Been putting up with a noisy and somewhat temperamental solenoid, but then had the water pump fail on my unit forcing my hand and decided to replace both units. Straight forward replacement should take less than 30 minutes if you're taking your time. It goes without saying that you need to disconnect the power before you begin work and make sure there are no water leaks after you are finished. Good luck!
I ordered parts from: www.ereplaceme... That being said, many folks are commenting that the parts are available from breville directly. You get faster shipping time and a better price. Grab the PNs and shoot Breville a call.

It's been years since you posted this, but I just wanted to give a huge thanks. My beloved 870 recently stopped putting out sufficient pressure to pull shots. Thanks to this vid I got a replacement pump and the swap went easily and my machine is now working great again. The pump was only $35 vs. the $270 Breville wanted for sending it in. They also couldn't guarantee that I would get the same machine back and since mine is the Cranberry red that is no longer made, therefore can't be replaced new, I didn't want to chance losing it. Thanks again.

One tip I picked up along the way. If you use a tiny bit of food grade (Notice I said "Food Grade") silicone lube on your "O" rings they will not only go on easier, but they will find their seats and seat/seal better. It also serves to protect the rubber from degradation from heat and moisture. It is also a good idea to use the factory specified parts in all cases including the gauge of the zip ties. May not matter, but then again, you never know. Great video! Thanks for taking the time to help some guy learn this skill for when his own pricey toy takes dive!

Thanks for making this video. I bought my 870XL in 12/2015, and it worked flawlessly until now (8/2019). Last week the machine lost all brewing pressure, and the characteristic noise when first turning it on was missing. I suspected (correctly, as it turned out) that the pump was the culprit. But while you replaced your pump with the ULKA EFP5, which is the original equipment model, I chose the ULKA EAX5, instead. The EAX5 has the same power rating (52W) and the same form factor as the EFP5. The difference is that the EAX5 supports higher pressure and features a brass core, instead of a plastic one. It does need longer off intervals, though. So if you routinely brew several espressos in a row, it might not be the best choice. For me that was no concern, and since it was a lot cheaper on Amazon and available with next day delivery I just went with it. So far, so good.

My machine also is not doing the power on noise. None of the function work (1-cup/2-cup, hot water or steam). Do you think is the pump or the solenoid?
@karwendelman

@@eriskarreci940 I am no expert, so I don't have an answer for you. The symptoms of your machine seem to be consistent with the ones I experienced when my pump failed. I can tell you that my replacement pump has continuned to hold up perfectly since then. So, still no problem with using the ULKA EAX5 instead of the ULKA EFP5. That said, when I had to replace my pump, the EFP5 was a lot more expensive than the EAX5. Presently (12/2022) that doesn't seem to be the case on Amazon in the US.

Great video! The steps you showed in the teardown were helpful in getting my machine opened for repair. Before ordering parts I checked out all the internals and found a clogged line from the boiler to the steam head (what you named the valve block). Cleaned it and tested it before putting it all back together and it works well once more. Thanks again! 👍

Nice instruction video on how to do... I'd like to add in a small comment for anyone new to this type of repair if I may. Take pictures before you take things apart so you will know where it belongs after also pay attention to the solenoid wires because if you mix them up for example the left on the right and the right on the left it will not work correctly the blue don't matter and the green don't matter it's the other two I'm talking about look like orange or red very similar in color. The other wires are more easy to remember and straight forward. One more thing most people don't know about... the two screws that go up under to hold the lid downwards those are "less magnetic" less iron in them so they will not rust out when all the steam hit's them so take either put them aside so you will know where they go or use a small magnet and test them:) I've learned this trick after fixing many of 'em.

This is my second Keurig Coffee Brewer. kzbin.infoUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first one lasted 6 years. It worked beautifully until the day it didn't. It was hard to go back to the drip coffee for a couple of days while I waited on my Keurig to get here. There is a huge difference in the taste. Keurig makes a really good cup of coffee. This new one is a little different from my old one. I find putting the water filter in was easier than on the old one. Attaching the water reservoir was also a little different but once I figured it out, it too was easier. This new one has the auto off feature but is not programmable like the old one. Only three cup sizes instead of four. The odd thing for me was how much lighter in weight this one is compared to my old one. More plastic and much less metal in the construction of this one. The price is so much less than the original Keurig that I bought and the coffee tastes the same so all in all I am satisfied.

