Fun fact related to this movie: my grandfather was a surgeon, he’s retired now, and he did a lot of plastic surgery. One person that my grandfather did plastic surgery for was one of the animators for Disney’s Robin Hood! A month or so after the operation, the animator reached out to my grandfather and said “I’m so happy with the job you did, I’m going to give you one of the frames I did for Robin Hood!” Years later when my grandparents were moving, my grandfather gave the frame to my cousin where it stays to this day!

I always loved when Tuck bellows, "GET OUTTA MY CHURCH!!!" if you pause directly after the Sheriff looks quite surprised like he never expected to actually cause the Friar to legitimately lose his temper and not only scream at him but physically force him out of the building. It actually takes him a few moments to collect himself to arrest Tuck because he's so thrown off guard at this old, usually gentle friar actually attacking him.

First of all his patience got stretch before it just snapped. That man just took money out of the church's poor box. You NEVER do that! Enough was enough. I agree with Friar Tuck, GET OUT OF THE CHURCH! There's a saying "Spare the rod, spoil the child?" Well that Sheriff just got himself whooped with a big rod! For a little while. And second it's funny that Friar Tuck is a badger. Badgers are very vicious when it comes to protecting their dens.

This is the 1st version of"Robin Hood"I've ever seen.I was genuinely *shocked* when I saw a live action film and _he wasn't_ a fox!:-O (There's to notice the cartoon had been recored by my mum on a VHS but the 1st part was missing,so I had never seen the opening credit that explained every character was"played"by an animal,so I never knew they were actually _supposed_ to be humans!😅)

Very common misconception with Robin Hood: He does not steal from the rich to give to the poor. He takes what the rich stole from the poor in the first place, and gives it back to them.

Very common misconception with King Richard: He is not the good guy. He deserted his country and people to go and try to steal land from people because he followed ONE OF the religions that began there - and had his brother to tax the hell out of everyone to pay for it all (so of course it all stopped when he got back from his little bigots road trip).

Exactly. They recognized and paid their honest taxes to King Richard. The problem was that Prince John, The Sheriff of Nottingham, and Sir Hiss were unjustly raising taxes to plunder from the poor. They got rich at the common people's expense.

Prince John is another memorable disney villain. His fun to watch, the way he laughts it's funny, lots of fun interactions with Hiss and acts almost like a child when something goes wrong.

I don't know where you are from (so this might be irrelevant), but they used this film in my UK history class to show how the animators used autapomorphic animals to portray the personalities of the characters. It was one of the most effective and fun lessons I ever had in school.

Fun fact: When Lady Cluck is running through the rhinos like a quarterback, the music in the background is a combination of two college football themes: "On Wisconsin" (From the University of Wisconsin) and "Fight On" (from the University of Southern California) And that's about the closest thing to a sports fact you'll get out of me. Also, this movie is notorious for having recycled animation from past disney films, but the dancing scene is where most of it can be found. It features bits from Snow White, The Jungle Book, and The Aristocats. Still a fun scene though!

The funny thing is that the animators didn't like reusing animation, but someone higher up liked it, so they had to.

Thing is they still had to animate the characters over the animation. They just didn't have to work out motion because they had a reference. So it's like a 50% cheat. lol. But yeah, it's kinda crazy how much they took advantage of their own previous work in this film.

They were forced to reuse animation from previous films because of the small budget they had to work with, and I don’t care that it’s recycled animation, I still love that scene and this movie to this day, and it doesn’t change the fact that Robin Hood is still an amazing movie 😊 Edit: I almost missed it, and I’m sure most people have, but the scene of Sir Hiss hypnotizing Prince John is actually reused from Kaa hypnotizing Mowgli in The Jungle Book (came out in ‘67, Robin Hood came out in ‘73).

Fun fact: I think I remember a story of one of the animators who talked about how Nick wild's personality and feel from Zootopia was actually based on Robin Hood's personality and feel. I also think I heard some writers of Zootopia went even farther and said that Nick wild could be a descendant of this Robin Hood. I don't know if they were just doing fan service or how much any of this is canon.

