Thanks! I've watched hundreds of these reactions to these movies, and it's a rare treat to see one where people have a proper appreciation for them. I love how you let yourselves be drawn into the wonder of the story. I can never see them again for the first time, but I can experience the excitement through you. It is a gift.

I've seen many LOTR reactions, and this is one of the best, but not because it pleased me on the same moments I was expecting to be pleased, but because it is a very honyest, non-cynical reaction, both allowed themselves to get carried by every detail of the movie, instead of missing the key moments by engaging into endless monologues (pretending to be "smart" or entertaining). This is great so far, I will soon watch their reaction for The Return of The King.

19:45 apparently, Ian McKellen (Gandalf) imitated Christopher Lee (Saruman)'s speaking voice in that scene, while Lee imitated Gandalf, and both of their dialogues were overlaid on top of each other. That's why he briefly sounded like Saruman 25:35 Sauron did something worse: he burnt the Entwives' gardens a few thousand years ago during his wars. It's unknown if any Entwife survived the massacre. 1:15:20 if you remember in Fellowship of the Ring, Saruman made fun of Gandalf's smoking habits yet we find here that he has tubs full of pipeweed in his own basement lol

At 47:05, this scene with Faramir, Boromir, and their father Denethor is the primary reason Tolkien nerds prefer the Extended version of the movie to the Theatrical version. This scene was omitted from the Theatrical release, but it shouldn't have been.
@Makkaru112
@Makkaru112 7 ай бұрын
Let me clarify. Peter Jackson wanted people to see the extended (uncut) versions in the theatres, but Harvey Weinstein stopped him. In fact, Harvey wanted just ONE movie in the threatres, not a trilogy. 5 years of court proceedings - and the 'harvey weinstein orc" in return of the king (made at Jackson's specific direction) was the result. Too many people don’t realize they are arguing in favour of a version of this movies that was only shown in theatres because of legal reasons - not for artistic reasons. - Peter Jackson’s passion project team was forced to not show their full content as it would cut into what the cinema CEOs literally called the theatrical edition to get more screen time in and more mulla for themselves. It’s a such a nasty business. 80 percent true that money be the root of all evil. It’s the reason the real pumped out the EE as fast as possible in DVD format before the second and third film hit theatres to get back at Harvey Weinstein, again, they wanted people to see the whole movie which invites feelings of completion in one’s heart. But he just announced that’s he found 1300 hours worth of footage from a warehouse he finally got access to so we will see more specially made super extended edition cinema extravaganzas that no cinema would pass on the opportunity to ride on his coattails again. The EE wasn’t just for fans. He literally was adapting the books to film as honestly as possible. the DVD documentaries showed that they didn’t want to cut anything. And weaselled around things to create the EE. (EE is extended edition by the way! ❤️). Without the extended for the next two films I always say “Good luck missing the Boromir backstory. Good luck explaining why the cloak turns into a rock. Good luck explaining the elves that had explained their current situation since the first film. It all ties together good luck skipping the gift scene with Galadriel and Celeborn and the extra scenes between Aragorn and Celeborn & Galadriel to Aragorn!” It’s seriously needed for the film worldbuilding and heightening the stakes. Also, I’d rather have faith people have the emotional and intellectual IQ high enoug to understand it or shall we have changed the title to something else same as how JK was forced to change the title in America to sorcerers stone instead of PHILOSPHER as Americans don’t even know what a Philospher is anymore these days which is sad. Relating to that: Tolkien was very sad about people losing connection to their past and heritage etc!

Now that we see Gandalf back, I’ll follow up on a previous comment about the 3 Elf rings we saw in the very beginning of the first movie. No spoilers, as these facts are not mentioned in the movies. So Galadriel has one elf ring - we saw her as the very first person seen in the first movie intro. Elrond has the 2nd elf ring - he inherited it from the former High King of Elves, Gil-Galad, who is also depicted in that intro (not shown but Gil-Galad was killed attacking Sauron). Finally the 3rd elf ring is warn by … Gandalf. It originally was given to an ancient Elf leader named Cirdan, who lives on the coast. When Gandalf arrived to Middle Earth by ship on his mission, Cirdan recognized he was a solid dude and gave Gandalf the ring to aid him in his efforts. Gandalf’s ring is called the Ring of Fire and that might actually explain his talent for fireworks, starting fires, and creating illumination like in Moria.

