Honorable mentions: Double Dragon (1987) Dance Dance Revolution (1998) But seriously. The original Double Dragon just changed the beat 'em up genre with other side scrolling beat 'em up titles that soon followed (examples: Final Fight, Streets of Rage, TMNT, etc.). For Dance Dance Revolution, it was a very successful rhythm arcade game that spawned numerous sequels, spinoffs, and clones. WatchMojo, you really missed out on mentioning these games.

@@tytrips8475 Lol it created fighting games as we know them, including combos. Mortal Kombat simply put blood in an ok fighting game. It didn't affect game design in any way. Only made it more violent and the rating system stems from it but again didn't do anything new gameplay wise other than fatalities, which happens AFTER the battle. Oh and by the way SF2 came out before. There would be no MK without SF2. Let's call it a more violent Street Fighter 2 with sub par gameplay. You clearly like MK more which is fine but what you're saying makes zero sense.

One game that a lot of people don’t know exists is Hexen. It had the same engine as Doom, but was a fantasy style. The wizards and warriors kind of content. For those of us who are fantasy nuts, the game was/is a great game. It allowed us to essentially “play Doom” if you will, while still playing a fantasy game.

I think you absolutely nailed it with Grand Theft Auto III as the top pick. Its influence has continued not only through its sequels but also pretty much every open-world game to follow since then. Rockstar has adapted its formula even outside of the GTA series, from Red Dead Redemption to Bully. And most open-world games take a leaf out of Rockstar's playbook when crafting their games. Other games I would have highlighted include Bejeweled, since it directly inspired many of the match-three clones that defined the early days of smartphone gaming, and Dance Dance Revolution, for embodying dancing games that made you move your body, including Step Mania or even Beat Saber.

Street Fighter 2 should be on the list since there were so many clones in the early 90s in arcades and on consoles. Maybe whatever puzzle game started the match 3 or 4 of the same icon/color to remove them, since there seems to be countless puzzle clones on mobile phones using that gimmick. Arguably Sonic the Hedgehog since there were plenty of animal character platformers in the early 90s. Super Smash Bros since other developers did try to make their own version of Smash, sometimes even in full 3D. Pokemon? Since there were several Pokemon clones or wannabes in the late 90s and early 2000s riding on how popular Pokemon was.

I can't believe you didn't mention Devil May Cry/God of War clones. There were so many of them during the PS2 and PS3 eras. Western Hack and Slash games basically copied GoW while the Japanese were heavily inspired by DMC.

@domx7zero157 Yeah, that's true but it's still different in some areas like the puzzles (inspired by Ico). And there is no focus on style when it comes to combat. There is also a lot of platforming in the older GoW compared to DMC. The funny thing is I didn't buy the first GoW when it was released because people told me it's a DMC ripoff, so I assumed it's a bad game.

While I do not disagree much with the mentioned games per se, the list suffers a lot of cult-of-the-new. Really were Soulslike #4 and DOTA #7 more CLONED (or even influenced) than Assassin's Creed #11 or .... Mario #12? Also, Minecraft and PUBG among the most CLONED games of all time? Diablo (loot-based, procedural generated maps), Command & Conquer (RTS), Maniac Mansion (Click and Point Adventures)

My statement meant that you seem to not be aware of the millions of jrpgs inspired by Dragon Quest beyond the NES era. Ultima inspired PC western rpgs, it's two different things. Dragon Quest is not a clone of Ultima. The gameplay is vastly different. If you look at Final Fantasy and most jrpgs, they are clearly inspired by Dragon Quest, not Ultima. There you go. Not that complicated.

In my Opinion, "Minecraft" is the STUPIDEST VIDEO GAME EVER MADE! And I don't just say that about any video game. The very fact that Nintendo made Minecraft's Character Steve a Playable character in Smash Bros Ultimate at all just ENRAGES ME! (The Fact that he is a DLC Character is irreverent to my problems with the "Minecraft" Franchise but it doesn't help it either). But knowing that my #1 Favorite Actor (Jack Black) is going to be wasting his talents in a Movie adoption of the STUPIDEST VIDEO GAME EVER MADE just makes me pity him.
