Why is a contact time of 20 minutes required for chlorination? Does the chlorination have to take place in a sealed container or could sufficient mixing be obtained in a channel flow? Thanks

Contact time depends largely on available free chlorine and required disinfection performance (which depends on regulations and on the quality of the raw water). The idea is that it requires some time for the chlorine to react with microorganisms to inactivate them. It is usually injected near the end of the treatment process (post-chloration) where turbulence is high enough so that it is evenly mixed. Sometimes in the pipe going to the water reservoir (which contains baffles). So yes, it is done is a relatively sealed environment. This prevents degradation for instance and contamination.

I'm sorry this video is very limited on information. The system shown here is not very good. This would be chlorination 101 A there is a lot more to properly chlorinating well water. You can use it to Oxidize Iron, Manganese. Where I am from (Northern California) The water is very rich in Iron and Manganese with Sulphur. We use UV lights for bacteria at the end of a Treatment system. Stenner pumps with a pulse meter. Also a No Hard Water Valve or Solenoid Valve behind the filters containing the chlorine so Greensand and Carbon filters, to prevent the chlorine from being injected while filters are backwashing.This will insure that no chlorine will pass the system. You will need a service schedule to keep an eye and test because the Carbon filter can and will need to be changed. That is the weak link in the system. Chlorine will pass through it at that point. So Service Schedule is important.
