This channel continues to explain to me why vestigial, weird “embellishments” on modern houses look odd, but have a functional and beautiful origin. Neat stuff.

I agree totally with you Brent, especially as I live in a house that was built in 1732. The problems today are in the forgotten details. Keep these vids coming. Karl

Marianne Cusato’s book “Get your House Right” is a great resource. You can get it on Amazon. I would like to hear Brent do a video on it and hear his ideas. I haven’t seen cornice returns done correctly on a single home built in the last 30 years. 100% (except perhaps super high end builders) get it wrong.

Fantastic! I think full thickness brick veneer is going away and being replaced with thin brick veneer which is simply stuck on to the sheathing and some type of grout is used to mimic mortar. These “thin bricks” are actually created by cutting the face off of an actual brick. I think the advantage is that everything is lighter and installation is maybe easier. There is no need for a brick ledge. I think things “ stuck” on to the sheathing is a serious step backwards and can’t imagine it lasting for centuries. I think it was Marianne Cusato that labeled such techniques as “lick and stick”.

Lick and stick! I agree. It is a band aid or a cheap fix that I hope doesn't last. I suspect when they start to fall off, people will understand the problem. Thanks for sharing.

Would love to hear your thoughts on old basements. Our house will be 100 this year, dealing with the basement is a task, water coming in, sump pump, drainage, etc.

Admirably generous of you to share these details. I wonder if old-skool double or triple wythe structural brick isn't the most complex setup to renovate to tightness. Consider that all inside walls will need to be vapor permeable and a dehumidifier probably a must-have.

Another outstanding video! You have convinced me to keep and restore my old windows and I am looking to salvage old windows to replace the vinyl windows with previous owners installed. You are starting to convince me not to replace my siding with fiber cement. The exterior of my ~1910 house needs TLC and I would like to add insulation and zip sheathing to increase energy efficiency and reduce road noise. My plan is to take off the siding, add Rockwool from the outside, add zip, add battens, add siding. When it comes to the windows, I am planning on removing and reinstalling them so I don’t compromise the zip and insulation. A few questions I have are: 1. Where would you recommend finding quality wood siding to replace rotted boards? 2. Would you recommend adding insulation and zip to this home?
@BrentHull
@BrentHull Жыл бұрын
Awesome. Great plan. 1. I would use a western cedar siding. It is the most stable. Vertical grain is best. 2. Yes.

I’m going to be removing and Re-glazing all my windows and I’m going to be unearthing the drip sash (I think I remember the name right) from all of them and making repairs with wood epoxy! Should be a fun time! All thanks to you! 😁 ETA: drip edge* not drip sash 🤦‍♀️

Hi, I see a lot of fake shutters in north america. They don’t even match the size of the windows. In southern Europe (france, spain, italy), shutters are very common and functional. How come they are not used in north america ? In Canada they would help in -20C weather, in Arizona they would help in 40C weather and save a lot of energy, deter thieves and allow people to sleep until 10AM on Sunday. Thanks for the videos ! I’m learning a lot, although I can’t use much of the information given at work, unfortunately. I’m trimming a 2 million dollar house this week with prehung hollow core doors, 1x4 MDF casing and 1x6 MDF baseboard. Sad...
@BrentHull
@BrentHull 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is sad. It is also sad our shutter world. It is messed up and copied poorly. We try to make and install shutters so they are always functional. Thanks for sharing.

@@BrentHull Make the to of the drip edge part of the dovetail so that when it slides int o the dovetail slot there will be no chance of water getting behind the drip edge; no glue or top coat needed to keep water out. What do you think?

How do I make an old window as sound proof as a new window?
@BrentHull
@BrentHull 2 жыл бұрын
I think there are 2 components. The glass and the weather-stripping. Since the glass has the greatest surface area facing a street, it is a big consideration. Interestingly, double pane or insulated glass is actually worse at deadening sound. The best glass is laminated glass. Look for the STC rating, which is a sound transmission number. Compare or google STC ratings for glass and compare it yourself. Second is weather-stripping. Secure your old window with good weather-stripping and it should help you get there. Good luck.

Brent. Sorry, concrete is not a fake product....it has a very long history with us structural engineers....masons....200BC in wide use by the Romans. Like you of course...we also love timber and joinery wherever possible.....it's almost a spiritual thing.

Point taken, I like concrete better when it doesn't pretend to be wood siding. I guess I'm arguing for traditional practices. Thanks for sharing.

Agreed that contemporary homes are built like garbage. But the buyers can’t buy them fast enough. We reward these crap builders. I’m going to be building a home on St George Island next year and I’m doing as much research as I possibly can to make sure we use quality materials and the builder is doing things correctly.