@@wadumin I tried giving you the extended info on this with added context but I don’t know if you seen it. Here. - The 3 Elven Rings are not susceptible to “The One Ring” in any direct way.. They’re only tied by fate to lose their power if Sauron is defeated completely & absolutely. As they were made by the elves and as always they make things for a purpose and pour their literal spirit into things they create. So if Sauron is defeated then the three rings power will fade and basically become almost useless or diminished versions of their original design since by this era magic has bled from the world by a huge degree thanks to Morgoth’s poisoning the world itself with his very essence that he poured into it. Called The Long Defeat By The Elves and The Men Of The West. Firstly: All 16 rings were meant to go to the elves ( which lead to 300-500years of his infiltration & deception down the drain.) but Mairon of the Maiar(primordial angelic beings in simple terms as they are sort of beyond angels) disguised as a high elf named Annatar when he came to the elves pretending to be an emissary from Valinor on behalf of the Valar so it makes sense how alluring the ring is and how strong it’s pull on people is. (A bit too instant in the movies though) Galadriel soon saw right through him and especially when after speaking with him regarding not remembering him when in Valinor long ago where she learned from all the Valar thanks to being dominantly Vanyar/Teleri side over her Noldorin side where she gleaned from that encounter that she did not study under Aulë the Vala with any elf named Annatar ! But later named Sauron by the elves meaning deceiver! After all of this, The three elven rings were made in secret without Saurons touch upon them thanks to Celebrimbor! Remember Gandalf before he became Gandalf was the same species of entity Sauron used to be!! Wow hey? The Rings in this case, would have lost their powers eventually due to the lack of the One Ring and possibly because they were designed to defeat evil, & evil in the form of Sauron had been defeated twice already in the past. The Three Elven Rings served their purpose for a long time. Two out of three of them had several different bearers Unlike the other Rings, the main purpose of the Three is to "heal and preserve", as when Galadriel used Nenya to preserve her realm of Lothlórien over long periods. The Elves made the Three Rings to try to halt the passage of time, or as Tolkien had Elrond say, "to preserve all things unstained". I can expand upon this based on any further statements & questions you have for me as a reply to this comment ! ❤ There is problem here with the Rings, the Three were supposed to be never touched by Sauron and that's why they were not corrupting…Sauron had not taken part in their making which made the Three more 'pure' unsullied by his dark power, unlike the Nine and Seven Rings! But Sauron in the show touched the very material they were made of!!! So technically he could have tainted them and corrupted! Even appendices of Lot tell us the order of making the rings, so they didn't even need the righs to more detailed writings in UT or Silmarillion: 1200 Sauron endeavours to seduce the Eldar. Gil-galad refuses to treat with him; but the smiths of Eregion are won over. The Númenoreans begin to make permanent havens. c. 1500 The Elven-smiths instructed by Sauron reach the height of their skill. They begin the forging of the Rings of Power. c. 1590 The Three Rings are completed in Eregion. c. 1600 Sauron forges the One Ring in Orodruin. He completes the Barad-dûr. Kelebrimbor perceives the designs of Sauron. 1693 War of the Elves & Sauron begins. The Three Rings are hidden." 'Did you not hear me, Gloin?' said Elrond. 'The Three were not made by Sauron, nor did he ever touch them. But of them it is not permitted to speak. So much only in this hour of doubt I may now say. They are not idle. But they were not made as weapons of war or conquest: that is not their power. Those who made them did not desire strength or domination or hoarded wealth, but understanding, making, and healing, to preserve all things unstained. These things the Elves of Middle-earth have in some measure gained, though with sorrow. But all that has been wrought by those who wield the Three will turn to their undoing, and their minds and hearts will become revealed to Sauron, if he regains the One.

Well, what they really couldn't transpose in the movies are the songs, from "the cow jumped over the moon" to the song of Luthien the book is packed full of beautiful lyrics whose melody you have to make up with your imagination while you go along. In the movies they managed to throw in just "the Road goes ever on" and a couple of Sindar (elvish) ones that ended up to blend with the music score, but while you read and Tom Bombadil jumps out of the trees singing his nonsense songs you just can't help but smile and hum along. When Gandalf says, "Or rather Saruman as he should have been" he's referring to his (for a lack of better terms right now) new clothes, being clad in white. Him and Saruman are 2 of the 5 wizards, or Istari who were sent by the Valar (Middle Earth's Gods) to try to unite the world against Sauron. Saruman was the head of the order which correlates with the color in his title 'Saruman the White'. Of course Saruman abandoned their mission for personal gain, but again when they were sent he was their leader. But after Gandalf defeats the Balrog and dies, he's sent back to Middle Earth as the new leader of the Istari. So before where Saruman was more powerful than Gandalf, now they're on much more equal footing. In fact Gandalf is probably stronger. But that's what Gandalf meant, and that's why new Gandalf is known as "Gandalf the White". He basically got a mega power upgrade. Also in the books and I think in the canon of the movies as well, Gandalf the White went to Lothlorien when he came back to Middle Earth before finding the Three Hunters, and Galadriel gave him his new staff.

