Love it brother. I been thinking of adding one to my water heater. So when the sun is up it's heating my water as much as it can for free.

Some nice improvements on the original bucket there I think...! Well done. I like that you have added the switch. The fuse is not strictly necessary if you are running directly from a solar panel (as it's a limited current source) but would be sensible protection if you ever wanted to run it directly from batteries. Which would be quite feasible. The cabling is better too. Less voltage drop. There is actually no such thing as an "AC element" versus a "DC element". Both are just resistance wire and can run off either type of current perfectly fine. The *real* difference is that the so-called DC element is simply wound to produce a certain amount of power on a lower voltage, such as 24 or 48. That is why you would use one of those with a solar based system. A 120 VAC rated element would work, but if you only fed it with 48 volts it would operate at less than a quarter of it's rated wattage. I think the next improvement of the water bucket would be to incorporate some kind of lagging. That would keep the water warmer longer & probably improve the heat-up time. Another improvement would be to replace the thermometer with an actual thermostat. That way you could leave it a bit more unattended. This could be wired with a pilot light that actually comes on when it reaches the temperature you wish as well as turning the element off.

+xanataph thanks, they do have elements with built in thermostats in them. and there are foam inserts available that goes inside but I was trying to keep the price down.

Does the thermostast are required to have water heater elements installed in a project like this? or just a straight cable is enough?

thermostat is like a resettable fuse or safety, do you think it is worth saving a few dollars for peace of mind?

That is really creative. But I wonder if it is too hot for 5 gallons. I look forward to find out how this works for you.

Hi guys… Since the COVID-19 outbreak I’m trying to find a way to make hot soapy water on my service vehicle… I am a person that does maintenance… If someone has a link to the 12 V heating elements with a built-in thermostat that would be awesome… I was thinking of putting a digital temperature readout on the side with a little probe going down into the water so that I could see the temperature of the water from the front. Maybe a small 12 V battery that can trickle charge when my truck is running… And then the heating element will kick on when the truck is running or something… Not sure exactly how I’m going to make it work… I’m going to mount it on my truck right next to the sliding door with a 3 foot hose with a little magnet on the end so that I can attach it to the sliding door to make sure the water goes out onto the ground… Basically a mobile handwashing station.... thank you for this video…

is this what you are looking for? should have some isolation from truck battery so you won't have a dead battery, like a second battery or solar panel on roof. mwands.com/shop/category/dc-water-heating-elements

Rev John O'Toole thanks so much fir the link .....it looks exactly like I want.....👌😁yes, I was thinking to go with a second battery .... and trickle charge it from the truck, and possibly add a solar panel ...and I might use a square 3 gallon bucket, as it fits better on a shelf than a round bucket. I might insulate it somehow too....
