This is a quote from the book for better understanding of feelings Katniss has as it is so confusing in the movies sometimes: ‘I know this would have happened anyway. That what I need to survive is not Gale's fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That it can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that.’

Snow's honesty was the reason why he was such a great villain. He never underestimated Katniss, he respected her as an enemy.

I really love that he's excited she's still alive after they thought they had killed them. Donald Sutherland has said in a few interviews that Snow admires Katniss and he saw her as a worthy opponent. And that his real wish was for her to turn to his side because he wants a predecessor. I also love how he's so happy to see her in the rose garden. While it feels tactless smiling while talking about Prim's death, I think he truly just can't contain his joy meeting with Katniss again because they are finally meeting as equals. He's one of my favorite villians because of the depth Donald adds.

It is strongly implied Katniss and Haymitch say yes to trick Coin and win her favor. Haymitch says yes only after Katniss did and after studying her. He was against it, and had faith Katniss did too, but because she agreed Haymitch figured she must have a plan, so he trusted in her and went with the mockingjay. Because of this Coin let her guard down. This gives Katniss a chance. She was always going to shoot Coin.
@babs3241
@babs3241 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the text in the book, after she votes "for Prim" is that she hopes Haymitch can read her mind as well as she thinks he can. She needs Coin to not be diligent about it, and to let her be armed, so she could get a clear shot. She didn't plan to survive it.
@jennv2948
@jennv2948 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe in the movie, but I don't think that's implied at all in the books. Katniss is grieving for Prim and doesn't care anymore. Let them all die. The thought doesn't even occur to her until she's on the spot.
@babs3241
@babs3241 4 жыл бұрын
@@jennv2948 I think it's more explicit on the book than in the movie, since she has that side moment of hoping Haymitch understands her vote.
@jennv2948

@@babs3241 That's just not how I interpret it at all. "Was it like this then? Seventy-five years or so ago? Did a group of people sit around and cast their votes on initiating the Hunger Games? Was there dissent? Did someone make a case for mercy that was beaten down by the calls for the deaths of the district's children? The scent of Snow's rose curls up into my nose, down into my throat, squeezing it tight with despair. All those people I loved, dead, and we are discussing the next Hunger Games in an attempt to avoid wasting life. Nothing has changed. Nothing will ever change now. I weigh my options carefully, think everything through. Keeping my eyes on the rose, I say, 'I vote Yes... For Prim.'" To be fair, I guess you can make an argument about her "weighing her options", but to me, it still seems more like despair than a plot. And then, a couple of paragraphs later, "I searched his eyes for the slightest sign of anything, fear, remorse, anger. But there is only the same look of amusement that ended our last conversation. It's as if he's speaking the words again. "Oh, my dear Miss Everdeen. I thought we had agreed not to lie to each other." He's right. We did. The point of my arrows shifts upward. I release the string. And President Coin collapses over the side of the balcony and plunges to the ground. Dead." This seems like she intended to kill President Snow until the last second, when she killed Coin instead. She had been wrestling with whether the rebels or the Capitol set off the bombs on the children and medics since she saw Snow in the greenhouse. But we always know what she's thinking, and she's never going back and forth between killing Snow vs Coin. It wasn't a plot. She decided at the last second that she believed Snow and Coin had to die.
@babs3241
@babs3241 4 жыл бұрын
@@jennv2948 It's not an advanced plot. It's just, "This is crazy." And yes, despair. She doesn't expect to live through it. But that's when she chooses to kill Coin--she can't do it unless Coin gets in range when she's armed, so she goes along, and hopes Haymitch will go along to get the majority. She doesn't have any grand plan for after the assassination, other than the nightlock pill, but she absolutely isn't saying, "Yup, I want another Games in order to avenge Prim, who would have hated it.." She's looking at Coin's face for signs of regret or any sign that she might be anything other than what Snow said, and she sees nothing. She's just given over her childhood and her innocence for the sake of replacing one sociopathic dictator for another. It's total despair. It's also directed at Coin. Snow and revenge are no longer her relevant metric.

