I use this as a jumping off point to talk about Florida geologic history, water supply and human impact in a high school Environmental Science class. I connect it to Chapter 4 of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. It's a great way to lead into the growing Florida population, water demands and the sinkholes that are increasing in western Florida.