If you have poor performance (i.e. low water flow) and no loud buzzing, then make sure to check for blockages due to scale breaking off and clogging the very narrow tubes. A major culprit for this is the last tube on the right as you view the machine from the back. Good luck!

This is an excellent walk-through of how to replace the pump, etc. I was having pressure trouble after years of use and had been anticipating a pump failure. I replaced the pump - would not have know how without this video. Thanks! NOTE: after I replaced the pump my problem was NOT solved so I inspected the inline filter as described in other comments. It seemed clean but I decided to try DE-SCALING the machine. Made two full descale runs and my problem was SOLVED. Maybe I didn't need a new pump in the first place.

Figured since this is the most viewed video about pump replacements, I figured id leave this little tid bit here; A clogged inline filter can also be the culprit and mimic a bad pump and i recommend you check the filter before the pump. I replaced the pump and it was still acting the same which led me to inspect all the tubing for a clog. The inline filter is inbetween the watertank and the flow sensor inside the unit. Its a frosted whitish clear plastic piece with two barbed fittings. Remove the tubing with the filter and blast it with water. I used a waterpik and new pick head to blast water into the filter. Reinstall and see if it helped.

I don't recall seeing that guy, but good tip. There is also another tip below in the comments about using a syringe to pressure water through the pump as scale can lock up the pump as well. Both are easy and free trys before replacing parts and I highly recommend doing both as a first step. I also have a scale video I will be uploading at some point showing where I have found issues in the past.

How to save your pump: 9/10 times, they're not dead, it's the diaphragm that's plugged with scale. Just pick up a 60ml syringe from your local farm supplier (Rona sometimes stocks them) and use it to force a 50/50 vinegar water blend up the uptake tube. Problem solved. Had my Breville 5 years and had to do this 3 times. Each time I was told to replace the pump, and each time I saved myself the repair cost. And oh ya, remove and clean the shower head. You'll soon see chunks of scale come out that you don't want plugging it up and creating too much back pressure.

@antagonizerr
@antagonizerr 4 жыл бұрын
@@martinelocke Yes. The long grey tube that dips into the tank is the uptake. You need a good seal between the syringe and tube tho. I found that it can be removed by a small twist and pull, and the syringe seals perfectly into the rotating elbow it connects to. Force water in, several times if necessary until you see a good amount come out of the shower head and overflow. Make sure you remove the shower head with the one phillips screw and clean it out as well. That bugger gets all sorts of plugged up.

I had the buzzing sound too but it was caused by me not using a stronger decalcifying product. I used Vinegar which my manual told me to use. I spoke with Breville yesterday and they no longer recommend using Vinegar. They suggested I use Dezcal packets (Amazon has it). They instructed me to do the decalcifying twice and then follow up with the tablet "Clean Me" procedure TWO times. When I did this, BOTH my pressure gauge AND my buzzing sound stopped. It was magical. I would do this going forward to prevent the buzzing to come back. Which is will if you do not decalcify it properly

That's a good tip. I appreciate you posting it. Currently when I get an obstruction I have no buzzing just poor flow and pressure. I manually go in and remove the obstruction. Great job. On mine, the steam pressure has stopped a year and two days after buying. And it drips water out of the group head about 15 seconds after switching on. The steam pipe is not blocked. Looking forward to having it repaired - it is a fantastic machine when it works. Update: I fixed the steam by running an entire bottle of white vinegar through cleaning cycle, then flushed with distilled water on two more cycles. (Our tap water has very high mineral content).

Thanks, you got me up and running! I called Breville and they shipped it for $45, it got to me in less than a week. They needed me to provide the Solenoid Block Part Number: SP0020444, they couldn't look it up directly. With the back off looking at the boiler the line to your right on the lower part of the boiler that goes to the end of the solenoid block (also your right) is the one I always fine scale in. usually, just at the boiler side as the tubes are too small to pass the scale. look inside the boiler as well.