Is true, the Zootopia team (like director Byron Howard and producer Jennifer Lee) are big fans of this Robin Hood and told that the origins of Zootopia was conversations in Disney Animation Studios about a possible sequel or continuation of this movie

Why do so many people have a problem with the reusing animation in the movie? Do people not realize how hard it was to HAND DRAW all these animation cells back then? Like, there were literally thousand of thousands of animation cells and these animators would have to draw. No technology, no computers, all HAND DRAWN. And it’s not plagiarism, these were made by the same company!! Work Smarter, Not Harder!

I don’t have a problem with reusing animation in moderation. Disney was always about taking risks and attempting to do the best work in animation. His brother was always the money man, trying and failing to rein in his excesses, because he never wanted to be lazy when it came to his animations. Reusing some animation is great for other studios. Disney was always striving to be better than that. When Walt died, they slipped. That’s not to say that this film is bad, it’s just to say that the quality slipped, and it became a continuous trend going forward all the way until the Disney Renaissance.

also, i believe during that time period Disney were doing live action movies and thus all the budget went for them, leaving not so much for the animation studio so they had to find a way to make these ones work. i read this somewhere on the internet. so if i'm wrong, please enlighten the situation. The stories don't need to be serious. The tales are very much stories of keeping hope alive in bleak times and using whatever skills you have to help your struggling community. And I like them best when that is what's at the forefront instead of some edgy retelling about Robin getting revenge on prince John.

Prince John is so quotable as a Disney villain, my family loves to quote more of this film. I think it's underappreciated, I love the intro credits, good example of walk cycles. The climax is actually one of my favorites, it gets so intense once the mission nearly fails.

I love how folksy and humble a film this is and I definitely think the story of Robin Hood is an unbeatable classic no matter what, although the 1938 one is the best version and I’d urge anyone here to check it out even if you have reservations about watching something this old. It’s just as accessible as the Wizard of Oz I’d argue, and it’s eye popping visually.

Not that agree about it with the Aristocats, actually, even though it didn't look that bad visually speaking, but the story was just very bland...for the others mentioned, you're right, especially for Jungle Book and the Fox & the Hound which were beautiful all along both for stories and pictures quality (a little less for Jungle Book though, but still ok). Robin Hood and The Sword in the Stone were downright really good for such modest budgets and for Sleeping Beauty, well...the villain and the sidekicks pretty much saved the movie by themselves, I'd say...and the songs were quite "charming" too, dare I say (like the prince, of course XD) !

I've never seen this movie in english and when Prince John started talking here, I was like 'This sounds an awful lot like Peter Ustinov'. And it is. 😂 He was such an talented actor, one of my favorite Hercule Poirot actors (right after David Suchet) and he spoke 8 languages fluently. When he played Hercule Poirot in 'Evil Under The Sun' (1982) he actually voiced himself in the german version and even made the french accent in german (he spoke german without accent normally). He was great. EDIT: Unbelievable, I just looked up who spoke Prince John in the german version (the one I grew up with) and it is again Peter Ustinov, I just never noticed 😂😂😂 but in all fairness, I haven't seen this movie in ages

@@Ahturos oh yes, I’m glad to! The dubbing is funny to me because it’s old compared to other Disney movies, but also the actors are so good because they didn’t take the job too seriously, so when they have to be goofy they go all out. An example is when Robin Hood and Little John dress up as fortune tellers, the Italian dub for little John gets so goofy when he talks as a woman and you can’t understand much of what he’s saying. Overall it’s all really good and kind of iconic, you can tell the actors had fun while dubbing the movie :)

This movie has a lot of problems. It also re-uses animation (look this up). However it isn't the worst Robin Hood made. Enjoyable characters and music mostly saves this animated classic. I give it a solid score of: 8/10 Trivia: A few months before release, the Disney animators needed Sir Peter Ustinov to come back to the Disney Studios to re-record some of his lines as Prince John. The animators made phone calls to New York City, London, Paris, Vienna, and Tokyo, trying to locate Ustinov, only to discover that he was working at the NBC Studios in Burbank that week, a half-mile down the street from them.