It always gets me how symbollic Prim's death is. It's awful, but it makes sense for the story in a way. The revolution wouldn't have even happened if Katniss hadn't been so determined to save Prim's life that she volunteered to take her place in the games. But even after all that, Prim died anyway. Such a full circle moment, and I think also encapsulates the realities of war, going from only caring for and saving your loved ones to making sacrifices for the greater good. Saying that though, I stand by the fact that there was no need for Finnick to die. He deserved so much better :(

When he's fighting the mutts I keep thinking of what the Capitol advertised the Hunger Games as in that propaganda film in the first film when they called it "A pageant of honour, courage and sacrifice". In that minute when he was fighting the lizard mutts with his trident it was like watching the Roman Gladiators, and like we were watching a battle done full of honour and courage. Then again it could just be because I knew what was going to happen next. Then he threw his trident and I wanted to scream "what did you throw it for you idiot" because he might still have had a chance with it. Even though the 'symbolic' hunger games never happened, I still think Annie's vote should have counted as two votes, hers and Finnicks.

In the books the 'bread scene' was one of the most important scenes. Katniss was 11 or 12 and she'd spent the day walking around trying to sell some of Prims old threadbare baby clothes to get a few pennies to buy a bit of food for her family. They hadn't eaten for days. Katniss's father was dead and her mother was a mess. Katniss was trying but she was scared and little herself. After walking round all day in the cold and rain, no-one wanted to buy the clothes. The clothes dropped to the floor as Katniss gave up and collapsed on the muddy ground beside a tree. She had no hope left and felt close to unconsciousness. that's when Peeta threw the bread. He'd seen Katniss collapse and he baked the bread, filling it with oats, nuts and berries. As Katniss said in the book, it was good hearty bread. Then Peeta deliberately burned the bread so his mother would tell him to feed it to the pigs. Instead he tossed it to Katniss. Peeta got a beating off his mother for burning the bread. Peeta's mother was mean and would shoo the hungry District 12 kids away from the pig food if they tried to scavenge. (Peetas father was actually kind but not around in this scene) Katniss picked up the still warm bread and held it against her chest as she found the energy to get home, the bread warming her as she went. The bread saved her family from starving and gave Katniss hope. After that day she had hope and new resolve and was able to feed her family. Peeta saved her life and Prims life with that bread.

I'm always kinda torn on the book's ending vs the film's. In the book, Katniss barely survives with massive trauma and can't even bear to step outside her kitchen for months or take care of herself without help. When she finally gets children with Peeta after 15 years, she doesn't know how to begin telling them about her life which the oldest is beginning to learn about in school - her children who play on the graveyard that is District 12 unaware of the people burried there. The purpose for which she makes the list of good deeds is the days where she is nearly unable to feel any happiness at all and she feels like she's about to loose everything again. In the book, Katniss survives despite what has happened to her; in the film, she learns to live in contentment despite what's happened to her. I kinda don't know which I prefer.

I think in the books when Katniss moved in to her victor house in 12 she at first assumed that any day she would be arrested by new peacekeepers and hauled back to the capitol. There was never any promise of a pardon. The peace she had strived for was slow coming, hence the 15 years later epilogue.
@iloveyourunclebob
@iloveyourunclebob 3 жыл бұрын
@@molliebowling7029 she doesn't need a pardon in the books. Plutarch tells her on the ride back to 12 that she's been exonerated. Since she's considered to be a "hopeless, shell-shocked lunatic" the condition of her release from the hospital to 12 is phone sessions with Dr. Aurelius. She doesn't pick up the phone for a long time, but Aurelius covers for her. She wouldn't get arrested if he hadn't. She would have to go back to the hospital to be treated by him in person. I definitely do appreciate the book ending and epilogue so much more because it doesn't just brush over the effect all of this had on her and her mental state. It's a very rare thing to see in YA novels.

No matter how many times I watch this movie I always end up sobbing 😭 Finnick and Prims' deaths always break my heart because, in my opinion, they're two of the most kind-hearted characters in the series. Prim died because she was too caring & tried to save the Capital children. Finnick died trying to protect his friends (that scene always reminds me of the monkey scene in Catching Fire! Finnick holding off the mutts to protect Katniss & Peeta again). They both had bright futures. Prim as a doctor, Finnick as a husband and father. Suzanne Collins really got the tragedy of war down to a tee. War is senseless and no one is ever safe. I also love that she didnt try to pull a Harry Potter "and all was well" epilogue. Katniss and Peeta dont get to forget the war and the deaths that occurred for the sake of their freedom. They dont forget the friends they lost (including those that are still alive - like Gale). They have PTSD and survivers guilt and they deal with it realistically. They try to find the good in life no matter how difficult it may be at times. I cant wait to see your final thoughts! This movie is confusing at times if you dont have the prior knowledge of the books, but I think you've got the important parts! I'm sticking around for your Avatar reactions, so I'll anxiously wait for those too lol 😁

