Allo, Allo! but no Dad's Army; Blackadder but no Not the Nine O'clock News; and Brass Eye is overlooked? I agree with another contributor that the omission of the beloved Dad's Army is the single most inexplicable omission in this list. It ran and ran, missing episodes remade, making of drama documentaries. In my opinion Dad's Army is equally as important as Fawlty Towers in British television comedy.

The other episode I saw was the one where we saw several scenes from different viewpoints, different languages. Clever, a tour de force, but I didn't care for the characters, most of whom were jokes. The two "straight " characters, the couple we supposedly identified with, I remember the woman belittling the man in front of the others because he fell short in her eyes and (I realize it was only twice) but he would loudly confess his shortcomings and his love instead of walking out on the bitch forever. You have to do another list. So many not mentioned - 2 Ronnie, French and Saunders, Wood and Walters, Phoenix Nights and the greatest ever... Morecambe and Wise
@emmabarber59894 жыл бұрын
Morecambe and Wise are my all time favourite double act. I do understand why they weren't included though as it wasn't a sitcom. But for British comedy in general they would definately be in my number 1 spot.

Wood and Walters was a sketch show. Looking at what made the list I can't believe VW's sitcom Dinnerladies got missed though

I'm probably the only one who remembers No, Honestly with John Alderton and very young and very delightful Pauline Collins. It used to be on Chicago television at 10:00 pm Sunday nights in the late 1970s (followed by Monty Python's Flying Circus at 10:30).

For me as follows.... 1. One Foot in the Grave. 2. The Brittas Empire. 3. Ever Decreasing Circles. 4. Only Fools.... 5. Fawlty Towers. 6. Hi De Hi. 7. The Good Life. 8. Some Mothers Do ave em. 9. The Office . 10. The Vicar of Dibley. 11. Filthy Rich and Catflap.

I missed Benny Hill on this list, here in Los Angeles one of our local channels ( 13 KCOP I believe) used to play this regularly and I loved it and Monty Python as a kid. Faulty Towers, the Young Ones, the Office, Bottom, and Ab Fab are also a laugh riot. Need to catch the rest.
@grumpygrognard72924 жыл бұрын
Agreed with most picks. Disappointed in not seeing "Mr. Bean" or "Thin Blue Line" in the mix. Maybe they thought that it would be too much Rowan, but is there such a thing? Jim Broadbent's "Peter Principle"/"The Boss" is quite funny and worth mentioning as well.

Subjective, of course, but I'd change the order (IT Crowd #1, Red Dwarf #2, Black Books #3) and throw out a few. I never got the love for Only Fools & Horses (but I AM an Aussie) and a few others. What about Hancock's Half Hour, Bottom, Father Ted, The League of Gentlemen, The Mighty Boosh, The Day Today, Mitchell & Webb (instead of Peep Show...it makes me squirm!), Armstrong & Miller, .....and DERRY GIRLS! And a shout out to Chance In A Million, Would I Lie To You, 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, Absolute Power, Jeeves & Wooster (& Fry & Laurie) the earlier years of the much maligned Benny Hill, Dad's Army, and Toast of London....Blinkin' 'ell! So many great shows! The Brits do great radio comedy, too! Some of the above started out as radio shows.

The British made far too much fantastic comedy to stick within a list of just 20 - I'm old enough to remember Morecambe & Wise, Tommy Cooper, the Two Ronnies and Peter Cook & Dudley Moore. More recently, Ab Fab and Yes Minister/Prime Minister are just two. My Australian-born son would add Black Adder and Red Dwarf to the list. For me though, Allo Allo and Benidorm are my current faves.