These Breville barista espresso machines go well enough for years if you carry out regular de-scaling when the "clean me' light pops on - but even then (and assuming you are using the correct de-scaling solution), over time you are still likely to encounter scale particles which will ultimately jam in the solenoid valve block apertures. The pumps rarely give problems, so you might want to concentrate on cleaning the valve body in the first instance if you are having issues with steaming rather than replacing the entire solenoid valve block. In my experience, 8 times out of 10, the valves will have a small piece of scale holding the valve open when it should be closed.
@lai2703
@lai2703 3 жыл бұрын
My struggle with dealing with scale has been the water source. At home my machine is feed by the filtered water dispenser on the fridge. From time to time I will get scale build up that breaks off and clogs the small plastic lines. I have yet to have scale clog the solenoids or water pump but it is possible with the solenoids at least. My machine at work is fed by a commercial water filter/dispenser and in 7 years of use it has not needed descaling or has it had a single failure. Contrast that with the machine at my home and it has had the two failures (one induced by me) and periodically needing to manually clean out scale that has become lodged in the lines. ALWAYS check for blockage before replacing parts.

Wonderful job Luis! I have the same machine and color. Our machine is 1 1/2 yrs old and we use it morning and noon EVERYDAY. My problem is with extraction and maybe you have the answer. I buy our vanilla syrup and beans from Starbucks and they grind it “Esspresso Grind” for me as they have done every two weeks for the last 1 1/2 yrs. After filling/tamping and putting the porter filter in place our machine comes on as normal, no unusual sounds, the pressure gauge starts out in the pre-infusion range briefly and then moves up 12-1 o’clock as usual. I’ve always tamped and used the double basket but for the last week now I’m only getting dripping (I’ve even tried not tamping and have the same dripping) and not the steady caramel stream I used to get. When placing an empty basket and testing water flow it comes thru perfect, when removing porter filter completely the water comes out perfect and when in cleaning cycle the water comes thru perfect. Can you help me?
@lai2703
@lai2703 5 жыл бұрын
The double wall filter is designed to give one good pressure by the nature of its design (also known as a pressurized basket). It is designed to give one the ability to use preground coffee, as you have done, and get consistent results. That being said, I am surprised you have found that to be the case. You can almost ignore the pressure gauge as anything placed in the pressurized basket is going to get you what looks like good pressure. If this started with this latest batch of coffee, I am confident in pointing out that the grind is likely the culprit here. My recommendation is to switch to the single wall filter, grind your own coffee, and enjoy the wonderful espresso you've been missing out on these past 18 months. The are numerous grinders out there that do a better job than the Barista Express; however, all those grinders cost more than the complete Breville combo. Furthermore, the level of control that the conical burr grinder gives you shouldn't be possible at this price point. I pull an average of 10 shots per day and have done so over the last 4 years. While I would love a more expensive machine I don't think the results would differ so greatly than what I am able to accomplish with my Breville. If you are intimidated by grinding your own coffee don't be. You'll be able to enjoy a richer espresso than what you thought possible. And finding the right grind/dose is as easy as turning a dial and pulling a few shots. If buying roasted whole beans is what is hanging you up then I wouldn't worry about that either. You can purchase from Starbucks if you so chose or the many online roasters available. I purchase my beans from Costco. Some might consider that a sin, but they have lots of options, I get freshly roasted beans, and by buying it in a five pound bag I go through it before it goes stale (2 weeks) while not having to pick up a new one pound bag two or three times a week.

Luis Infante Thank you for your help. I did go back to Starbucks and had them grind another bag at a courser grind,1/2 way between Espresso and paper ground (#4 on their dial I believe). I mixed the courser with my existing espresso grind and now again able to pull my wonderful extractions. The manager thinks perhaps someone mistakenly dialed a “French” grind (an even finer grind) rather than espresso on my original purchase. I’m happy I didn’t have to throw out the mishap grind and was able to have a positive outcome mixing the two grinds. Again, Thank you for great videos and help!