Gandalf the Grey was always stronger than Saruman. Saruman only bested him previously for 2 reasons - the element of surprise and Gandalf was essentially unwilling to fight Saruman. Gandalf was humble and did not believe he could best Sauron or Saruman. When he comes back to life he has both the authority that was previously given to Saruman (and those sorts of things are important) and he also has some of the limits removed. Bearing in mind these limits are his own limits based on the "rules" of the wizards going to middle earth. Gandalf basically allows himself greater use of his powers upon his return as he now has to fill the role of several wizards.

This is what I've always felt about Gollum. Gollum (or Smeagol) is the ultimate embodiment of addiction. He's addicted to the One Ring like someone who's on cocaine or heroin. Remember that Gandalf said that Gollum would never be rid of his need for the Ring. The desire never truly leaves them. You can try to help them recover, you can try to remove their addiction, but an addict will quit when they decide to quit and not a moment sooner. Frodo and Sam represent the two viewpoints that society tends to have towards people battling addiction. Frodo acted towards him like the kind of person who tries to help an addict overcome their addiction while Sam was more like those who feel it's just a matter of time before they fall back into their addiction again.

The instrument you may be loving a lot isn’t a violin! It’s a Nordic instrument called the Hardanger fiddle! (Norwegian: hardingfele) is a traditional stringed instrument considered to be the national instrument of Norway. In modern designs, this type of fiddle is very similar to the violin, though with eight or nine strings (rather than four as on a standard violin) and thinner wood. The F-holes of the Hardanger fiddle are distinctive, oftentimes with a more “sunken” appearance, and generally straighter edges (unlike the frilly, swirly F-holes of a violin). Four of the strings are strung and played like a violin, while the rest, named understrings or sympathetic strings, resonate under the influence of the other four. These extra strings are tuned and secured with extra pegs at the top of the scroll, effectively doubling the length of a Hardingfele scroll when compared to a violin. The sympathetic strings, once fastened to their pegs, are funneled through a “hollow” constructed fingerboard, which is built differently than a violin’s, being slightly higher and thicker to allow for these extra strings. The resonant strings lay on the center of the special bridge, attached to extra hooks (or fine-tuners) on the tailpiece. Carved out within the center of the bridge is a smaller secondary “bridge”, or opening, designed specifically for these resonant strings to pass through. This is where the resonance is picked up & reverberated; as notes are played, the vibrations are sent through the bridge, where the sympathetics echo those notes. • The Hardingfele’s bridge is unique compared to other bowed instruments. It is somewhat taller and wider, resulting in the strings being slightly lower and farther apart; this allows for the easy execution of double-stops (playing of two strings at once). A similar technique is seen in some American old-time and bluegrass fiddlers, who intentionally move their bridge back a few millimetres closer to the tailpiece, for better double-stops. The hardingfele is used mainly in the southwest part of Norway, whereas the ordinary violin (called flatfele, 'flat fiddle', or vanlig fele, 'common fiddle') is found elsewhere. The hardingfele is used for dancing, accompanied by rhythmic loud foot stomping. It was also traditional for the fiddler to lead the bridal procession to the church. The instrument is often highly decorated, with a carved animal (usually a dragon or the Lion of Norway) or a carved woman's head as part of the scroll at the top of the pegbox, extensive mother of pearl inlay on the tailpiece and fingerboard, and black ink decorations called 'rosing' on the body of the instrument. Sometimes pieces of bone are used to decorate the pegs and the edges of the instrument. The earliest known example of the hardingfele is from 1651, made by Ole Jonsen Jaastad in Hardanger, Norway. Originally, the instrument had a rounder, narrower body. Around the year 1850, the modern layout with a body much like the violin became the norm. considered to be the national instrument of Norway. In modern designs, this type of fiddle is very similar to the violin, though with eight or nine strings (rather than four as on a standard violin) and thinner wood. Proud Norwegian here. This makes me so happy to have such an ancient and magical instrument immortalized in these movies. ❤ many covers of songs are done in with these such instruments too which is also pretty awesome.

