The Austrian Alps are incredibly beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing your breath-taking imagery with us, Sam and Claire! Beautiful Innsbruck is one of only two locales to twice host the Winter Olympic Games - in 1964 and 1976. The 1976 Winter Olympics were initially awarded to Denver - in celebration of the American Bicentennial. But Denver bailed out at a very late juncture, fearing similar cost overruns as those experienced in Montreal (my birthplace) for the 1976 Summer Olympic Games. The IOC needed a reliable substitute host city quickly, and fortunately Innsbruck stepped up, only 12 years after initially hosting. To stay within the good graces of the IOC, the United States needed to step up again, and Lake Placid offered to host the Winter Olympic Games for second time in 1980 - after initially hosting in 1932.