Prim had to die. For Katniss to truly be on Coin's side, the one thing that would firmly plant her with Coin, would be the death of Prim. Snow said he didn't think she was gunning for her sister, but on that, I call BS. Katniss voted for the Hunger Games with capital children to make sure Coin thought she was with her. And to give herself an opportunity to be able to kill Coin. She knew if Coin died, there would be no Hunger Games. And Haymitch voted with Katniss, because the two understand each other. Honestly I think this love triangle is so well done because its not a surface level which one do you just like a little more. It’s who have I grown up with but ultimately grown away from and who did I not care about at all but grown to really need. Gales obsession with vengeance led him to be a person who devalued life and in turn killed her sister because of it. He could never understand the traumas that’s she’d been through having to take people’s lives. She was never important enough to him for him put aside his need for blood. But Peeta intended to die for her multiple times. He loved her so deeply that he always did anything he could to protect her. Plus he’s the only person who could ever understand what she’s been through. The way their relationship unfolds is so organic and real, as well as the way hers and gales falls apart.

It was always going to be Katniss and Peeta. It didn't matter anyway most people in District 12 thought that Katniss and Gale were cousins. Gale couldn't volunteer because he had his family and Katniss's family to look after. Peeta and Katniss went though both games Peeta got tortured and lost his whole family, Katniss lost her sister. And as much as I hate to say it, but Prim was supposed to die in the first games all Katniss did was delay her death, it sucks but that's the reality. And it still sucked that in the end Katniss lost her mom too, because she shut down the minute they mentioned that Prim was dead. Butter cup the cat and the Primroses that Peeta planted are Katniss's only reminders of her sister.

The reason why she only brought up killing Cato and him killing Thresh is because Cato was from District 2, which she is in at that moment of the movie. It was her way of acknowledging that Cato was another victim of the Capitol and, by extension, that she doesn't consider the people of District 2 to be inherently evil, even though they supply the Capitol with Peacekeepers. She is trying to show him that they are all victims of the system.

Still she was at the front of war as a medical caretaker in the Capitol. This means that Coin must have deliberately ordered her to be in this place. Kay Tho because a lot of people only watched the first two for the games. Once it became more about the rebellion and the themes of war and trauma, people switched off. Probably because they haven't got the emotional capability of handling mature themes and are more suited for casual viewing.

You are one of the most emotionally considerate people I've ever seen react to this series. I subbed. Also a few things to help you out with the overall ending (1): it's implied that Coin intentionally sent Prim (a 13/14 year old) to the front lines as a medic so to draw Katniss in towards the second bombing, thus eliminating her as a potential political adversary. (2): Besides parenting two kids, Katniss and Peeta spent the remainder of their lives in District 12 running a newly erected medicine facility. (3): During this second rebellion, all but 7 of the 75 remaining Hunger Games victors after the third Quarter Quell were killed in what's referred to as the victors' purge. This is where both Capitol loyalists and District rebels alike killed victors for the influence they had with propaganda on each side during the war.

We all felt the same way you did about Finnick’s and Prim’s deaths. “It’s just too much.” Excellent movie series and idk if you’re the reading type, but the books do the story SO SO much better. I’d definitely recommend, thanks sm for your reactions! Also, I don’t know if you picked up on it but I don’t think Katniss ever really intended on having a final hunger games since her killing Coin for all the damage she’s done kind of confirmed there to only be peace from then on out. That ending perfectly concludes this series and the peace these characters rightfully deserve with each other. Team Peeta all the way!

The monsters at the end at Mutts. Or Mutations to give them their full name. Created in a laboratory and genetically engineered to be vicious. In the books they were whispering Katniss's name over and over and they smelled of President Snows roses. In the book, the mutts in the first movie had the eyes of the dead tributes. In the book, it was made clear that it took Katniss well over a decade to decide to have children. Unlike something similar to Marvel / DC movies, there's no buddies laughing together and minor rivalries settled. This is gruelling and harrowing all the way through. We're just lucky that, unlike some franchise movies, they managed to keep the roller-coaster of emotions that was the trilogy. It's no wonder that this was such a long reaction, you certainly went through the grinder on this one. If you ever want to know what an almighty screw-up of a potential franchise is like, read 'Vampire Academy' by Richelle Mead and then watch the film.

