Saw the video of Captain Joe a few hours ago. Same topic, but I really like that both of you have also different aspects. I like, that you also talk about the possible problems and errors that can happen with a water salute. I hope the costs of the firefighter who pressed the "foam" button were covered by the airport that staged the water salute. What I heard from an airplane technician a few years ago, the costs can be very high instantly if you make a simple mistake, but are covered by the company/ insurance.

Yes, I would assume that the insurance would cover this. Accidents do happen.

I definitely think Mentour Pilot AND Captain Joe both deserve a water salute, for all their awesome educational work on youtube, I'm no pilot, and never will be, and that's ok, BUT, I have been doing some oil paintings on aviation, currently completing a 737 NG flightdeck oil painting (ahaha don't ask why, I just felt like doing it), however I ran into a problem, as I'm painting on each switch and dial and button etc etc, I suddenly stopped and thought, 'what does that button ACTUALLY do, what is its purpose', so here I am painting stuff without a clue on what it is, that was until I stumbled across Mentour's and Joe's videos, they have a huge variety of useful stuff, which has helped me understand a lot more about aviation, and on completion of these paintings, if anyone asks me about them (and they probably will), I will be able to tell them about it all, and this is all thanks to these 2 awesome blokes, taking time out of their busy schedule to give us the basics on aviation, keep up the great work guys :)

There is also a similar tradition in the German airforce. But they do it a little different. The pilots sit on a chair on a cart dragged by a service vehilce or a small truck. Than the pilot(s) themself not only there aircraft gets showerd after there first or last flight during abroad deployment. Or at there first or last flight in a squadron or aircraft type. Usually its only one fire truck following the cart the pilots are on. Sometimes the mechanics crews build models of the aircraft they use for the pilot to sit on.

For what it's worth, I am a long retired industrial engineer, who supported navigation avionics production implementation for a large airframe manufacturer. If memory serves, the most well publicized 'water cannon salute', in the early 1990's involved a retiring American Airlines captain. For several years after the aforementioned event, whenever anyone from our "Mid Atlantic" office retired, received a promotion, or 'left for greener pastures', they would be forced to 'run the gauntlet' of thirty-plus employees, each with excellent aim, blasting them with cheap water pistols, as they were forced to run a 'zig-zag pattern' towards their vehicle. Truthfully, I believe that the only 'victims' who became disappointed, were those who failed to get totally soaked.
@kevjones14346 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I have always wondered where this tradition originated from. A Firefighter friend of mine did it it for a Red Arrows Pilots final flight last year which was a nice touch, but I never knew where the tradition came from. Your point about cold soak fuel makes perfect sense too. I have to admit I laughed out load about the foam ''unpleasantness' and i bet he or she ended up being teased by their co workers. Thanks again for another great video.

Hello Mentour!! This is Emmanuel from Argentina living in Ecuador Thank you very much for all the excellent job that you have been doing during these years. There is no more honorable work than sharing knowledge with others. That´s what make us evolve. I´ve seen all your videos and wish to some day become a pilot. Please could youy make at least a short video about the new Airbus A220-300? Is it composite? Please could you talk about pros & cons about composite made aircrafts? And the last: Please could you tell us more about landing gears? different types in different aircrafts, brakes, tires, axles, suspensions, materials, models, etc. are there many aircraft models with the same landing gear? why some are more slanted than others? do you know how does the brake system do to equilibrate the braking power to each gear in heavy and super aircrafts? are they independent or there is a common hydraulic system? why in some hard touch down we can see the landing gear shaking and not in others? in some hard breaking manouvers tires may fire up. at witch temperature and why? just because of temerature increasing or the heat may damage some hose or somethig? does the brakes start the fire? I gess you have a lot of info about. Again thank you, and I will be asking for more. Take care of yourself and see you next time bye bye!

@tf51d6 жыл бұрын
The one problem I have with water salutes is when they do it in declared drought areas. For example California, both SFO and LAX areas, have had drought conditions for years, and are always subject to brush fire dangers. yet I've seen a number of water salute videos at LAX and SFO. A homeowner can't water their lawns, but it's ok to waste 3000gal of water shooting it over an airliner. At least they seemed to get the message at SFO as the latest ones I've seen are dry salutes, where they have the fire equipment in place, but don't actually spray the water. Hopefully LAX and all other airports in drought areas will do the same.
@B2BWide6 жыл бұрын
tf51d Think another aspect, too. Firefighters must do their job even in the most severe drough. They also must maintain efficient equipment at all times. They must test their equipments efficiency time to time. If it is a water salute that is not _that_ waste. I accept your point of view, but if it has a safety benefit, too, then it is not _that_ big waste. I wish you all the best, and you have my sympathy. I have friends in Santa Fe who told me about how severe it was...
@ralfoide6 жыл бұрын
One thing is that SFO sits next to the bay. There's plenty of water around. The drought limitation is about using potable house water (which typically comes from the Sierras hundreds of miles away via the Hetch Hetchy aqueduc system) to end up watering one's car or lawn. Fire fighting in SF uses recycled water instead.

Another risk airports have to take into account when planing a water salute: how the people in the area might feel about water being used that way. SJC learned that the hard way when British Airways started service there during a drought. A drought bad enough that everyone was being told to reduce their water usage by 30%.