The movies changed Faramir's character significantly, for dramatic affect, I suppose. In the Books, he never planned to take the Ring to Gondor. In fact, here is his response when he found Frodo carried the One Ring (And it was Sam who accidentally spilled the beans, not Gollum.): *"Alas for Boromir! It was too sore a trial!" he said. "How you have increased my sorrow, you two strange wanderers from a far country, bearing the peril of Men! But you are less judges of Men than I of Halflings. We are truth-speakers, we men of Gondor. We boast seldom, and then perform, or die in the attempt. Not if I found it on the highway would I take it I said. Even if I were such a man as to desire this thing, and even though I knew not clearly what this thing was when I spoke, still I should take those words as a vow, and be held by them. But I am not such a man. Or I am wise enough to know that there are some perils from which a man must flee. Sit at peace! And be comforted, Samwise. If you seem to have stumbled, think that it was fated to be so. Your heart is shrewd as well as faithful, and saw clearer than your eyes. For strange though it may seem, it was safe to declare this to me. It may even help the master that you love. It shall turn to his good, if it is in my power. So be comforted. But do not even name this thing again aloud. Once is enough."*

I think it was for more than just dramatic effect. The producers made an artistic choice to make the ring more self-driven and powerful than in the books. For Faramir to decide, without a struggle, to just ignore the ring would not be consistent with the movie Ring.

1:00:13 Fun fact! The Sun is actually a lesser godlike being named Arien, I believe. She was a Maia (a lesser angelic being) just like Gandalf and other Wizards. Maiar are servants of greater angelic beings called Valar. When Arda (the world) was young, Morgoth (Sauron's master and original evil) destroyed two trees that gave light to the world and Valar were able to save only a fruit of the golden tree and a single flower of the silver tree. Valar ordered Arien and Tilion (also a Maia) to take the fruit and the flower into the sky thus creating the Sun and the Moon. Arien is the Guardian of the Sun and Tilion is the Guardian of the Moon. Because of that Sun is referred as her and Moon is referred as he. So yeah, the Sun is canonically on the side of good

(Epic lembas bread history. It’s not just bread.) - written by Pengolodh. Lembas was made first by the Vala named Yavanna from special corn that grew in Aman, and Oromë gave it to the Elves for the purpose of the Great Journey. For this reason, it was an Elven custom that only women should make lembas; they were called Yavannildi who knew the secret of its recipe from Oromë. Also, the custom mandated that only an Elven Queen should keep and distribute the lembas; for this reason she was called also massánië or besain. - Only on rare occasions was it given to non-Elves, because it was believed that mortals who ate it would become weary of their mortality and would desire to live among the Elves. The corn was an enduring plant that needed but a little sunlight to ripen and could be sown at any season and then sprouted and grew swiftly. Yet it was harmed by north winds, while Morgoth dwelt there. The Eldar grew it in guarded lands and sunlit glades. The ears were harvested without scythe or sickle but each one was gathered by hand, and the white stalks were drawn from the earth and used to weave baskets in which the grain was stored. Melian, as the queen of Doriath, was one who held the recipe from Yavanna. By giving lembas to Beleg for Túrin, Melian showed him great favour because it had never before been given to Men and seldom was again. Later it was passed to Galadriel and other Elves. When ships had been sent forth, at the behest of Turgon, towards the West, its mariners carried a sealed wallet with waybread for their voyage. Voronwë, after surviving the wreck, shared it with Tuor throughout their journey to Gondolin. Dúnedain, inspired by the elves, made a similar kind of waybread (although it was not true lembas), that they carried on long journeys. So each of Isildur's soldiers on their way north from the War of the Last Alliance "carried in a sealed wallet on his belt a small phial of cordial and wafers of a waybread that would sustain life in him for many days". The Galadhrim had a large store of lembas in Lothlórien. Galadriel gave some of it to the Fellowship of the Ring upon their departure. Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee subsisted on it through the majority of their journey from there into Mordor. The tradition of farming the Western Corn and the making of waybread was lost for ever in Middle-earth after the departure of Galadriel and the death of Arwen. One of the only places left where this untouched holy wheat can be grown is the groves within Lothlórien.

Acccording to Tolkien, who was of course Catholic, the Lembas in some ways repersented the Host. the bread to the Eucharest. That's why Gollum couldn't eat it- because in Catholic tradition only those who have confessed their sins and been shriven can eat it.

Around 54:34 of this video, you start to hear soft vocals in the background. They are singing in Old English (spoken roughly AD500-1100), which was the language Tolkien gave Rohan instead of inventing a new one for them. They are singing lines from an Old English poem ("The Wanderer") which King Theoden paraphrases here: Where is the horse and the rider? etc. Also, Theoden is an Old English word for "king".

