Growing Water Jasmine from Cuttings:
1. Choose a nice section for your cutting. For tropicals like Water Jasmine and Bougainvillea larger stems with bark make great cuttings. Select a healthy parent plant from which to take cuttings.
2. Prepare the Container with a well draining potting mix that is not too dense.
3. Prepare the Cutting by scraping away some bark at the cut end and apply rooting hormone. Rooting hormone is not essential but increases your chances for success.
4. You can propagate in water until roots start to emerge or plant directly in soil. Do not let the roots get too long when in water propagation or you may damage them when planting.
5. Keep the the potting mix damp but not wet and increase humidity by using a spray bottle or covering with plastic bag or lid. This is not essential but increases your chances for success. Keep the cutting in bright indirect light until new leaves start to form.
Water Jasmine, Wrightia Religiosa, is an excellent option for bonsai. It is easy to grow and it grows fast. It likes the sun and plenty of water. It needs good drainage soil and needs regular fertilizing to bring about healthy growth and abundant bloom. It is widely planted as a hedge tree in Southeast Asia countries. Water Jasmine loves the heat and prefers full sun all day. The flowers are small, white, pendulous, and very fragrant.
Once nightly lows begin approaching the 45 F degree mark, it is time to bring Water Jasmine bonsai inside. The ideal indoor location is a south facing window. Artificial grow lights should be used for at least 6+ hours a day in other locations with less sunlight. Also known as Wild Water Plum, Water Jasmine, Wrightia Religiosa Benth.

I am loving working with these so far. After all the leaves fell off the first batch of cuttings I was worried they didn't make it. I was glad to see the roots starting to pop out eventually.

Portulacarias you have to let dry out in order for a cutting to become a new tree. Let the cutting completely dry out and then put it into bonsai soil and don't water it for at least a week. It can take a while for the cutting to start growing new leaves. Also, make sure you do not overwater it or it will develop root rot and die.

No, Water Jasmine is part of the dogbane family and Ficus is part of the fig or mulberry family. Both are tropical though.
