Though many of viewer, myself included, might wonder why you take on certain cars, no one can deny how amazing you are at diagnosing and repairing them. In an age when dealers only replace- not fix, and being self-taught, you are exceptional.

Worth noting that Modern cars with this sort of O ring setup will fail the same way when they age out, Nitrile O rings are a part of Euro cars and they simply harden and fail over time. Modern cars will have way more failure points at the age the 944 is now especiaally considering the almost exclusive use of Vege oil based rubber and plastics.

usually with timing belts... you find the longest span.. and with fingers and thumb.. you see if you can twist the belt 90 degrees.. no more.. if you can twist the longest span more. then its too loose. if you can't twist it 90 degrees it will be too tight and sound like a super charger when you start it.. and snap the end of the cam off also ruining the cam bores usually.. why is cam belt tension so critical. too tight and you prevent the oil clearance between the cam and cam bores.. you are also yanking up on the crank against the main bearings.. same with the balance shaft belt.. too tight and you eliminate the oil clearance.. too loose and the belt flops.. do you want to know how many 924/944s end up with broken cams.. google it.. don't be amazed.. thank you for realigning the oil cooler so the bypass valve is free to move and not bound up.. creating excess pressure thru the oil cooler at high engine speeds.. i wish i had thought about his earlier that you should while the intake is off.. look at the engine control wiring diagram and do a resistance test from the ground bolt for the fuel injection harness and each of the ground connections at the pigtail connectors. there have been issues with loose crimps where the multiple wires are bound to the main ground.. and its deep in the harness.. keith fenner on youtube actually build a brand new engine control harness to get rid of that issue. for a laugh.. my brother was chief engineer in several major recording studios in hollywood over his working years.. he had a friend with a 914 that was bored and stroked 4 cylinder.. he had computer issues also .. my brother ask him to drop off the computer for resoldering to the green duplex on the south west corner of x and y streets.. when my brother got home a little while later. as he rushed thru the living room the lady across the street was there.. as he is standing in the bathroom.. he overheard the conversation in the living room.. yes.. i need to talk to the bomb squad.. somebody has left a bomb on my porch.. and it must be german terrorists.. as i can see the aluminum case.. electronics inside and the word Bosch on the cover.. she had a green house on the south east corner of x and y streets. it took some quick talking to get the police to believe its not a bomb but a car computer.. about 20 years later i ran into that lady in a 99 cent store.. we were laughing like lunatics in the aisle talking about it..

Interesting video. Makes me glad I have a Volvo 240 instead of a Porsche. Mind you, even the 240 has its oddities. The flame trap/oil separator is a pain to service. Don't ask about the heater blower motor! The rest of the car is bog simple to work on. A simple timing belt takes about 30 minutes. At just about 400,000 miles, I can't complain. Do love driving that style of Porsche, though. They are great fun.

Now with 4 valves per cylinder in the S2 (and in the previous S) the S2 made roughly the same hp as the first generation Turbos, with none of the lag, no extra maintenance., and better grunt down low. No modern engine eh? I have a 2012 Sonic that the harmonic balancer degraded so much that in rubbed against the plastic cover behind it. That cover was to protect the timing belt. When the cover was sufficiently degraded it sent a piece between the belt and the crank gear making it skip 4 teeth. Yep you guessed it. It then bent all 16 valves in the head. Thankfully no damage to the pistons or block. A new head and harmonic balancer later and it's up and running. Total for me to do the work was just over $1,000. Imagine if I paid some one for that work. Needless to say the harmonic balancer wasn't a 10 cent part, it was $150 but still.