Lovely reaction - I grew up reading Tolkien and watching the early cartoon versions - then when these films came out, it felt like I'd been waiting for them from childhood - remember, they were released a year apart - so this feels like a whole chapter in our lives when all of us were waiting breathlessly for the next film - I think Tolkien wanted to do something like Ferdowsi - use his work to reclaim his country's mythic past - but Ferdowsi wove the ancient legends into his new narrative, like Virgil - Tolkien did something else - he was a classical linguist and philologist deeply steeped in medieval lore - I think he believed England had been somehow denied its mythic heritage, because foreign conquest, from France in particular, had superimposed the traditions of Continental Europe onto the local culture - I think he somehow wanted to re-imagine a heritage that might have been - he had also adapted versions of Beowulf and Arthur, but for his Middle Earth project, instead of drawing directly from this material, he chose to weave his own personal universe out of his imagination, and saturate it in a kind of synthetic lore that he'd created himself - he'd had extensive scholarly training from Oxford, and he drew upon these methods to grow his own reality directly out of his mind, and give this world-building a kind of 3-dimensional richness and detail, as if this were an actual land whose legendary history he were mining, like an archaeologist - in this way I think he was a kind of pioneer of genre fantasy, in the modern, "fictional" sense, in contrast to the kind of mythic lore we see in figures like Virgil, Ferdowsi, Dante, Milton, or even a contemporary like TH White - these figures are building layers of real heritage, that are then written into their cultural narrative - Tolkien emulated these forms, but in a way that he'd entirely invented himself - tho if you look at Tolkien's Silmarillion, which is like his Bible of Middle Earth - you can see in a way he's mixing Milton with Greek and Norse mythology, but in a very original way - an article in Wired magazine said that Tolkien in a way had invented virtual reality - inviting the reader into an experience where we aren't just following a story, but we show up to lose ourselves in what feels like an infinite parallel universe

You're right... Aragorn has an awesome backstory. In the books his father was killed by orcs when he was a young kid (3 i believe). His mother took him to Rivendell where he was raised in the house of Elrond. They did not tell him about his heritage while he was young because they wanted him to be a kid for a while. When he matured, he traveled with Elrond's twin sons Elodan and Elrohir where they taught him most of his woodcraft. He met arwen in rivendell as an adult and immediately thought she was a reincarnation of Luthien who was thought to be the most beautiful being ever created (and, as it was... an ancestor of both of them). Elrond told him that he could not court arwen until he bacame king. Aragorn then traveled middle earth trying to foil the plans of sauron and help humans but he traveled under a fake name.

25:32 Entwives loved gardens more than forests, they had their gardens at the East of Anduin (the big river). Back in the War of Last Alliance, Sauron's armies retreated through those lands to Mordor and burnt everything (those lands are now known as Brown Lands because nothing grows there). It was when Entwives were lost. No one knows if they died, fled or were captured and enslaved by Sauron

Treebeard(Fangorn) - In the Silmarillion, at the end of the chapter "Of Aule and Yavanna", Manwë states, "But in the forests shall walk the Shepherds of the Trees." This is before the chapter, 'Of the Coming of the Elves'. So, since Treebeard is one of the first three, he is beyond cool. And he is around before the elves arrive in Valinor. However, do not be deceived! The elves taught the Ents speech, even though they were around before. It is often mistaken that ents are trees or were once trees, when they are in fact are a sort of 4th children of Îlluvatar (AllFather) a creation of the Vala named Yavannah Treebeard refers to the elves "started it, teaching the trees to talk" or some such thing. He also refers to the elves curing the ent's "dumbness". People assume the two events are one and the same, when they are not. Obviously, Tolkien meant to be vague and allow the reader to decide what they looked like and just how ent-like huorns could become and how tree-like ents could become. But it is clear they are in the long lists of animals alongside men and harts and bears, etc., not plants. - - Gandalf tells Thèoden that when he meets Treebeard he will be meeting the oldest thing that ever walked. Which is another indication that the ents were around, shepherding the trees, before the elves got to Middle-earth. Tolkien meant to be vague. After all, Celeborn and Galadriel hail Treebeard as "Eldest" when they meet him in LOTR. However, when Treebeard is reciting the poem of the different being, he calls the elves the "eldest of all". - So who do we believe? Gandalf? Remember: Treebeard was in middle earth before even Galadriel entered there during the zenith years of Arda and of the elves and even the early mighty dawn of men when they came upon the scene. • Celeborn is said by his wife Galadriel to be the wisest of elves left in Middle-earth especially due to the fact he was a close kinsman family member of Elu Thingol Of Doriath (of which Elwë[Thingol] was Galadriel’s grandfathers closest friend and literal brother. The only. To there to stay in middle earth) Galadriel is certainly one of the oldest, she came over with the very first migration to middle earth, but Celeborn may not be as old as she is. People who go in for the rough drafts of Tolkien's creative process have noted that he first appears in the house of Thingol Graycloak long after the elves came to Middle-earth. But the ents were here when the elves arrived. The Elves are the eldest race of Elves, Men and Dwarves. The Hobbits were not included in the mythology and neither were the Ents. This does not necessarily mean the Ents are actually older than the Elves, just that they were here before the Elves got here. Fangorn is the oldest living being in the world; and is the personification of nature of the world. But the undying lands where the Elves originated were removed from the Circles of the World. However, the author does imply Fangorn is older than either Celeborn or Galadriel, because Gandalf claims he is the oldest living thing in Middle-earth and the two elves themselves address him as "Eldest". A couple other things to consider, from Hammond and Scull: in an unpublished draft letter of late 1968, now in a private collection, Tolkien wrote: 'Eldest was the courtesy title of Treebeard as the oldest surviving Ent. The Ents claimed to be the oldest ’speaking people’ after the Elves [illegible] until taught the art of speech by the Elves...They were therefore placed after the dwarves in the Old List...since Dwarves had the power of speech from their awaking’ “The Lord of the Rings, A Reader’s Companion” Hammond and Scull, page 382 Treebeard: Entry 464 The Ent And on page 499, while explaining Tolkien describing both Treebeard and Bombadil as ’eldest’, Hammond and Scull note: ’...it is worth repeating Christopher Tolkien’s comment that his father was given to ’rhetorical superlatives’, such as ’the oldest living thing’.