The shot of Katniss and Peeta sitting in the front door while raining is the same shot in the first movie when they first had a conversation after being drafted for the reaping. Also, depicting Katniss and Peeta having a normal and happy life with their two children is a nod to Effie's "life of a Victory" remarks before Katniss and Haymitch went home.

I will always love Hunger Games, it is my third favorite movie series, I just really appreciate and respect the movies. I’ve always wished to have seen/ at least know how many of the main characters adapted to their lives after the games/ chaos, I mainly wish that for Johanna, she had a lot to deal with like her family being killed and being tortured like many of the other tributes, but I wish we could know what happens to her after Snows death... I truly respect her and love her. I also wish to know basically the same for Annie, Haymitch, etc. All their lives are basically in shambles and it’s hard for all of them to recover. And I just wish we could get a show for all the previous games, and have like what I said as a show or a movie. I want to have a show for all tributes experiences and views on winning the games, to see what happens in their lives after those games. Basically there is so much to that world and so many questions that we still don’t have answers for or truly know about. Hunger Games is messed up and emotional, but you want to learn from them and see how they are. I always think about that and it just makes me sad. But yes, Hunger Games is 11/10. I am a huge fan of the franchise and will always adore it.

The scene with the cat it's the one scene in the book that really broke me down. It's said since the first book that she hated the cat and the cat hated her, but in that scene they are both griefing Prim's death and finding comfort in each other since the only bond was their love for Prim. This one scene can say a lot about this saga and the war in general, you may won a war but the consequence still be there after it all, so who won really?

The books do an excellent job showing just how broken she was at the end after Prim’s death and all the way to the end of the book. She was kept isolated for months during her trial for killing Coin and then was shipped off to Distict 12 where she spent almost a year alone with only a caretaker. She was just a shell of a person and it was sooo heartbreaking to read but so well written. She and Peeta struggled with PTSD for years, maybe their whole lives. It also shows their attempts at healing, even Haymitch, which I loved. I also feel like the movies played up the love triangle. In the books, especially the last one, she was angry that anybody would think which boy she liked was of any importance in the world they lived in and the war that was happening.

And oh god, Finnick 💔😭 he's one of my favourites along with Katniss and Peeta. I don't ever watch his death scene, because just no. Katniss and Finnicks friendship is fleshed out a lot more in the books. They were really good friends but he still became such a beloved character in the films, and even though his character wasn't as developed as it could have been it just shows how amazing his character was because everyone pretty much calls out the unjustice of his death. I like how you mentioned this film has so many epic unpredictable twists and turns because it's hard to guess what Katniss is thinking. That's interesting because it's the complete opposite in the books which are written entirely from the perspective of Katniss in first person narration. So you can't at all avoid what she's really thinking or what motivates her. Her true intentions are revealed by her inner monologue even if she's outwardly being disingenuous to people around her. The reader isn't privy to anything Katniss doesn't know or can't see, or information she's ignorant of, which is why for example we didn't see the rebels take the mansion. Because Katniss was unconscious for it, and didn't care to brush up on the details after the fact because she was so devastated and traumatized by Prim's death. While I do love how the objective plot is largely loyal to the source material, the choice to present the story from a first person limited perspective was very well done.

Gale helped make the bombs that were used to kill the capital children. So he knew that it was part of the plan. Even if the bombs hadn't killed Prim , I don't believe Katniss would have forgiven him for it.

tbh reading the last book was really hard. from beginning katnis is already broken from loosing peeta to capital during QQ and constantly depending on drug to hang on. and it keep go on and on until we got peeta back. when she find out peeta lost his love for her katniss was already suicidal. she so determine to kill snow in suicide mission. but when prim die she was burned badly n living like a zombie, hiding from one spot to another and her only last ounch of living was to see snow die. the movies didnt show but actually after she shoot coin with her arrow and failed on her attempt to kill herself katnis is basically turning insane . she try to find every little thing around her that can allow her to die. from her utensil to her bedding to her clothes just so she can end her life. it was really dark and hard to read em that they have to lock her in her room and slowly cutting her drug intake . it takes awhile before they finally release her n send her back to district 12 where there she continue struggling just to stay alive. she cant step out of her room or feed herself that there is people assign there to help her take care herself.