Looks like the link in the description for the block is still good (just back ordered), but yeah the pump seems to have been discontinued. That really sucks. Unfortunately, I don't have another line on the parts. Some have had success getting the parts from Breville but it seems you ran into a rep that did not want to play nice. Wait a minute....I plugged the PN into AMazon and www.amazon.com/Model-120v-minutes-Breville-Espresso/dp/B077ZRP3GD/ref=asc_df_B077ZRP3GD/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=241902529327&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3319218621328892771&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9007577&hvtargid=pla-400240592562&psc=1 It looks like the right one! Just FYI the newer 870XL just has one screw next to the water inlet and 2 screws on the bottom. The whole back pops out. First time around I removed the bottom feet and the bottom pan but that wasn't necessary. There are 3 clips on each side and the bottom ones are more stubborn. This makes removing the water inlet much worse but I didn't remove mine as I just disassembled my flow meter, checked it and put it back together again. At least for the short term my flow meter is working again. Removing that part will require more disassembly (I'm not sure how involved).

Im in the UK and for me to send my 870XL to a Sage recommended repair centre to change the solenoid will cost me around £130! I read another comment where someone took the solenoid off and soaked it in descale solution, I think I will try this first before ordering a new one. What do you think of this idea and did it not occur to you to give this a try first?

I broke the solenoid down when I first diagnosed that to be a problem and there really wasn't any scale built up. Nevertheless, I took some Scotch Brite and cleaned it up. This seemed to help a bit but was only good enough to work if I pulled shots before steaming milk. When the pump went out on me I decided to change it all out at one time since I was ordering parts.

Hi, It was that notoriously clogged tube. I wasn't able to get the back off as couldn't find the other 2 screw retainers, so had to work from the top - not easy at all and nearly impossible! After clearing the solidly blocked tube and putting it back in, the machine still had the same problem until I added a strong dose of citric acid to the water tank and ran the machine briefly, then sucked at the aperture with a straw in case of an air lock again and kept doing that every 20 mins for an hour or two. Then the machine suddenly changed its pump noise and hot water gushed through, much to my relief as I spent hours on it. So, yes you're right, there was likely scale in other tubes as well as the one everyone gets problems with. And that tube as a part is not easy to find, it seems. Luckily I got mine clean but had to soak it in citric acid and struggle with a needle and uncurled paperclip for an hour or two, bit by bit chipping away the solid build up both ends.

Thank you brother for taking the time and teaching us this critical repair. You are a natural teacher and your expertise is much appreciated. Quick question, I developed low pressure problem with my Breville Barista Exp., recently. The machine is 4 years old, and before the low pressure started, there was this strange buzzing vibration sound when I pressed the single or double brew buttons. I know it is hard to describe the sound in a text but the sound is abnormal. Is that what you were hearing, because I don’t want to open up and order all these parts and end up with the same problem! Not that I am asking you to diagnose but is there a way or test I can do to make sure it is the solenoid. I am getting some crema but the pressure needle doesn’t move. I must add, the problem got worse after I descaled with a Durgol solution instead of my normal vinegar solution! Thank you in advance and looking forward to hearing from you
@lai2703

Tough to say without hearing and or seeing the machine, but I think you might just have a scale issue. The two lines that go into/out of the boiler should be checked. I often find scale broken off and stuck there. It is possible your solenoid is toast, but I would check for scale in the lines and or ports before performing major surgery and spending $$$. Good luck!

It could be the solenoid block, but more than likely is just some calcium deposits (scale) that have broken off and blocked one of the small lines. Go back in and check that they are all free of any obstructions and make sure and look inside the ports to for material. Right at the boiler is where I usually find issues.

Hi, thanks for the video. When i turn on my 870XL, the power-on noise is not buzzing anymore. None of actions work. No coffee brewed, no steam, no hot water. What could be failure? The pump or the solenoid? A few months ago, an elbow tube on the solenoid was leaking, I could not find the tube, so I changed the whole solenoid assembly to fix the leak. So the solenoid is fairly new.

Sounds like the pump is either locked up or failed. However, you can't rule out that it isn't getting power and or the board or some other circuit has failed.

