Good list, except like always, WatchMojo missed at least one obvious choice. This one being No Country For Old Men. The protagonist Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is killed offscreen by either the antagonist Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) or the cartel. Chigurh then kills Moss’ wife and gets away with everything. While it’s true that the death did take place off screen, it definitely should’ve been on this list since it was A: A villain killing the hero AND his wife. B: It was a very shocking death. C: The villain gets away at the end. D: The movie won 4 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The ending to Rogue One made their sacrifice that much better knowing what happens in A New Hope. Had I never watched the 1977 movie, I would have felt like I did after The Empire Strikes Back. I was NOT happy with Solo's death, although the tender touch to his son's face was a nice touch. The original three dying was probably needed to pass the torch to another group of Jedi. It would be an interesting story if Finn was a Jedi but tempted by the Dark Side because of his conditioning as a Storm Trooper and his need for revenge against Phasma.

I don't think horror movies should count. Also Robocop becomes Robocop because of that incident

While I agree Obi-Wan's death was powerful, dramatic. But man, that duel with Darth Vader was so underwhelming....

Is there a Top 10 or 20 of the other way around, Hero Kills the Villain? I can think of 1 of Superman and General Zod in DCEU Man of Steel; the film's writers confirmed that Zod deliberately provoked Superman into killing him, as he believed that he no longer had a purpose in life, and thus wanted to die after his plan to rebuild Krypton failed. So that's 1 example, but is there any?

There's almost too many to name. In an inordinate amount of Hollywood movies, the good guys win. That's why this list exists, pointing out the few times that's NOT the case.

Hero killing the villain is the standard cookie cutter format. Is what everybody expects from a Hollywood movie. To surprise people, you need to do something different.

even if you die a hero, you can still live on as a legend, an inspiration to others, and maybe taking the villain down with you

Going back a ways, but James Whitmore, as Sgt Peterson, in "Them" was the first time I saw the hero die
