Sad news everyone, legendary Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart has passed away this week, following his struggle with brain cancer. He was only 67. Let's take a moment to pay tribute to him by sharing in the comments which Rush song was your favorite, and if you ever saw him perform live.

John Bonham, Keith Moon, and Neil Peart are definitely my three top drummers may they all rest in peace because nobody could ever touch their Raw Talent! As a female drummer myself at the age of five I knew I was different my uncle was a teenager had a decent drum kit in the basement I was always putting in an 8-track tape and making a lot of noise LOL until that noise became something that I never knew I had Within Me I definitely consider it my craft along with singing because my father was a doo-wop singer that new a lot of names back in the day I just love the way it makes me feel to roll across the drums like an ocean wave now that there's so many more females out there which is great it just goes to show that that you have that talent in that drive don't hold yourself back just go out there and take it it's yours for the taken May these drummers continue to inspire the ones that are still here with us each instrument takes a whole lot of practice and a whole lot of years to learn I happen to believe in reincarnation there is a young man by the name of Avery that plays every single drummer to be known to man in this child from the age of 3 years old to now 16 I believe can play anybody style drumming is if he has their soul in him it is unbelievable! Whatever you do just keep rocking on thank you kindly for allowing me to speak I'm 49 years old I was born with rhythm and I'm thankful to the good Lord above amen XOXO

Just check out some Tool, like ‘Lateralus’ , where the song is totally constructed in Fibonacci’s sequence ... how many rock songs and drumming structures can you say that about? or "Rosetta Stoned" off of '10,000 Days' If anything, this track is a testament to Danny Carey’s skill as he quickly shifts between 4/4, 5/8, 5/4, 11/8, 3/4, and 6/4 time signatures to drive the band. Paice, never one to grab the limelight, is underrecognized, whereas the ones listed here are all familiar to the general public. I'd definitely put him in the top ten for his creativity and ability to make his drumming interesting yet cohesive with everything else. One rule of thumb is whether you'd enjoy focusing your ear on just the drumming in a song. That's true with Ginger Baker and Stewart Copeland; it is also true with Paice. Not so with some of the others on this list, but hey, it wasn't put together by musicians.

There isn't a drummer on this list that could hang with Peart, at least from a technical standpoint. The guy may not be human. When I learnt drums during school dinner hour because the food was so naff my early influences were Ringo Starr (Beatles) John Coghlan (Status Quo) Pick Withers (Dire Straits) Later influences were Led Zeppelin and Rush.. The grounds man at the school taught me in the music room for the eye watering cost of 10p for the hour.. Mid 80s and my dear old nan gave me the money for my first drum kit.. Up to then I was using upturned paint tubs.. Still got my original sticks to this day.. Best balance ever. The Art teacher recorded me and my mates who played the guitar and keyboards on his 8 track when we did a school assembly once.. From that day on the bullies left us alone.. One day in rehearsal the headmaster walked in and the room fell silent.. We thought he had come to complain about the noise.. He sat down at the piano and began to play Blue Moon. So I joined in.. Happy days.. I still have the recording of the recording lying around on a cassette gathering dust..

I disagree that Ringo was not a technical drummer, He absolutely was - with his own rules and style. Also, although some including George Martin have said he was not always on beat, the times he was a little "off beat" it was deliberate. He was spot on most of the time provided he could even hear himself and the band. All the screaming did interfere at times. No beat boxes - he was a rare dependable drummer who kept a steady beat for the Beatles. He also understood as any good artist the value in restraint. I wish you had done more extensive, and comprehensive research an all f these drummers. Not sure I would place these on my top 10.

The reason Led Zeppelin disbanded after the death of John Bonham is the very reason he's by far #1, even today. The rest of the band knew without Bonham's unique talent and style, Led Zeppelin would never be the same creatively. Neil Peart of Rush is a very good drummer,I also like Nico McBrain of Iron Maiden & that guy for God Smack, his name escapes me.. But to put anyone above John Bonham, not a chance.. Bonham like Led Zeppelin as a band were ahead of their time and the trailblazers in Rock & Roll of the 60's & 70's.

@bengoulding69636 жыл бұрын
100% correct and very well explained. 'Good as they all were, he had so many signature beats and grooves that to this day are seldom replicated. To this day, many ,many people don't understand it was their CHEMISTRY that was the magic.

For me the part of Bonham's playing that puts him over Peart is how he plays to Page's guitar riffs. If you don't know what I mean, take a Zeppelin song like Rock n Roll for example. Listen to Bonham's beat behind Jimmy's guitar riff through the song. He finds a way to somehow imitate the guitar on the drums. It's genius and whenever he does this in a song it gives it that certain groove that makes it sound like Zeppelin and nothing else. Peart is an extremely precise and creative drummer, but he just doesn't groove like Bonham does, and for me that's what separates them.
@mudstone64977 жыл бұрын
Luke Breunig And the groove of Moon, interpreting Pete Townshend's riffs, Roger Daltrey's singing and John Entwistle's baselines along with being a 10 piece percussion band on his own, puts him ahead of both Bonham and Peart in the all time top drummer debate! Ringo came from the song school of drumming. He took it as his responsibility to first keep time, he was often called the human metronome. Second was to do all he could to enhance the melody, make everyone else sound good. He inspired me. He also inspired several drummers on the list one of which was Bill Ward.of Black Sabbath, Clive Bunker of Jethro Tull and Frank Beard ZZ Top.
@wanderer19552 жыл бұрын
Well said. Bravo. Every rock drummer worth his salt, says they were influenced by Ringo Starr. Problem is ppl think you are only a great drummer if you can do 20 min drum solos. All 20 min drum solos do is give folk the opportunity to go to the toilet.

John Bonham was totally unique, musical, dynamic, creative, powerful, intricate, and rock solid. Unmatched in his Sound, Grooves and Approach to the kit. People like Dave Grohl, Chad Smith, Tommy Lee, Mick Fleetwood, Roger Taylor, Bev Bevan, Mike Portney, Bill Ward, Brian Tichy, Liberty Devitto, Dave Lombardo, Carmine Appice, etc. have gone on record, stating of Bonhams unique style and greatness making him the greatest single exponent drummer in rock. Not too shabby...... Neil Peart is amazing but his phrasing was overkill. Keith Moon was flashy and uncontrolled BONHAM was creative and solid. John Bonham

I’m always so surprised that I never see The Rev or Joey Jordison in any of the best drummers lists, both are insanely fast and even better at writing drum parts. I’ve seen very few drummers be able to go as fast as Joey and I don’t think there could ever be a drummer that writes songs as well as The Rev.

Not to say that Ringo sucks but back in the early seventies I was listening to a radio interview w/ Paul or John... not sure which one because it's been so long. But at one point, the DJ said "that Ringo was the best drummer in the world" and the reply from from Paul or John (after a little chuckle) was "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles". The DJ laughed and then Paul or John said "I'm not joking" DJ "really?" answer "Yeah it's true mate-but we love him" I'm paraphrasing but that was basically how it went.

Zakk Wylde said something along these lines about ranking guitarists. There's really not a "greatest guitarist ever", but rather, just your favorite guitarist. And it's true. I always viewed Jimi as the greatest, but I also think it takes a guitarist to see why Jimi was such an amazing guitarist. But I also know that someone else would have a different guitarist as the greatest.