Hi, Got a BES870 used and sold as condition unknown in an auction. Initially no water flowed at all. Put a straw in the water inlet aperture and sucked and got some water flow but not much. Also tried that technique of removing and replacing the reservoir quickly with the machine on and hot water in the water tank. This seemed to affect the noise the pump made at times, as if something was improving, and the occasional drip from the water outlet did drip more, even quite a bit more sometimes and there's pressure if I put my finger on the (hot!) water outlet pipe, but I couldn't get beyond that stage despite a few hours of trying. I also notice a lot of water collects in the tray area, presumably from the outlet inside the machine or diffuser. Pretty expensive round here to get the machine checked and diagnosed, and then the repair cost on top of that. Does it sound like it could be a really bad air lock or maybe something else given that quite a lot of water after 2 hours of trying with the straw accumulated in the tray? Also, I can't get the rear cover off -- there are 5 screws at the back on the side but just 1 instead of 3 on the horizontal part of the rear cover. I have tried some force to unclip it but the unclipping at the top does not seem to release the panel so I can remove it. I wonder if there are other screws somewhere to release the back cover that the reservoir slips to? Videos on YT show 3 screws at the back, mine has just 1.
@lai2703

Hi there. Diagnosis over the internet is tough. What I will tell you is I killed my pump by turning the machine on without the reservoir in place. With no water flow I would it could be the pump, but if you're getting water in the drip tray and good sounds from the pump then I would think that's not the case. I would first look to see if it's a scale issue causing blockages in the small lines. If no blockages then the next avenue I would explore is a faulty solenoid(s). Good luck and apologies for the delayed reply.

Hi there, thank you for posting such a detailed video! I have the older Barista Express 860XL. Your video has helped me decide the solenoid is tempermental and needs replacement. What's forcing my hand is that the steam just stopped working in the last couple days. I can still run espresso, albeit sometimes with that terrible solenoid failure grinding noise... but when I turn the machine on, I don't get the familiar grumbles, just a quiet hum. And steam pressure is non-existant, and no pulsing noise of the pump (?). Does that sound like I should replace both solenoid and pump?
@lai2703
@lai2703 5 жыл бұрын
Does the machine pour hot water if you select that function? I'm not familiar with the 860 and any difference it might have but on the 870 you turn the steam switch towards the back of the machine for hot water vs forward for steam. If you get neither hot water or steam, then likely the solenoid has failed or is jammed. Especially if you have the loud buzzing accompanying. that being said, look for scale built up in the small feeder tubes before replacing any parts if you are having flow issues. This is a common issue with these machines. I have a video in the works on this.

This is an awesome video! I will be doing the exact same thing once I can locate the part. It doesn't look like the full assembly is available anymore, so I was hoping to get some specs on the individual solenoids as I may be able to just replace those on the existing assembly. Do you think that's possible? Is there any info on the silver stickers on the side that would be relevant in finding the correct replacement part? Thanks!
@lai2703
@lai2703 5 жыл бұрын
Totally possible to replace individual parts, but it is a little more involved. Also, make sure it is not a scaling issue that has you bound up. The right most pipe coming off the boiler/group is the culprit I've most had issue with in the past. Popping it out and clearing the blockage fixes the issue, but I also like to grab a small straw and rig it up with a vacuum to suck out anything that might be loose in the port/group. In regards to availability it shows backorder, but that comes off at times and you have to check back frequently to see its availability. I too ran into backorder status and even had a delay once I placed the order as it showed in stock but at some point came off in-stock status and delayed my order. Hopefully, that is clear and answers your questions. ETA: If you're experiencing the same solenoid issue as I was this is the solenoid that failed for me. Be careful not to tear any of the o-rings as then you may have a leak post repair. www.ereplacementparts.com/solenoid-valveolab-9200h-p-629957.html

Apologies for the late reply. I've saw your comment, but have been really busy. The water for cleaning may work with less volume or it has been my experience that a partially clogged tube might allow enough water through to make the machine appear to function fine without a loaded portafilter. I keep saying I'm going to post my video about cleaning out scale debris, but other things keep taking priority. Long story short I think you have a partial clog of your lines due to a piece of scale breaking. Pull the lines where they enter the boiler (it's likely the one closest to the grinder, i.e. the lower one) and check for scale both in the tube and in the thermocoil comp assembly (breville's term not mine 😉). Good luck!