It breaks my heart to hear Peeta say "I'm a mutt". It was the ONE THING he didn't want. He didn't want the Capitol to change him, he wanted to stay himself. The boy with the bread who would take a beating for a girl he loved. The boy who would give his life for her. The boy who was just... nice....

Honestly I haven't seen the movies for a looong time. The books I haven't read in decades but her speech at the end "to end all wars" - kinda figured Katniss would fire the arrow at her.... dead give away lol

I love how President Snow starts out as someone that's fun to hate but is revealed to be a practical man trying to hold a nation together best he can. He's awful but I wouldn't say he's evil, at least not evil for the sake of being evil. I love how he dies laughing, enjoying the triumph of his old friend, Katniss

OK, about Gale when he was suggesting the plan. He is a man in deep distress. He fought to save people from his home district only to watch 90% of them burn alive. He is done with the system and he is done being a "nice guy" - he goes in all guns blazing. I get his anger. I think, despite how bad it really is, I would be like him in similar situation - I would lose track a bit and give in to the chase, the fight and all that goes with it. Of course, a person can not remain as they were when that final line is crossed - some lines you can't uncross. I feel for Gale :(

I don't like how they handled the scenes immediately after Coin's death: in the book, Katniss is taken to her old tribute apartment where she breaks down emotionally, all alone and wanting to die. It was written so well that I had to stop reading as I felt that I had broken with her! And I sooo wanted to see that see how they adapted this very scene in the film, with Katniss in the apartment for days until she spontanously starts to sing as there is no other voice she can hear...

In the book there’s more detail about how Katniss and Prim’s cat didn’t get along. So the part at the end where she’s saying she’s not coming back she’s gone, and they sort of bond that’s heart wrenching

I've started watching the hunger games again after all these years (i was obsessed when it came out) and now that i'm older this franchise seems so much deeper. I don't think i could watch another person react to those movies. You truly understood what the characters were going through, and how trauma affects their life. Peeta's the kind of character we need more in movies, a man who's good, and who lets the woman he loves protect him while he does the same for her, and he's never afraid to show his emotions. You never diminished that or any of Katniss' confusion towards being the mockingjay, you also really listened to Finnick's speech and tried to imagine what he must have been going through. Those are just examples but I want to thank you for that, for paying attention to the details and for allowing yourself to really be emotional.

Yep. Coin sent those bombs in. Those bombs were the very ones made in district 13. That’s the reason she let Prim have that job. And when those first bombs went off, she knew Katniss would run in there. She was trying to get rid of her

Great reaction. I am actually very impressed at all you pick up just from the film itself having never read the books. You caught on to Coin super quick. The whole series, but especially this last one is an absolutely devastating statement on the consequences of war. The author wrote a series of middle school age kids books also with the intention of teaching about war to that age group. Also good.

I liked when katniss spoke to the guy from district 2 and said: "....That's why I killed Kato and he killed Tesh..." and that is what it happened in the book because in the movie, tresh was killed by the mutts. Great video reaction! Ps: sorry if my english is awful, I'm forgetting it.

WOW!!! I don't even know where to start!!! I haven't watched those movies in a while! I know how you feel confused for most of the movie but I think that is exactly what the director wants you to feel and a symbol to Katniss not really knowing whats going on. Thank you for trying these movies out because I have loved watching them again with you. It has truly been amazing watching you get better at becoming a reactor. Per your specific stuff, 1) When you asked what those things were in the sewer system I always thought that they looked like inferi from HP. 2) As I said before when you ask "What is going on?" You are absolutely correct in the fact that every thing is confusing because it is supposed to be confusing 3) I think Katniss chose to have the Hunger Games with the tributes from the capitol because Coin was RIGHT about the fact that the people (Katniss) couldn't make a smart decision when their brains are addled and 4) Kind of adding onto that, a lot of people think that Coin was actually behind the attack on the kids KNOWING that Prim would go in there to make Katniss' mind messed up so she could get her way/ to get Katniss out of the polls. (Which Coin did effectively, but not the way she wanted.) Anyways, thank you for deciding to do this series because I had a great time and I hope you did too!

Sorry for writing so damn much but I just wanted to say that you are at that point as a youtuber that people start to get jealous. I was just reading through the comments and there are certain people that try to be a jerk to you because you miss one detail or they can’t see.
