Wells are expensive up front but totally worth it and keep some jugs inside in case of power outages. Also consider water pressure and how you want to heat your water. With garbage, it's nice to try to purchase items with limited packaging, dispose of fruit,vegetable waste and shredded paper in a compost heap for your garden. You can burn yard waste and paper and add the ash to your compost too. Certain campsites have water fill stations and truck stops but I don't know much about it. You could also purchase water from neighbors for a good deal. There's also some kind of water system in your house that can recirculate and filter your used shower water so you can reuse the same water for other things

Thanks so much for this great information! I didn’t know about the grey water filter. Lots of great info!

Excellent info! That county is actually giving people incentive to dump illegally with that setup. I imagine there are a lot of illegal dumpsites in the area.
@HomesteadRelianceАй бұрын
I would not doubt that at all. I found a lot of "stuff" in my woods that should have been disposed of. I image that it's county wide.

it is about 25k to drill a well in this part of ok, and it is 50/50 if your going to get sulphur water , i bought two 2500 gallon tanks if i get one inch of rain i will collect at least 600 gallons off my roof , i can haul water from 5 miles away if i need to . if it comes down to it i will just add more storage tanks and still come out ahead of drilling a well
@HomesteadRelianceАй бұрын
Great info and plan! We are also doing rain catchment and storage tanks. Tanks are a lot cheaper than drilling a well.

As a little girl living in Arkansas, we burned “burnable” garbage. We had a metal can out back and did it once a week. Do they do that anymore? Now I live near Houston and they’ve taken down the “Don’t mess with Texas” signs and we now have trash everywhere! It’s sad! Enjoyed the video.
@HomesteadRelianceАй бұрын
Yes, people still burn burnables. We are doing the same (currently in burn ban due to the dryness). Sad to hear about Houston. I have family in San Antonio. I think the trash thing is widespread though. Lots of people don't care sadly.

You probably need a rain catchment for watering your garden and other things for a just in case I have lived in Arkansas before and it's rocks with a little dirt thrown on it so need to do above ground gardening if you're going to garden and I would use metal instead of wood filling the bottom with junk cardboard sticks etc good luck God bless
@HomesteadRelianceАй бұрын
Thanks! Correct rain catchment and raised bed gardens. Does the metal raised gardens work better? Very new to us (Wisconsin did have great soil). God bless too

Trash: like everything, if it is expensive or not user friendly, people will not throw trash away properly. Our county in NC has been trying to tackle this problem for years. In 2024, now we have a specific flat rate added to property tax and trash disposal at any county random site is free. You just have to haul to a site. Now we have folks with pickups and trailers offering hauling off your trash to a site for a small fee. Keep in mind the person with truck/trailer dump trash for free. But many senior citizens are calling/hiring these folks because they do not have to mess with loading trash in personal vehicle, driving to site, then unloading trash into dumpsters.

That sounds like a good plan. And folks can make a bit of income!

@MannyWC Yes, gentlemen who can not work due to health issues can make some pocket change.

That sounds like a great plan and make opportunities some others too!

Here's some additional, hopefully helpful, info. If you ever need car/truck repairs, the absolute best garage in the area is J&B Auto in Harrison. They do all our car repairs, other than a few things for our diesel. We like Plaza Tire for new tires. They have Great attitudes are super friendly and super Fast. Best hand held freedom device store is 76 Arms & Ammo on Hwy 65 in Bellefonte. The owner is a retired cop, they also have an indoor range. If you need an outdoor range there's one up above Parthenon. It is difficult to find but is great for large caliber weapons. Ace Hardware in Harrison also carries these same kinds of devices but their selection is small. There's also a recycle center in Harrison and in summers they have free garden compost. You would need to call them to find out the days and hours it's available and depending on what time of day you get there you may have to load it, (by shovel), as opposed to them loading it with their front end. Best vet in the area is Harrison animal clinic and they do both large and small animals. The most affordable vet in the area is Affordable Veterinary on Hwy 7 between Jasper an Harrison. We use Shipman Pump service for everything to do with our well. We use Elite Plumbing and Home Repair (owners name is Wayne) for plumbing (gas or water). We decided to move here in 2011 over the years we've learned who we can count on and as we needed them, I would save the contact info for pretty much every company/service we ever used (and liked). Those are the same people we use now.

Thanks so much! My wife was looking for a vet and I was looking for an auto shop (try to do most myself but some things are best left to pro’s) know a good spray foam guy and electrician? Found a hat guy at the Jasper hometown shin dig today.

Sounds like a good reason not to move there.

True for many, but I hope that this changes (if we are talking about the trash thing) Other Than that I would not want to change a thing.