Found your video while trying to figure out why our Seal Shower Head keeps dislodging about 1/2 to 3/4 through a shot being pulled. Water comes down and out over the portafilter making for a very watery espresso shot. We can really only pull a semi-decent shot if we barely tamp down on the espresso - but it always stays in the pre infusion state. This machine is barely 2 to 2 1/2 years old? Any idea why the seal shower head/steam ring would dislodge while pulling a shot?

Apologies for the delayed response. If I am understanding your situation correctly the seal itself might be damaged. On a machine that young I wouldn't think that is the case, but it fits the description. At least the one I purchased and installed causes this to happen. Good luck!

@@Robdutton91 in my experience the scale breaks off and clogs the line, but doesn't "trap" the line. however, the rubber o-ring on the brass end does tend to be tricky to dislodge and reinsert. once the retention clip is out you can try a pocket screwdriver in that slot ad try to nudge the brass bit to break loose. only need a little bit of movement. If that doesn't work, you could also try pulling the other end of the line and then spinning the line in clockwise or counterclockwise directions to see if that o-ring will break it's seal. the longer rubber sits the less likely it wants to come out. The line closest to the grinder is almost always the one I have scale in. concentrate on that one.

That's what I assume to be a temperature sensor and I am also assuming that is some type of thermal conductive compound. At least, that's what I recall going of memory. But to more specifically answer your question, I do not know what that is. Best I got is my assumption. Good luck with your repair. Hey amazing video. Was just about to follow your guide, but looks like the solenoid and pump you linked to off ereplacement parts indicate they are back-ordered with no indication from the manufacturer (Brevile) to continue producing them. On Amazon I found the "EFP5" pump when searching 870xl with pump, but nothing for a solenoid. I was wondering if you know where else parts for this unit might be available, or if there are any equivalents that can be used to Frankenstein it back together.
@lai2703
@lai2703 5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, that was the best site I found when I originally searched back in 2015 or 16 when the solenoid started giving me issues. It has gone on and off of backorder many, many times since then and probably before that too. The tall solenoid on the right as you view the machine from the back is available and in stock. That is the one that failed on my unit. www.ereplacementparts.com/solenoid-valveolab-9200h-p-629957.html I would make sure and check for blockages due to scale breaking off and plugging the lines. The one I have had most issue with in the past is the right most line that comes off the boiler/group. Good Luck!

@lai2703
@lai2703 4 жыл бұрын
If you replaced the block you can steal the o-rings from the connections there. It's very easy to nick the o-rings when installing the hoses. Alos, you might want to use a light rub of vaseline on the o-rings when installing them to ease their entry.
@default9740

Skye, run the machine with the back off to identify exactly which one is leaking. You may have a pinhole in a hose. Be very careful not to touch any live wires with the machine energised and the back off!

I originally took the solenoid apart and cleaned it up a bit with scotch brite pad. This helped a touch, but if the machine got too hot the solenoid would act up. Perhaps yours is more of a scale issue, but I think the magnet in mine was just weak/defective.

First thing I would check are the lines running to the boiler. These thin plastic lines clog very easily with bits of scale. A majority of failures are going to be blockages. Check that first.

In the description there are links for buying the parts replaced; however, I'm not sure that your solenoid block has failed. If no hot water from your machine maybe the selector valve is malfunctioning or failed. The parts associated with this are: 04.1; 13.6; 12.5. Some say they are discontinued. If you find any of these to be the culprit give breville a call with the PN and see if they have it. FWIW, this is a part I am apprehensive about failing on my two machines. We changed out this part (successfully, we thought) and somehow a lot of water sprayed out inside when pulling a shot. We realized it by seeing water seep out underneath and upon opening it back up there were signs of water all over. We can’t tell if the right side of the valve actually broke when reaching a tool through to secure the metal panel on. It wiggles a little and is not as solid as the original metal part (which has more heft than the new, also). We’re going to dry it out and put the old part back on but we’re concerned about what to do next.
@lai2703
@lai2703 3 жыл бұрын
You might try leaving the new block in if you don't see it broken (I'm unclear if it is from what you wrote), leaving the top off and turning the machine (with full reservoir). Using a flashlight you might be able to tease out where the leak is coming from. Might just be a line that's not seated all the way or a nicked o-ring. If the latter you can steal some o-rings from the original valve block. I believe there are three you can use from there.

