For context, for Cannibal Holocaust they press charges against Ruggero Deodato because they did a bit of guerrilla marketing for the movie, paying the actors to actually stay low and don't work for quite some time to sell the illusion that Deodato actually killed them to shoot the movie, basically they act as Cannibal Holocaust was a snuff, and the distribution was subsequentially stopped. Deodato had to call back the actors to show that they were still alive and everything was just advertising to have the movie back in the theatres, but in the following investigations they brought up that the animal killings were real so he was charged for animal cruelty, in fact this movie contributed to a change in the industry that lead to the "no animals were harmed in the making of this film" disclaimer in the credits

@SuperNiceteeth8 күн бұрын
The movie does so little to explore why he died, which is the important part. It also adds things that weren't in The Bible and don't add to the story, so there's a difference between not holding back, and just being brutal for the sake of it. Christ died for our sins, not our entertainment.
@RayNotCharles8 күн бұрын
Craziest thing though, putting aside any and all of the historical inaccuracies or misconceptions or whatever, is even with how brutal Passion was/is, it still barely scratched the surface of what really happened. Like in the movie, you can still kinda recognize Jim Caviezel after the flogging. But in reality, they say Jesus was barely recognizable as a human being. Basically a slab of beef in a meat locker looked more human than him.

The problem with Cuties wasn't the poster. It was that they exploited young girls (in this case, 11 year olds) to show that exploiting young girls is wrong. Which is just a bad idea, for obvious reasons. It also wasn't a very good movie, just as an aside.
@davidfortier69769 күн бұрын
It isn't exploitative, it's just absurd. It's like someone wrote a coming of age movie about high school seniors, then without making any changes, switched all the characters with sixth graders. There's just a certain fraction of the population that needs to be mad all the time and they were having a slow month.

I'm not going to write an essay about Pasolini's _"Salo'"_ in the comment section of WatchMojo, of all places. But considering is an old and foreign film, probably most Americans today have no idea of the context, and few notes in regard could be of interest. It's undeniable that _"Salo'"_ belongs in this list, if anything it should have been ranked higher, because _oh boy_ it caused a stir back then, and almost 50 years later it's still not done. What's also undeniable is its serious and non exploitative nature, though. Pasolini - an extremely relevant cultural figure in Italy during the '50s and the '60s, better known as a poet, writer, and political activist before he decided to experiment with film making in the last 14 years of his life - spoke clearly about the message behind _"Salo'"_ : He used De Sade and Dante as inspiration, an almost documentary style, and the last days of the fascist _Republic of Salo'_ as setting, to symbolise the depravity, moral decay, and power abuse of his own times. Pasolini believed that society was heading toward the abyss via excessive consumerism and libertarian agendas which would turn everything - including people - into spectacles and commodities. I'm not here to discuss whether he was a visionary or a luddite, you can make your own mind about it if you wish, although I'd say that is pretty hard to prove him wrong whilst sharing the same timeline with a Hawk Tuah meme coin. The point of this comment is to clarify that _"Salo'"_ in its essence is a denounce against exploitation, and as such it's a complete 180° from any torture porn. That didn't stop said sub-genre to use it pretty much as textbook to spread a glaze of morality over the juicy cake of spectacularised violence, and this is why we can't have nice things. But you'll have to admit, that's hardly _"Salo'"_ nor Pasolini's fault.
@A.B-b3u9 күн бұрын
That's exaxtly what i tought. And to reduce this work, so complex, so political, so important to its time, to a simple "provocation" is truly a display of ignorance.
@EveningSoother9 күн бұрын
@@A.B-b3u It is, hence my comment. But I wouldn't call out the channel for going in that direction, as _"Salo'"_ is generally considered a horror film in the US. Its English page on Wikipedia makes the slight attempt of straightening the record by calling it "political art horror", and IMDB defines it as "Drama", but in the same breath it suggests films such as _"Cannibal Holocaust"_ and _"A Serbian Film"_ in its "More Like This" section. It's disheartening to see _"Salo'"_ mixed with such titles, not because they are horror films - a genre I love and respect - but because they are sad examples of spectacularised violence, the very thing Pasolini tried to warn us against with _"Salo'"_ . Which in a way, proves his point further, I suppose.

The GITS backlash is hilrious because Major's body was SUPPOSED to not match. That was the POINT. In the original film, the has bright blue eyes, a sharp jawline, and a narrow Caucasian nose. Section Nine is in a sort of future Hong Kong; looking like a white expat would make her less likely to be suspected as an undercover cop. Because, again, it was a mass-manufactured body they put her in that DID NOT MATCH. She even finds another person wearing her same model of shell while she's out in the streets.

@user-em6ie2be7x Not really that hard to understand if you think about it. It isn't historically or biblically accurate really at all. Focuses solely on the torture of Jesus, not his actual message. That is a choice that puts the motivation in question for some certainly understandably. All that said, for me, it just wasn't a very good film. It's not particularly well made or written. Also I don't buy for even a second that Caviezel was hit by lightning during the filming or any of that other rumor marketing nonsense that surronded the film.
