Great video Tim, when in doubt I always will install a lowboy when it's a 30 gallon tank. You can always find supply lines to make up the difference and the shark bites is the way to go, pex, copper, or pvc will take that connection. Great fix, but again, mobile home, apartment, home, I always use the lowboy heater, get's you out of a pinch when needed. Remain blessed and keep the video's coming.

I'm not a plumber, but I thought that last-ditch drain situation was brilliant! Way to pull a solution out of...well, you know! :) And as a video editor for 40 years, I can really appreciate the effort you put into all the camera angles to not only make it interesting, but also to show things that people can actually learn from . Well done!!

Tim, you da' man! It was good to know that someone who knows what they are doing fights with these things just like me, Mr. owner of the rental home that changes the hot water thank myself and goes through similar gyrations. Loved your solution to the drain problem. That seems to almost always be an issue because of the sediment. As a thought, one time we took our compressed air tank and blew air and sediment back into the tank on the drain valve. That blew enough sediment out of the valve that it allowed the tank to drain. Thanks for the informative and entertaining video!

I keep reading that warranty on water heater will be voided and that homeowner's insurance will refuse to pay for future damages if you install a standard heater in a mobile home rather than installing a HUD-approved one. Is this true, or am I safe to upgrade my water heater to a better model?

Just some friendly info. You used a standard shark bite fitting. Shark bite makes a coupling adapter that is designed to fit Poly B . Looks like what you put on but the plastic ring is grey for the Poly B side and the other side will except Pex, CPVC or copper. but the one end is designed for poly B. Ive felt your pain watching this as I've changed many HWT in MH's. They all seem to be a real bear. Cheers on the good video👍

Thank you for this video! I've got a leaking, dead propane water heater that I have to remove from my double wide. You're right about the plumbing, electric, etc in mobile homes! I swear a group of chimps installed my electric and plumbing!! It's all poly butylene so I'm doing a complete upgrade to PEX.. I'm going to have to bypass the heater temporarily first. If you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated! Wish me luck. Again, good video, thanks for sharing it!!!

I'm sitting here scratching my hair out. You can test the circuit by probing the wires from the bottom of the wire-nuts without risking shock. Even better would be a sniffing tool that costs around $15. Also, to drain a good portion of the water you can open the vent and turn on a faucet. I'm assuming you did that. I like the shut-off valve and expansion install. I would've definitely moved that copper line and installed a pan with a moisture sensor in the bottom. Once most customers realize what the benefits are they'll gladly opt in for that service. If they don't you have done due diligence by explaining and offering a solution.

Hey Bud. You have to do what you have to do! I’ve never done a hot water heater. And some reason I have no hot water. And I also live in a mobile home. Do you have any suggestions! I believe the tank that I have in there now is a 50 Gal. And mine is in my bedroom closet which I am kinda lucky on the room I have. But never dealt with that type of water lines. If you go throw any suggestions at me that would be awesome. Thanks. And nice job on the install.!

Just did one of these with John Guest speed fit where you used the sharkbites. Not loving these mobiles. After this experience I am going to plan a tankless setup and recommend upgrading to electric as well. About the same price as a tank. Just the electrical upgrade will have to be figured in.

would you have been better off installing a tankless water heater? I just had a plumber at my mobile home. He looked at the access panel for the waterheater (it's outside the home) and had no clue how to open it up to get in there, let alone put it back. I told him forget it. I was hoping to find a video of how to open that thing up.

Not a plumber but I am an electrician. Anytime you have a wire nut, you should always use it to your advantage. In this case I would have tightened it up a lil bit an left them on until I located it at the box. Just sick the probes on your multi meter up inside the wire nuts. You'll get a reading on it and once you do go flip switch's till you find the right one and then double check it. Good luck out there brother Edit: an also.. I don't see any thing wrong with a sharkbite's lol. Like I said I'm not a plumber. *Turd herder's as you're reff referrederd to the field* 😂😂😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂. Haha im kidding brother

I have pex all over the place and would like to know what sharkbites are and how they work. Some of the pex is joined directly to the faucet as supply lines so there is no place to thread anything to it. Would sharkbites workwith that? Thanks! Just a gal who has to do all my own repairs herself so anyone who's knowledgeable about this would be appreciated.

I live in a mobile home and had Home Depot subs install my water heater. They installed the t&p right into my bellyboard. I didn't know. Apparently, I've had pressure issues for YEARS and the t&p was leaking that whole time in the bellyboard. Didn't know because I never went under there for anything other than to shut the water off. I only found out because I heard the water heater whistling constantly and then noticed water vapor coming UP the t&p valve pipe from the bottom. Went under the house to find where the pipe came out and didn't see it. Finally realized it was covered by bellyboard 😬 All ruined! I replaced the t&p, cleaned out the water heater, replaced the water heater discharge valve (for easier cleaning), and replaced the bellyboard. I also filled the whole in the floor and routed the t&p into a container that I can SEE if it leaks. Well, it still does 😱 Then I changed the main water valve and added a pressure regulator. Didn't stop the leaking. Next step is an expansion tank!

Dude, buy yourself a Fluke 1AC II Non-Contact Voltage Tester. No need to take off those wire nuts. Edit: Also if you create a vacuum on the top with the drain closed and then pop the drain open sometimes you can get the blockage to free up. Can also shopvac out the dip tube if it gets too desperate.

Not a bad job, but cpvc can get brittle and that expansion tank can snap off. The ipc states that the expansion tank must be secured to a wall or ceiling.

I live in a 50 year old double wide, I know about the tight places they put these water heaters, fortunately my house I have a full 8 ft space from floor to celing for the tank, I did some renovations a while back and was able to widen the closet the tank is in to be able to accomodate a standard residential tank, I recently replaced an old 40 gallon with a 50 gallon, just added some extra pilings under the tank to support the weight, the subfloor is 1 1/2" thick. Fortunately my place was originally piped with galvanized and not polybutelene, but that is due for replacement soon.

You need a 3/4" nipple ball valve nipple assembly to drain stubborn water heaters. Just unthread the existing drain valve and quickly thread on your nipple assembly then close the ball valve. Then hook up your transfer pump to the nipple and suck away. I've done it numerous times.

I'm not a plumber but still, if i had to deal with a flat tire then crap like that right afterwards the day would have ended with a news story that said something along the lines of "Florida Man Shoots Water Heater With Shotgun Before Dowsing It Gasoline And Throwing A Lit Match On The Way Out" One day, back when I was in the glass business I tore out every window in an apartment and then realized I was in the wrong damn apartment! It turned out that we were supposed to do that apartment the next day, so long story short it all worked out but I came close to having my "Florida Man" moment that day.

But thanks again for all your videos I've been in similar situations I fill your pain.

I’m in a Modular Home. I am in the middle of changing my water heater. And yes the last person had to make it work. But didn’t put in a cold water shut off. So I will be doing that. And putting unions in. There was a shut off valve on the hot side. And looks like a Union on that side. But could be where they rigged it to work. It doesn’t look to be rocket science but it’s tight as a NASA Space Capsule. The old one is leaking at the bottom and down the whole for the pressure relief line. Why because the main water want shut off completely probably because of settlement. But I am locked on this and want give up. You’ll forgot to say your Knuckles can get skinned wrenches slipping. Tight spaces for these are murder.