38:04 a teasing glimpse into some deep lore, the tip of the tip of the iceberg. Eowyn recognizes Aragorn as a long-lived Dunedain. That word means he’s descended from the ancient island kingdom of Numenor - kind of a cross between the Roman Empire and Atlantis. In time Numenor became corrupted by Sauron and was destroyed. But a group of uncorrupted good guys survived and founded 2 affiliated Kingdoms on the mainland - Gondor in the South, and Arnor in the North where the Shire and Bree are. The leader of those surviving Numenorians was Elendil, Isildur’s father (killed by Sauron in the battle in the Intro to FOTR). Arnor eventually fell apart, but its descendants are Aragorn and his posse of surviving Dunedain, aka the Rangers of the North (the book actually does feature other rangers as minor side characters). A trait of Numenorians was a very long life - centuries-long among the ruling family. That’s wearing off but 87-year-old Aragorn, a direct descendent of the original King of Numenor, can expect another 120 years or so if he’s not killed first.
@Big_Tex
@Big_Tex 8 ай бұрын
And the comments about “There are few of us left” and making babies. 1. The Dunedain have dwindled partly because they’re in hiding and can’t just live openly in a settled community to expand. 2. But also, the RACE of Dunedain is thinning out because there simply are not enough full-blooded Numenor descendants for sufficient marriage without genetic inbreeding! They necessarily have to mate with non-Dunedain a lot, something that’s been going on for thousands of years, which necessarily thins out the Numenor bloodline further. 3. And finally, they live a life of combat and violence against the forces of Sauron, so you can figure that a lot of Dunadain have been killed over the centuries before producing babies.

Galadriel is the one who pleaded the WindLord Gwaihir, one of the eagle formed Maiar), to go to the top of Durin’s Tower at Zirakzigil. He was recuperated by her own hand and skills. Bringing back a god of sorts is quite a feat which fits her prowess in several fields as she was known to have learned from all of the Valar, all that there was left to teach by each of them. The staff was given to him by Galadriel in Lothlórien and enhanced his powers upon his return. His old brown staff was a gift from Radagast (another wizard of the Istari Order after he escaped from Saruman’s current abode in Orthanc, hand carved from an old branch. The white staff was a gift from Galadriel, made by elven smiths from Mallorn wood. (Mallanornë by the elves. Interestingly looks similar to the elvish word for Friend, Mellon. But that’s just me being inquisitive.) That new staff before he sacrificed it to do a spell of sorts against the Balrog in Khazad-Dûm. That one was called Opening Flower. (His portrayal in The Hobbit movies are a little bit funny but it slightly sort of suits the aspect of that book which was more whimsical so I guess they wanted to make him act much different. Granted Radagast sort of strayed from the path but his main mission was to guard and protect nature itself on behalf of Yavannah. The Valar that chose him as her champion to head into middle earth with the other 4 istari. The white staff was most likely named something along the lines of Marta Nieninquë (Fated WhiteTearSnowflower), or Ninquelotë which is “White/snow Flower”. Or Ninquë Merillë “White Rose”. (Derivatives of Merillë is also Feast and Festive, think of his fireworks for example. Single rose is Meril or like single flower is Elloth. Another Elvish flower term is “ninglor” noun for golden water-flower, gladden. But since Mithrandir is his name by the elves for grey wanderer I wanted to add Mithril to the name of his new staff as it contains similarity to his elvish name so “Mithrillottë” meaning “Flower Of TrueSilver” Or maybe due to the snowy mountain he died upon, the new staff name could be “Olórin olea Ollosë” meaning “The Dream/Vision that bloomed and flourishes upon the Fallen Snow” by how it’s implied. Olórin is Gandalf’s real angelic name so it is basically describing how the dream of hope that rekindled itself in the harshest of conditions. Like a resilient type of flower, Ollosë is the fallen snow. Olea is the action of plants specifically growing & living. Another elvish flower name I love is for Daisy “Eirien”. Lothlórien itself means “DreamFlower”. Galadriel’s realm. ❤️ - (Elvish had grown ALOT over the ages. Even some forms of elvish are even more archaic even for other elves who at times may experience a little bit of difficulty understanding or simply noting one’s accent and speed of which one talks internally.

