I was surprised there was no mention of Sears after you mentioned Kmart. I was sad to lose both of them. I was shocked you never mentioned Woolworth's, they were around practically forever, and Border's went bye-bye because they refused to adapt to the internet and then only sold their books through Amazon. Also, I really miss Laneco. I haven't seen them since the 90's, but they sold just about everything Walmart style before Walmart was the place to go for that, but the stores were at least half the size.

Kmart was on life support since 2002 after they filed for bankruptcy. The executives were just milking the company. I worked in kmart and sears for a few years. In 2018, when sears filed for bankruptcy the executives gave themselves a 25 million bonus lol. They've all known it's been dying, so they are just paying themselves as much as they can. I only feel bad for the employees that had to work there. I worked with a lot of good people when i worked there.

For years after myself and the rest of my coworkers talked about how much fun we used to have while working there, and that we would've gladly gone back to work part-time. We used to have some pretty wild parties every weekend, and it pretty much formed how I thought retail should be. At the time we called it the Nordstrom of toy stores.

Surprised Value City Furniture didn't make the cut. It was founded in 1991 and until 2008, was a pretty big retail furniture chain. They filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and announced they would close all locations by the early 2010's. But here's the kicker, they're still around. In fact, most locations have since reopened. They made some kind of comeback but I don't know. Saw a commercial earlier this year and thought "They're still around?!". So yeah, they had some kind of revival even though bigger chains like Ashley Furniture, Big Lots and La-Z-Boy are still around and thriving.

Interestingly, at one time Retail Ventures owned Filene's Basement. Retail Ventures incorporated Schottenstein's/Value City Stores (a Columbus OH based off-price retailer that began in 1916), American Eagle Outfitters and DSW (a major shoe retailer). Ultimately Schottenstein's South (the original store I worked at) closed in March 2, 2005 along with two VC/Grampa's locations in St. Louis, then the rest of the chain closed in Dec. 2008. Hilariously, Retail ventures itself was folded into DSW in 2011. I knew a woman who ran Schottenstein's South's shoe department. She had come to us via the DSW merger and I think if she were still alive, she'd have had a hearty laugh to find DSW is the "last man standing", so to speak.

As of February 2024, there are 6 left. 2 in the Continental US: Miami FL but it’s starting to wind down operations. Then one that is going strong in Bridgehampton NY. That’s on the east end of Long Island. That one may last a while longer. It’s in an area devoid of retail. It serves a real purpose. There are also 3 USVI and 1 on Guam. Sears has 12 stores left. 4 in CA. One just reopened in Burbank in late 2023! 2 in WA. One of those is a reopened store in Union Gap in late 2023! There is also 3 in Florida. 1 each in TX, MA, & NJ. The NJ store is near me in Jersey City. It’s in its Going Out Of Business phase now. It once was an anchor store of the Newport Center Mall. It will be gone for good by end of February or beginning of March 24. That will leave 11 stores. Then there is one additional store in PR. I remember Steve & Barry’s. They sold Stephon Marbury’s discounted sneakers here in NYC! Crazy Eddie had great prices. Too bad he was a crook. They used to do an insane price sale on Saturday mornings. Limited amounts of items for the price. You had to wait all night! I shopped there a lot! The most memorable thing about Modell’s? Loved the Crazy Eddie commercials as a kid in the 70s, never knew he was a crook and conman, wow!!!! And I always loved going into Walden Books at the mall or B. Dalton or any book store actually, miss it a lot. I remember a lot of these stores from the mall. Shame so many are gone now.

It’s a completely different and unrelated chain despite the branding. From what I can tell your Kmarts are way better than ours ever were, too.

It might be the same brand but a company in Australia might have bought the rights just like how Toys R Us is thriving in the Philippines even after a Filipino-Chinese company bought the rights

@@charliejoson9145 It was actually co-founded by the same company who founded the original American Kmart, so both Kmarts have the same origin, but they are different companies.

@@charliejoson9145Toy R US is still up and going in Canada by the way too!! That's because it's one of the biggest toy shops in that country. I'm still unsure why that one is open in Canada to this day.

Woolworth's went out of business in the USA at the end of the 1980's and in other countries a few years later. But in the years before that, their stores were full of poor merchandise, so it was a matter of time before they folded.

I forgot about Walden books and Suncoast, if I remember right Suncoast was always over priced.

I remember Modell's for its catchy commercial jingle, and I remember going to a Pier 1 once. Oh, KMart. The one I used to go to constantly is still open, even though they've been saying they'll be closing for years now. I loved Bed Bath & Beyond. I used to go and nerd out over the furnishings and kitchen gadgets.

A large majority of malls nationwide are practically dead too; which doesn't help retailers. Outlet centers & smaller shopping centers took a lot of malls business, people reallly don't want to walk around big malls all day like they used too for the most part.
