gems of Disney

Oliver and Company is an old favorite, I'm glad that you get to share in the joy of it too, now. :) I always loved the scene where Fagin is reading a bedtime story to the dogs in spite of the fact that he didn't know whether or not he'd live past another three days.

Fun fact: one of the writers was James Mangold who directed Cop Land, Ford V Ferrari, Logan, and The Dial Of Destiny.

"Why should I worry" was sung by the great Billy Joel! The songs in this film are really good, just a lot of fun. I also recommend the Aristocats and Cat's Don't Dance if you like the music and animation style here.

i have such a distinct memory of one time when I was sick as a kid and I got to go with my mom to work instead of her staying home with me. that workplace had a big staff lounge with a couch and a tv, and one of the movies they had was Oliver and company. so I got to lay on the couch at mom's work and watch this movie, which to a kid around 8-10 years old was pretty cool, it's still one of my favorite childhood memories and this film holds a special place in my heart because of it

This movie breaks my heart .... I had a cat from a shelter a few years ago, she was very traumatized after years of being homeless. I eventually had to put her down, she was simply too damaged. I did everything I could for months, but ... So whenever I see a homeless cat, I always break down in tears

Trust me, I don't blame you. I lost my babies in 2017 and 2019 and no cat should be homeless, and I'm sure you gave your baby the best life she could've ever hoped for. Rest in peace and I'm so sorry. 😥🌈💔🙏

The man singing “Once Upon A Time In New York City” is Huey Lewis. He is best known as the lead singer of Huey Lewis & the News before his hearing became compromised in 2018.

One of my favourite disney movies growing up. I adored the songs & music in this and still do. The one dogs voice (Dodge) who sings "Why should i worry" is so amazing, gives me chills everytime. I miss how the disney movies/animation used to look.

This movie hits me even harder because I bought my sister this illustrated book 5 to 6 months before her adopted Cat Oliver passed away. None of us knew that he was sick until it was a month before he passed. There’s something special about orange tabby cats that gets looked over. Maybe that’s why he wasn’t taking it when he was in the box. We watch this movie a lot as kids because all we had was tv was just tapes. Thank you for reacting to this, is helped a lot with healing.

So many happy memories! The opening song is sung by Huey Lewis. He sang The Power of Love song in Back to the Future. I used to sing the Good Company song Jenny sings all around my house.