Fun Fact: John Rhys-Davies, who played Gimli & the voice of Treebeard, was actually among the tallest of all cast members. As Gimli was one of the shortest characters, even shorter than many of his fellow dwarves, shooting John Rhys-Davies' scenes was particularly tricky, especially since he spent the majority of his scenes alongside Orlando Bloom & Viggo Mortinson, both of whom he exceeded in height by more than 2" (5 cm), while playing a character in Gimli (~4' 5" or 135 cm) who was written as being nearly 2 feet (1' 9" or 53 cm) shorter than both Aragorn and Legolas (~6' 2" or 188 cm).

When Éomer hears it he's in complete astonishment. To quote the book: Wide wonder came into Éomer's eyes. 'Strider is too poor a name, son of Arathorn,' he said. 'Wingfoot I name you. I really love that you picked up on the environmentalist side of things concerning the forest/tree cutting. There’s an undercurrent of the industrial exploitation that Tolkien saw in the industrial evolution that occurred in the days leading up to the first World War, which much of this series is a metaphor for. Just nice to see a reactor realize that during the scenes of them cutting down the woods.

I realize this is some months after your delightful reaction to TTT and I think I can help clarify a question you guys raised. In Tolkien’s world beings have a body and a spirit (fëa). When they die the spirit goes to the Halls of Mandos in Valinor-and then, depending on their species, onwards. Humans received the gift of mortality; after a lifetime their spirits move on until the end of the world at which time all the spirits the Creator made will join in a great celebration. The elves will be returned to a life in a body-generally in Valinor. Elves remain alive for the duration of the world; at the end of the world their spirits are liberated and join in the great celebration. Elves are immortal in that they don’t die while the world survives. Tolkien created the elvish language, then had to create characters to speak it, then stories and a history for those stories. That’s how the Silmarillion, the Hobbit, and the LOTR came into being.

In Elrond's defense, his daughter was not the first person of his family who chose a mortal life. He once had a twin brotther named Elros. Elros also chose to live as a mortal man, and Elrond had to see him age and die. So he's speaking from experience here. Also to make it more painful, Elves and humans have a different fate after death, so Elrond believe that if Arwen chose mortality there was a very real chance he'd never see her again just like his brother.

Regarding the "White Wizard's" voice: It does start out in Saruman's voice, but morphs into Gandalf's. A little trick Peter Jackson used. And he used it once before, in The Fellowship when Sam "takes one more step," Frodo reminds him of what Bilbo said, "Be careful, .." He starts out in his voice but ends up in Bilbo's.

i don't remember the movies covering it, but the "beef" that the steward of gondor has with farimir (borimers brother) is that his wife died giving birth to him, and he's basically blamed him for her death all this time i also LOVE the little score game between legolas and gimli, like it's self counted, but they are both way to proud to cheat and trust each others score

@@wadumin Gandalf (Olórin) is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits) created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will & individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf & lived among them whilst they were unknowing & he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity & simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves) Gandalf The Grey/White Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful. 300 lives of men, according to Tolkien, the average life span of a man is 70 years. So, 300 x 70 is 21000 years. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) & the other Istari (the order sent around the same time & of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is & a student of the Vala by the name Nienna & Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was one of the Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being & Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” & basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife; sadness; and longing. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea “Arien” is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon. Of which that other Maia was “Tillion” Galadriel herself not only witnessed this but as a student of Aulë and the other Valar she obviously had involvement in helping create the hallowed objects that housed the final flower of the silver tree Telperion that was the father of the moon and the mother of the sun was Laurëlin the golden tree and prior to the sun and moon they too used to wax and wane!

Gandalf it´s one of the five Istari... sent to the middle earth by the Valar. With Saruman, it´s also Gandalf, Radagast and the two blue wizards. Saruman was the white because he was chosen as the leader of all them. When he turned to darkness... Ilúvatar chose a new leader.... returning Gandalf from the limbo as Gandalf the White.

The thing about helms deep is, they can't call for anything but Gondor, because everyone else would be way to far away to arrive in time for the battle. The kingdom of the dwarfs for example is way up in the north, weeks of travel away.... and please, don't call Ents "trees".

