Thank you, I use the 55g barrel as well with the pvc setup. Inside my barrel is a small submerged pump that pumps to my pvc then a return line to my barrel. I chose that because I couldnt burn up valuable room inside my cage. And a heater in the barrel keeps my setup thawed out. :)

Great idea to save space! Our winters are so cold I don’t think I could run a pvc line unless it was recirculating. Glad you found a solution for your chickens!

@@Heritage-grove update: I treat my water with 2-3 soda caps for chlorine to disinfect the water, cuts back on algae growth. It’s no different ppm than drinking water in a town or city.

What wattage is your de-icer? We live in WI and need to buy 1.

I used the same one this winter, still working well. Farm stores sell them and show recommended tank size. Not sure on wattage

As someone who will be getting 7 chickens this summer, I was already trying to figure out the best watering strategy and thought of this EXACT idea! Just one question: what heater is that? I want to find a heater that will keep the water from freezing while also not spending a fortune on electricity.

I had one from Amazon, but couldn’t find the link so got another at our local farm store- runnings. I chose the higher wattage to support during VERY cold MN winters. Good luck!

Hi! Quick question. How big is the coop you use for your chickens? And how many can it fit? I'm looking for a good size coop for around 32 chickens of both bantam and standard size and I'm wondering if you have any dimensions for a coop that could fit that many birds.

For a standard size chicken it’s 2x2’ area per bird (4sq ft). Mine have unlimited outdoor access as well, so their eggs would be considered pastured. I have about 60 in this coop and have chosen to limit/omit roosters for a more peaceful atmosphere : ) They have 16 nesting boxes and use about 6.

What water nozzles did you use? I'm in the midst of setting up our farmstead and already have 5 chickens going in their coop. But am looking for simpler solutions to keep the chickens watered and fed.

Personally I wouldn't use a drum waterer. I'd rather stick with 2, 5 and 8 gallon metal waterers. The reason is bacterial buildup and stagnation with large amounts of standing water. I water my chickens every other day and clean the slim that builds up with a scrub brush. The chicken notice the difference. Dust, poop and debris build up over time and are not a healthy solution longterm. The other reason is I like being around my chickens. Every time I change their water, they immediately drink it, especially in the hot summer months.

Totally understand and glad you enjoy this chore, for me, I don’t. This system is actually much cleaner for me than the open reservoir waterer I had been using for years. Within minutes the tray was filled with debris before. Naturally the chickens take dust baths, forage in the dirt and eat bugs and worms each day, so they have a strong immunity and filter for junk in their system. I will look into how to keep the water naturally even cleaner though!

Hi! No it doesn’t leak, but when the chickens are drinking, they drip some excess water so that’s why when used inside I added a container under to catch those drips and keep the coop bedding dry.

I hate watering the chickens 🐔, I hate it so much I'm designing a sustainable fully automatic watering system,. I don't mind feeding, but watering has to dissappear forever lol