I don't mind at all. I use tap water filtered through my fridge. I know, I should have a better filter setup, but the wife would likely kill me. The water we have in our area is in shale and this leads to tons of scale issues. Folks with copper pipes have it real bad and develop tons of pinhole leaks. Anyhow, yeah, the water seems to do okay. One thing I have done that I think helps is flushing the group after pulling my last shot-i.e. dump the puck, reinsert the portafilter, then run a single shot of water through it, and finally wipe the group down. I've had little to no success with white vinegar solution and the clean cycle. I had some scaling issues and they were bad and causing some flow issues. However, it was only in the group and I used a vacuum to suck out what I could after using a pick to clean up as much as I could. Tip, I used a drinking straw attached to the vacuum to get into such a small edifice.

Hi, great video! Thanks a lot. My machine worked great for years then after a routine backflush the pressure gauge went nuts (back and fourth) so I stopped the cleaning process and there was a lot of pressure when I slowly released the Porto filter. Since then I haven't been able to pull a good shot and during the pre infusion there's often more espresso coming out before the shot starts. The pressure gauge also shows low pressure at pre infusion then jumps up to optimal range. I've changed around grind, dose, weight etc. Always a similar result. I've resorted to manually doing everything but it's still nowhere near as good as it once was. I had the loud buzzing sometime after this happened but after a lot of cleaning with vinegar I haven't heard it for a long time. Frothing and hot water work as they should and I only use fresh beans. Any thoughts on what could be happening? Cheers

Sounds like a blockage. It is so common with how hard most water sources are if you're not using a good filtration system. I get them from time to time with this machine and I am using filtered water from my fridge. The machine I have at work runs through a much nicer filtration system and I have yet to have an issue with that unit. I bought the unit in the video about 12 months after the unit that I have not had an issue with. The lines going into the boiler normally clog and can cause issues with the steam wand, hot water, and group. Pop them off and check to make sure there isn't some calcium stuck in them partially obstructing flow. Good luck!

Yes. It very well could be the solenoid that is not functioning or is clogged up. I would recommend pulling the lines to see if they are blocked at all and you might give disassembling the solenoid. When mine originally started giving me issues I did just that and it got much better, though, the noise persisted even if it was less audible. When I burned up the pump I decided to do the block at the same time since I was in there. Good luck!!!

I just replaced the water pump and solenoid block and still have a low pressure issue. The only way i can get the pressure to go up to max is by inserting both the cleaning puck and a piece of plastic bag underneath- the cleaning puck alone won't indicate pressure on the gauge. I am completely stumped :/ the lines have no blockages either
@lai2703
@lai2703 4 жыл бұрын
Wow. That's really frustrating. What I have experienced when I have water flow and low/no pressure there is a blockage somewhere. If no water at all then it is possible that the pump has failed. I wish I could be of more help, but your symptoms lead me to think blockage.
@lifeonbicycles

@@lai2703 interestingly enough water flows through quite quickly through the cleaning puck with a single wall filter- it just doesnt build pressure hence why i am stumped. Water goes through the espresso puck quicky but no pressure. It is almost like it is just puking water through the boilder and out of the machine without allowing pressure to build up
@lai2703
@lai2703 4 жыл бұрын
Again, that sounds like a blockage, which are almost always a partial blockage IME. Water can flow in and through, but won't build pressure because there is not enough source to meet the requirements of what is needed for proper pressure, but you will still see plenty of water. If that makes sense. Are you measuring how much water is being pulled? For reference, my machine is setup to pull 2oz of espresso if I'm doing everything correctly (I normally am). When I pull just water, i.e. no coffee in the portafilter, it will pull 3oz of water. When I have a blockage I get nowhere near that. Maybe 1 or 1.5oz. Now, if you're getting that amount of water then it doesn't make any sense why you wouldn't get any pressure with the proper grind.

@@lai2703 i fixed it!! For anyone else with a similar issue- CHECK YOUR GRINDER FIRST. I was convinced that the finest setting was good enough for the espresso shot, but it was not. I took the machine apart and reseated the grind dial so it could go even finer (for example, the burr setting that was "finest" is now #4 on the dial). The pressure is now fine. It appears that my machine had both a bad solenoid block and the burrs were worn down.