The part about the dead marshes includes Legolas’s Father; Thranduil, & grandfather Oropher, were to join the Last Alliance in from a different angle to achieve a certain war tactic but Oropher and others got waylayed by orcs & many corrupted men which lead to eventually Oropher dying there, this loss effected Legolas’s father so very deeply forevermore. The bond between he and his son is the same bond Thranduil has with Legolas. And the braid he wears is to honour his grandfather. I believe after his death braids became less common. A sort of respect thing I believe. Both his father and Grandfather lived in Doriath(Elu Thingol’s domain[Elwë], which was heartbea of middle earth; Aside from Gondolin which held this mantle until it’s secret location was given up by a tortured elf who was the son of a very important mother who was the sister of the high king Turgon). All on a landmass called Beleriand that sunk under the sea after a set of disastrous events that lead to many greater outcomes much later on in the legendarium. This here is a whole set of stories of which also includes a quite a bit of Galadriel too but moreso other characters during this era. Of Beren And Lùthien comes to mind and Children Of Hurin!! You’ll fall in love even more after the third movie. Then you can enter into the lore videos like Moviejoob and OmarioRPG have done reaction videos too. Amazing stuff. One thing to add though is this scene resembles a lot from the other battle Tolkien was involved in called The Battle Of Somme. Look into it and tell me your thoughts. I’ll add something here though: that clan of elves really didn’t like being under the command of anyone else so they went ahead without the order and let’s just say it didn’t end well. That and they weren’t fond of the Ñoldor… huge history there as to why that is. That and the Sindar subgroup of these clans were a tiny bit more isolationist. But there are many amazing Sindar in the legendarium too Elrond and his two sons and daughter are connected to all of the main clans of men and elves through the union of his half elf father and full elf(quarter goddess) mother. Who essentially played a huge role in saving the world from the original dark lord Morgoth. Gained the Favour Of Valinor. Which subsequently lead to Numenor being a gift from the sea to the men who helped. Becoming blessed. Their land existing within the light of Valinor as it was situated closely to The Undying Lands. (The same ancestry Aragorn has that Èowyn spoke of while they were travelling to Helm’s Deep! (Elrond’s Twin Brother became the first king of Númenor. His name becoming Tar-Minyatur, and those faithful to Eru, the elves and the natural world all of this line carried Tar before their name! Ar for Aragorn is the word meaning Noble in his tongue called Adúnaic. That too is a fleshed out language Tolkien created too. Elvish languages also were placed into the official list of world languages too!

43:30 The tear that Grima sheds upon hearing Saruman's command to the troops, _"Leave none alive!"_ might be due to him realizing, at that moment, that his beloved Éowyn will not only be killed, she will very likely be eaten. Anyway, he hopes things happen in that order, but you never know... To an Uruk hai, she might very well look too urgently scrumptious! ;-]

You’ll love this - Aragorn spared Grima for pragmatic, political & moral reasons. Morally: Killing someone is bad. Even when perceived as justified Tolkien didn't feel that taking a life was ever the honourable thing to do. Pragmatically: Grima might have knowledge about Saruman's plans. Maybe even some of Sauron's plans. Information that they could have extracted from him if he'd accepted the king's 'mercy'. Politically: You've not seen your king in months. Rumour has it he's gone mad and that Grima is the one running the kingdom now. Next time you see your king he's flinging Grima down the stairs unarmed, about to swing a sword through his head. Grima was even begging for mercy. That's not a good look for Theoden's first act as the King again after being silent for so long. (Tolkien stated there is no wholly evil, only supreme goodness but thinking in terms of only black and white tend to always lean eventually towards some form of evil)). His words on it were beyond perfect. I was paraphrasing based on my current memory.)

@@wadumin Others believe that until then Wormtongue has essentially been working under the impression that Saruman would certainly defeat Rohan but largely leave most of the people alive, except the soldiers, and he would have Eowyn and there would be some semblance of a kingdom to rule over. It was at this point he realised that Saruman actually wanted genocide and everyone would be dead. He was certainly an evil little shit but this was a step too far.

I'm so glad you younger people appreciate these masterpieces. You have to look for the making of the movies, to understand how committed were Jackson and the whole team, and achieved to make movies whose CGI seem new 23 years later. There were actually techniques and software invented for the Trilogy, that are used even now. Imagine that I was 26 when the these movies came out, and the graphics, the costumes and the make up were unreal to me back then. Well, I was one of the lucky ones. I'm 49 now and they are still my all time favourite movies. Note: In the books the main story is the same, but in the movies things are omitted and others added (like the elves in Helm's Deep, the were never there). But if you read the books, don't let it make you appreciate less the movies. Peter Jackson did an incredible job. I look forward for your reaction to the Return of the King. YOU are going to LOVE it!
