I have a 20 year old passion fruit vine in a container with soil. I wonder if your pots are big enough because my container is pretty big , about 5 times bigger than one of yours as far as I can tell from the video. Yes, it’s quite old , has a trunk the size of my arm, produces fruit, a soft orange color South American variety also called “water lemon”. Like you I love the fruit. All the best, love your channel.

Maybe consider the longevity of these products that are left out in the environment as from my experience they often get water inside the electronics and fail despite their packaging information assurance that they are weather proof.

Definitely look up IP ratings. If they're certified for the correct rating you should be able to drop them to the bottom of the ocean. Most items will be certified for some level of dust and light spray, which isn't going to be very useful in general outdoor environments

barbs leak less when you hold the shape of the 13mm pipe as you push the barbs into them, dont let pushing the barb deform/squish the black pipe, for better sealing. I noticed that after years of drip irrigation

Hoocho, I really enjoy your videos and am looking forward to getting into hydroponic growing. A couple of questions with your outdoor systems. Do you do anything to minimize dilution of the nutrients from your grow medium for when it rains? How does the addition of the rain water impact the moisture sensor and delivery of the nutrients? Do you cover the grow medium with anything such as plastic or mulch to help retain the moisture?

Probably should cover the hoses to avoid them heating up. I got a dingo trencher to trench down to 300mm for my orchard and plumbed the setup with 7 solenoids and found a 32 drop garden irrigation timer on gumtree (though may replace the system with a raspberry pi as the programs are really for lawns). I would like to look at feedback of each plant to see how wet it is - I got a rain sensor on the timer to not water if get 20mm of rain. But I do have issues with the various drip systems I have setup - some plants are drowning while others dying of thirst (have had to add extra drip hose and in some cases pushed in some variable sprayers/drippers). I was looking at capacitive sensors but power is not to the plants just to the solenoids 24v ac, other than solar and those commercial battery with a dicky solar panel usually only last 6 months or so. I do like the trellis idea and will have to look out for the hollman wifi/ble system. I still got plans though my reo is rusting away daily to put up a wall to hide my black rain water tanks with passion fruit/grapes etc this hollman product may do the job - Also you had some other waterless system some time ago running off a 44G drum for citrus from memory - how did that go?

Hey Hoocho, thanks for the good content. I have a question which i have always wondered. The effects of draining hydroponics nutriens into the grid water system and or draining directly into soil (which is how i understand your drain to waste system). I know that phosphorus and nitrogen accumulation into the soil will make it infertile (to much of everything is a toxin) and it can also affect the ground water. Especially the Phosphorus. Hydroponic nutrients are very rich in said elements and i really wonder what your thougts and experiences are on that matter.

They are less rich then standard fertilizer, and in soil the latent plant life will consume them before they can run off. Farm run off is not a concern with a system like this. He will actually increase fertility by doing it in his case. There will be zero accumulation.

Nicely done - BTW: for BT range problems you may consider building up a BT extender with an ESP32 (no other components - just the code) and place it somewhere in between - handy for those weak BT signals if you run Home Assistant or the like. Cheers,

Awesome video as usual. Just wondering in winter, if there is a lot of rain, the nutrients will not be sent to the plants as the moisture stays high. How would you keep feeding the plants in this case?

I’d bury a wicking container under each pot, utilising the hole you’ve already made. Only when they have started to empty would the moisture sensors trigger additional watering which would then not be waste as would drain into the buried mini-reservoirs. Can’t stand idea of wasting any nutrient solution personally. Love the use of the sensors though 😊

I look forward to seeing the harvest! I was wondering if you would consider propagating the passion fruit and putting pots on the opposite side as well so when they passion fruit grows it could meet in the middle?🥰❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦

I have a lot of trouble with the droppers and 4mm tubing getting blocked with accumulated feeding nutrients. I use pumps and even with pressure things grind to a halt or are reduced. Anyone know the best solution to this, apart from pulling things apart every so often.
@tradermunky1998

I would not call this a true drain to waste. True drain to waste uses hydroponic media, full strength solution, and waters/drains several times a day keeping the moisture near 100%. The goal is to always provide the plants near perfect nutrient levels, even more so than a regular hydroponic system as it drains waste instead of recirculating it. This is more of a fertilizer watering system that kicks on at a moisture level and turns off at another. If you're using full strength fertilizer water you will probably get salt build up without occasionally drenching with pure water or rain as I don't think stopping it at 60% will be enough to remove the salts through the waste part of drain to waste. Anyways, best of luck!

By coffee plants we are talking about cherry trees right? Or is this a different plant called a coffee plant? If it's an Arabica cherry it's hard to get them to thrive at lower altitude. Less of a problem with a Robusta Tree but still a factor. We grow them here above 2000 feet.

How is it really hydroponics if you’re just watering pots even if it is with rainwater or catch water or just a basin you feel up you’re still just watering pots. Seems like we call it hydroponics to make herself feel good but it’s just the same old pot watering systems that we’ve always had just a little improved.