This was my first introduction to Robin Hood as a kid and I will forever hold this movie in heart! And after seeing other variations after this one, Robin Hood and Zorro became my heroes growing up.

Ah memories! I went to see the real little John's grave as a kid multiple times and was disappointed to find out he was only about 6ft tall (back in his day he was considered a giant) 😅😅 I was unimpressed as I expected him to be at least 7ft, definitely preferred imagining him as a bear instead. I'm a rancher, and also the frontman of a metal band who lives in the middle of nowhere. I hadn't seen this movie once since I was, oh, about 6, and I just rewatched it a couple weeks ago and fell absolutely in love with the film. As someone who's never really experienced love, Robin and Marian's love is the most perfect and beautiful love I have ever seen. I'm never, never, sad. And this movie had me in a puddle for a good week. The love scene/song is just perfect. Perfect. It really spoke to me deeply as I live in a vast, open, and empty desert, where I'll just walk, and walk, and walk for miles into the nothing letting my mind wander, and enjoying the utter silence and peace... always alone. And it got me thinking; "Wouldn't it be nice, to share my world with someone? Have someone sit next to me on my little mountain and enjoy company?" But I know that type of love expressed between Robin and Marian is very, very rare. Something only a very lucky few in this world will ever experience. Will I ever get that chance? Only time will tell. For now I'll remain in my secluded little world, far, far away from everything...

Some elements of the later part of the film would not have gone over well in real life. Mainly, the Sheriff taking the money from the church poor box. When this story is set, the Vatican had a strong influence over Europe, and as such, the church would be tax exempt, especially something that’s intended to be a charity. On that note, Prince John would have gotten in serious trouble for having Friar Tuck jailed and set to be hanged. A historical side note: John and Richard’s father, King Henry II got into trouble with the Catholic Church himself over the killing of the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket, so this would not have gone over well for Prince John. But I’m trying to breathe British history into a move where everyone is an anthropomorphized animal.

This was one of my all time favorite movies growing up! I think I still have the VHS tape and I would watch over and over again. Anything with animals and music was the perfect combination in my eyes. It drove me crazy though when I got older about Marian's relationship with King Richard because A. She's a fox and he's a lion B. Prince John doesn't seem to have a strong relationship with her the way his big brother does. She doesn't refer to him as uncle but Your Highness. He lets her live in the castle and have fun, and let's her sit by his side during the tournament, but other than that, they don't have any kind of relationship C. What exactly is her position in court? She had a lady in waiting, so she might be up there. D. What does Maiden mean? What kind of title is that for the niece of the king? Well, after doing some research tonight, I think I finally got my answer! In some versions of the Robin hood story, Marian actually has no relation to King Richard! According to what I read, Marian was an orphaned noblewoman that was taken into the care of King Richard and his court!

Now, this is one of the movies that Disney wasn't too proud of. I have always loved it, in spite of the flaws I can admit do make it kind of obvious that it wasn't given their best efforts. A lot of the animation was copied from other Disney films. The songs, though, were so fun. Prince John was one of the more clearly evil than a lot of other villains Disney has had in the past, while also being deliciously hammy, and absolutely harmless on his own. Meanwhile the sheriff is the big threat, being evil mostly because he enjoys the ability to so blatantly abuse his power and enforce his will on others. And Sir Hiss, the opportunistic evil asp, hardly a bad guy, but some that kisses up to the prince to find a position of power, the brains behind the throne in a way. All animation copying aside, the voice cast did a good job. Especially Phil Harris (Little John, also the voice of Baloo the Bear from Jungle Book). He sounded like he was having so much fun at times, and that made his scenes a lot better. They had a great cast. Of all the Disney movies I've loved over the years, this is in my top five.

