I graduated USNA in 1986. I never knew why we played Notre Dame every year. In fact, it aggravated me because it was a virtual guaranteed loss and I thought we were used as a gimme game for Notre Dame and that money was a big factor in being on their schedule. I’m somewhat embarrassed that I never knew the history of the rivalry and the mutual respect involved. Thanks for this video. I can now go forward and give a great and truthful answer whenever someone asks me why Navy plays Notre Dame every year. Go Navy!

Being a Navy Fan Since 2003 Had To See ND Beat Navy For 4 Years Starting in 2003 to 2007 Until The Biggest Win If Not One of The Biggest Wins in Navy Football History Ending 43 Years Of Losing To The Fighting Irish From 1964 to 2007!

A former Marine and Navy Corpsman I love the Irish and Navy. I get real conflicted during this game.

I'm a UConn grad and a South Bend native with family ties to ND. My grandfather was invited to teach there after WWII, which paved the way for my mother's entire family to emigrate to the US. Our family will be forever grateful to ND for that. When ND and UConn met on the gridiron in 2009, I was at the game and it was the only time I ever rooted against my alma mater.

Man....I love ND...but sadly I was a member of the class of 2011. I witnessed firsthand losing 3 of 4 to Navy (2007, 2009, and 2010). It is crazy now hearing about the 43 year streak. All I saw us ever do while I was a student was lose to Navy. Thanks Weis for that (I blame him even for the 2010 loss. Kelly was still adapting his system and Weis culture was still there).

As a Navy Fan I Have Wonderful Respect For Notre Dame In My Heart So I Don't Hate ND As Much!

Maybe you can get your players to stop throwing those illegal blocks to the knees, huh? Respect is one thing, playing dirty is another. We always lose at least one player (knee), after playing Navy.

I do not know if Navy still does this. But for many years at the Army-Navy game, Navy would have empty seats behind their bench with the Jerseys of players from the previous 3 years that were Killed in Action ( KIA ) draped over the chairs.

It's like talking to your grandpa about advice and getting the same story over and over again. It all started during World War II. ------------------. And that's why we play Navy. It's a good story the first few times you hear it, it's a great story and even inspiring. But at some point it becomes annoying to keep hearing the same story over and over again. That is how I feel about playing Navy. World War II ended 75 years ago and we can't pretend that college football is the same as it was then when the agreement was made. In an era where we have a college football playoff, playing Navy does nothing for Notre Dame. Whatever Notre Dame owed Navy has been repaid and then some. Great story, great history, now it's time for Notre Dame to move on.

Notre Dame isn't going to be contending for anything now or in the not so distant future. The Southeastern U.S. has completely taken control of college football. Might as well play a fun series when you're nowhere close to contending for a championship. Not to mention Navy is habitually either close to being ranked or ranked in the top 25 under Ken Niumatalolo, hes elevated the program to heights even Paul Johnson couldn't reach.
@erinmclaughlin46855 жыл бұрын
That's not the point. As a former high school defensive coordinator, I hated preparing for teams like this. They run an offense you will not see again until next season. You have to change your defense for one game. It throws off your timing and rhythm. Not to mention the the risks you put your players at from the cut blocking. It's not fun to prepare for.

I prefer playing a class opponent as opposed to a Mercer, Stamford or The Citadel.

Your way off...I'd ay take Navy off schedule cuz they're a very difficult opponent and very difficult to scheme against...They had the mighty Buckeyes beat in the Horseshoe also...None wants to play Navy--not cuz "Navy does nothing for Notre Dame," ur words definitely not mine, but because playing anyone the following week ur ripe to get beat...I think teams schedules reflect that, you have the Navy game and if ur lucky to win it, ur sooo beat up typically the following week they do get beat or they play bad...Army is equally a difficult opponent for same exact reasons--They also had mighty Oklahoma beat and still don't know how they gave that one away...Nothing but respect for them...Ask Lou Holtz about the other academy in Air Force who beat Lou's teams...The Academies are all incredible.So I respectfully disagree with your thinking.
@erinmclaughlin46854 жыл бұрын
@@charliebabbitt3314 actually I agree. I have made that point on the Navy game as well. I used to be a high school defensive coordinator. Preparing for a team like this is a nightmare. It throws your timing off and you have to change your scheme. So yeah. You make a great point. I never said my reasoning was the only reason to take Navy off. Just one.
