Watch Part 1 here: • Water Purification Tab...
An experiment testing water purification tablets on lake water, and examining the water through a microscope and a petri dish. The tablets are only effective against microbes and not heavy metals and chemicals.
The medium used for the petri dish was tryptic soy agar. The dish was incubated for 24 hours at 37 degrees Celsius.
Camera - Nikon D3300
Microscope - Leica ATC 2000
Microscope magnification of each shot is shown in the bottom right hand corner.

As you mentioned in the first video, and it's mentioned by all the scientific papers and usually by the tabs instructions as well, they describe that in emergency situations the first step is to filter the water, using a mill bag, a feminine swab, an improvised filter made from grass, pebbles, sand, charcoal, etc., and only then use some kind of disinfection procedure/device.

Could you try this out with a selfmade gravity filter as they are taught in survival classes? They consist of three layers. Layer one is a fine fabric, layer 2 consists of gravel & sand, layer 3 consists of leftover charcoal (e.g. from a campfire). I would really be interested in seeing how well this method works.
@capitalismsucks9590

My same question. I was planning on doing this, having a micron filter on top with gravel layer and sand layer and charcoal stick layer, with another micron filter on bottom. Then boil the collected water.
@sexwax4191
@sexwax4191 2 жыл бұрын
@Rich Moore the reason for the three layers is to mitigate the clogging issue in more polluted water. Also it is a 'standard' filtering scheme for survival situations, where you only have basic materials. Of course, having better equipment one can and should optimize the setup.

Thats meant to filter out particulates not bacteria.
@Templarfreak
@Templarfreak 2 жыл бұрын
as round lee says, this setup is not really meant to disinfect, just filter out large particulates. after doing a bit of cursory research, it seems like it may be possible to modify this setup by adding an additional layer of activated charcoal, or filter the water through activated charcoal after you filter out particulates (and then filter out the activated charcoal in the previous filter afterwards). this could potentially last you through a decent amount of filterings without needing to disinfect the water by boiling it every single time, as well, but this is all mostly conjecture from doing a bit of googling lol not entirely sure what kinds of processes you'd have to go through to make activated charcoal in the wilderness, but it shouldnt be that much different or more difficult than making it at your own home.

Can't see it doing much apart from removing the largest particles. A coffee filter is only intended to filter out grounds. They wouldn't much use if your coffee came out as just water on the other end, after all.

This makes me wonder if one were to take your turbid water from the first experiment, run it through a crude filter (a clean T-shirt or dish towel, for example), and then try the purification tablets again, would they be more effective? And if so, would they be effective enough?

@DRMrThi

It was estimated that the human life expectancy millions ago was very short (about 30 years), so I don't think it got that weaken but also I agree partially because medicine evolved so much that even people with weaken immune system can survive, so natural selection isn't working that much now

I.e. do you have 3 agar plates of lake water and 3 agar plates of treated lakewater? I think that would help people understand the scientific process a bit more. Also, you can count the colonies so that you can show people something more quantitative rather than qualitative. I think it would be very educational.
