I would disagree , there is lot of room for error and this hobby teaches you to learn from your mistakes. Nothing goes wrong in a tank in a single day , there are clear indications about what is going wrong in a planted tank . We need to be observant and gain knowledge to rectify the issues and get the tank to balanced state For example , if there is excess ammonia then fishes behaviour will change , if there is excess nutrients then certain type of algaes will start taking over , if there is excess light , different type of algaes will start taking over. I believe we need to be patient and observant if we are serious in this hobby

I'm a big fan of MD Fish Tanks and have been following him since 3 years, his videos are NOT clickbait for sure. He is one of the best (for me) nature style aquascaper and he keeps his videos transparent. I'm following you too since 2 years sir and I love your videos and knowledge that you share. Also, I've Malawi Cichlids tank and it's been 6 months that I didn't change the water. The water is crystal clear and I've had no fish loss at all. They're healthy and very happy. Just that I keep the filter (I'm using big hang on back filter) clean and also do the top up. That's all I do and no other maintenance.

Hi,I am from Nairobi Kenya. I am a very good fan of yours. I have a 10 ft x 2.5ft x 2 ft tank which is filtered by a 5 ft x 1.5ft x 1.5 ft sump. The sump is divided into 3 compartments. The first compartment has a sponge under which I have put coral stones. In the second compartment, it is filled up with lots of bioball ceramic rings and lots and lots of plants and in the third compartment we have the sump and some coral stones. I have 24 frontosas, 9 altolamprologus compresicceps and 9 leptosoma in the tank. I used to feed the above fish once a day, but after realising the problem, I decided to feed once after every 2 days. Now here's my problem.... My ph is 8 My ammonia is 0 ppm My nitrite is 0ppm My nitrate is always between 40 and 80. One of the ways to reduce the nitrate is to do a water change. Altolamprologus compresicceps are very sensitive to water changes. Whenever I do a water change, one or two die. IN SHOT, MY NITRATE IS NOT GOING DOWN DESPITE THE PRESENCE OF LOTS OF PLANTS. WHY ARE THE PLANTS NOT CONSUMING THE NITRATE. Your advice on the above situation will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Not all plant ☘️🌵 consume equal nitrites... use more plants, better plants, Better Filter or multiple Filters. Reduce feed,reduce Fish 🐟 🐠 load, fewer fish In the End 🔚 of 🚫 nothing work then Change Water

@SajSajidmk Thank very much for the kind reply. I really think you are correct...not all plants take up nitrate. I guess had planted wrong plants in the sump... 1.Spider plants. 2. Peace lily. 3. Monsteria 4. Money plant. About half an hour,I removed all the plants. I noticed that about quarter stamp of the Monsteria was actually rotten. Maybe that would be the cause of the nitrate spike. Maybe, I honestly don't know. So,after removing all the plants, I have decided to let the money plants and added some duckweed. I honestly feel the choice of my plants was wrong. I will go ahead and add some more money plants. Now,as far as the water change is concerned, whenever I do it , 1 or 2 altolamprologus compresicceps die, since they are very sensitive to water condition. Let's see what goes on,I'll try and keep you updated. Once again thank you very much for your response

what I learn from this video is we should change the water specially if fake plants are there, secondly it depends on your tank size, when to change and how much to change, like my tank is little bigger so I still need to change it after 1 week, for a smaller tank means more mess so may be 2 times per week, and the water change should be 20% atleast not like 50% until there is an emergency (like fish death,its foul smell or any other infection spreading in the aquarium), may b my concept is wrong but this is what I learn from this video, one can slowly and gradually gain experience, it doesn't comes within night, hats off to sir for beautiful explanation and the water temperature must match the temperature of your aquarium, otherwise your fish are again going to be shocked, the same things happened to me. Hope I could save the fish from dying by following these tips

I do agree with you in 90% of cases. In our Indian subcontinent biggest bane is the temperature, if the temperature is subtropical stays well below 26deg I think its a possibility to maintain a zero maintenance no filter tank. With lower temperature fish and plant metabolism is slow, plants have an upper hand over algae and thrive. I've had several unintentional setups like that over the years. There are 2-3 60liter tubs in my backyard under shade of trees with a dense growth of egeria and floating plants, lilies, etc, these setups are my endless supplies for shrimps and guppies, like each one has 100s of them. That is without filter and water is only topped after evaporation. I also had another tank recently, right under direct sunlight(again unintentional) had no room for this tank so put it out before 2021 winter. It had a few algae issues initially but the tank settled in smooth, it had a dozen melon barbs and eventually by the end of winter the tank had a full dense carpet plus jungle of HM. It was so thick that melon barbs completely disappeared in the thicket. Never seen such hm growth even in my high maintenance co2 setups. But this setup was fine till march of 22, and later it started growing all sorts of algae as temperature rose and I pulled it off. I fed this tank literally once or twice a week as fishes were being fed by bugs and mosquito larvae and had their bellies almost full all the time. There was no filter and water was only topped once two weeks or so... So, it can be fairly said that its good for beginners to avoid such clickbaits as its a tricky unpredictable thing, but with experience and right conditions(which is tricky) its quite possible.

Sir what about the filter? as you said water change depends on aquarium so mine one is decorated with fake plants so there no natural recycling, should we clean the filter like after 2 days or can we wait for at least 1 week to clean it because I have read that filter also contain beneficial bacteria, will cleaning filter after 2 days destroys the good bacteria or not?

No water change, no filter is perfectly possible for Walstad tanks. I have done this multiple times even kept Shrimp. I would go without water change for months. It's all about the balance, and the method, not all methods are same. Each method has a principle to work properly. Thanks

The guy u mentioned as click bait is actually not that bad😅 It's just that as you said that one can't just begin with improper knowledge, I too failed miserably, self reflected and started gaining more knowledge, that's how I reached your content, that was the time i was sure that it can work, started again, did everything same that MD guy did and used your advice of using filter and a diy CO2, touchwood all going great this time, plants are like on steroids, shrimps are doing good and fishes are happy, though i still have many doubts i can't really find answers for, it's request If you could do some qna videos or infact some workshops in Delhi, I think planted aquarium is too underrated here and more and more awareness is required. Also I request you to be honest about sponsored videos, because trust me a simple sponge filter and a diy CO2 is doing the job for me.

is it required to clean fish detritus like poop, pee, food residues, etc in a well planted or heavily planted aquariums with soil in it? if yes, how often? because in terrestrial ecosystem faecal matters get decomposed and used by plants. well, shouldn't it be similar in aquatic ecosystem as well?

after water change regularly my fish started fin and tail rot, I added the conditioner but still water is polluted, so,before adding the water to aquarium, should we keep water in bucket for atleast 24hours after applying water conditioner, may be this solve the harmful bacterial problems, because adding water directly always cause something harmful to my fish, and if i don't change the water, then the ammonia build up occurs, so confused now that what should I do with my tap water