@@798jeremy Due to having to recycle and reuse many older assets. During the "Phony King of England" song, many of the dances were taken from other older properties, Aristocats in particular. During the big archery contest "football" scene, Lady Cluck was basically a football player from an old Disney sports cartoon (Go to the TV Tropes page for this movie, and under, I think, the trivia tag, it lists what was reused in what scene). In modern days, part of the shame is from having spawned a generation of furries. Making anthropomorphic animal characters tends to do that, and both Robin and Maid Marion had quite a few, let's call them fans. Disney knows they roll the dice with every animated film with humanoid animal characters (Zootopia had a few theaters bought out by furries, and the commercials certainly got a few people curious), and they not only know about Rule 34, they have a policy to collect what R34 content their own employees create, so they know very well how popular such movies tend to get among certain demographics. All in all, it's one of the less loved films for the company, even if it was a very good movie that the fans enjoy, whatever their reasons (for me it's the voice acting and the songs, as well as how funny it can be).

@@lordgenerias Well...here's another way to look over : A movie's value, like any other artistic content, always depends first on the targeted audience to begin with. Once it's been released, the creator(s) (whether if it came from one or several people) can keep saying whatever they like about it, it won't change anything anymore...because their product was send to consumers that are just free to approve it or not, with different shades, more or less, as usual, and there's nothing they can do about it. Once it's done, there's no possible rewinding for that. Let's say in term of reputation, in the very least. So in the end, even though it might be interesting to hear their opinion about their own product sometimes, but overall it just doesn't matter anyway. The audience's opinion about it, on the other hand, always prevails on it, whatever the creator's opinion might be. That's job risks...or business risks, and there's no business like show business, after all, 'right ? Just part of the game. You play it, or you don't. You win, you loose, you fair play or you cheat. That's the basics. EDIT : Besides this, no big deal, we can keep discussing about the reasons we like or dislike A topic or B topic, tastes can be discussed all day long, until it gets barbaric, which would be unfortunate and it's always a shame when it happens, isn't it ?

This is such a classic. And it absolutely works as a movie for adults too. There's some dark stuff in there that kids aren't gonna pick up on and some intense moments. I think that was the genius of Walt... he found that balance where a film could work on multiple levels, across age groups, humor and story elements for both to enjoy. I love how Robin calls Maid Marian a high-born lady of quality referrring to her actual standing in society as niece to the King. She has royal blood. But when it comes down to it she is just a good, fun person. Is clearly enjoying dancing at the party with the common folk and just being herself. I've always loved that about her.

Well in fairness, the modern English accent wasn’t really a thing until the Victorian Era. So what spoke during the reign of King John/Richard wouldn’t be the same as they did in Queen Victoria’s reign or today.

This movie is great. In the phony king of England part there is recycled animation from Jungle book, Snow White and Aristocats. Robin and Maid Marian are adorable together. My favorite scene is the battle at the archery tournament. Especially Lady Kluck, she’s awesome 🦊💚Like this movie was my introduction to Robin Hood, Mickey’s Christmas carol was my introduction to A Christmas Carol.

This movie's probably a good 40% responsible for turning me into a Furry. A lot has already been said in the comments about Don Bluth's involvement in this film, but there's one thing I don't think anyone has pointed out yet. The character of Justin from Bluth's first non-Disney feature-length animation, the Secret of NIMH, shares many of the same design elements as Disney's Robin Hood, and the choreography of Justin's big sword fight is derived from the Errol Flynn Robin Hood movie. I suspect that Don wanted to use that fight in Robin Hood and was unable to for budget constraints, and came back to the idea when he was working on his own.

I love this movie! It seems like no one really talks about it, but it's so much fun to watch. You should see Robin Hood Prince of Thieves! Kevin Costner didn't really bother trying to do an English accent, but the movie is still really good. It's a lot more serious than this version, but it still has its funny moments.

I love this one and Sword In The Stone. Robin Hood only steals from the rich to give to the poor because Prince John was taxing them into starvation. If you haven't seen *Robin Hood: Men In Tights* by Mel Brooks I highly recommend it for lots of fun and laughs

There was a second ending where Robin was wounded and while they were hiding out Little John went to get medicine for him and Maid Marian stayed with him. Prince John and Sir Hiss showed up to put Robin "out of his misery" only to be stopped by Richard at the last second.
