I'm a newbie at car detailing. I was a Chemist in my past career and now I own a pressure washing business and have decided to expand into car detailing. With just 3 months experience in detailing I did notice several water spots on a car I detailed today. I am self taught meaning that everything I know about detailing have primarily come from watching your videos. Living in Florida means we have hard water. To reduce that I add a small amount of McKee's N-914 or Absolute to my wash bucket making the water a bit 'softer'. I use McKee's or Absolute as my rinseless wash and lubricant prior to my main wash, which P&S Pearl is my shampoo of choice that has provided great results. I then proceed to rinse car and then apply a wax such as TW Wax & Dry, TW Graphene Flex, TW Seal N Shine allowing me to wax and dry the car at the same time. Then I apply P&S Bead Maker and Dream Maker mix to provide that extra gloss and hydrophobics. (As you can tell I like TW and P&S products but also have Carpro and Gyeon in my arsenal). I would think that this combination would help eliminate water spot formation. Is this the correct order to apply the wax first and then the Bead Maker afterwards or am I doing too many steps and wasting product? I assume applying the wax would provide the gloss and UV protection and the Bead Maker mix the hydrophobics and additional gloss afterwards, thus reducing the chances of water spot removal and making maintenance washes easier. Any advice you can give to a rookie would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great videos.
@PanTheOrganizer10 ай бұрын
Hi James. There's a lot to digest in your text here hehe. I will try my best to give you some guidance. First, you would not use the TW Graphene Flex Wax or ICE Seal N Shine after each wash. Those are durable protectants and you run the risk of streaking and other issues if you use them too often. Once every 4 months or so for Seal N Shine is acceptable, and once every 6 months for Flex Wax. For drying aids when you are done washing your car in weekly washes, use something lighter like the TW Wax & Dry, or the TW Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Wet Wax, or Bead Maker + Dream Maker mix, or CarPro Elixir or Gyeon Ceramic Detailer, etc. Those are light sprays meant for regular use. Regular washes and use of drying aids really will help prevent accumulation of water spots, but that still won't necessarily be the "be all end all" solution, if you have hard water. The best way to prevent it all together is get a water deionizer setup to add to your water source. A simple DIY setup like I did in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3yxfWSZnaaEjrssi=HaQS_00oZ5dS3ZkN As the water will have ZERO minerals after going through the deionizer, you should have a 100% spot free finish each time. And since you're planning on starting your detailing business, I have a bunch of cool videos that can help you out. There are filters out there that contain a special resin that completely remove all minerals from the water. I bought one 12 months ago off ebay for $110.00 Australian dollars and can rinse my black car in the hot sun and have zero water spotting issues! I use a fine cleanable sediment filter prior to the resin filter to prolong the life of the filter. Absolutely the best investment ever for car washing.The actual cartridges can be refilled with fresh resin, which you can buy in bulk, once you start to notice any return of water spots. I think the window cleaning people were on to this system quite a while back. Hope this helps everyone with this annoying problem!

Pan, in the Gulf Coast area of Texas, just parking to go shopping this time of the year (September), there are early afternoon showers/rain/thunderstorms with temperatures of 85F (29.4C). The precipitation can last only 10 minutes and by the time I get back to the car, a lot of the water has already dried. Even though water spots are an enemy of ceramic coatings, I can’t wait to ceramic coat my vehicle. Hopefully, a short drive on the freeway might get more of the water off the car. For water spots on glass, I’ve used a scouring / cleaning powder from the kitchen called “Barkeepers Friend”. I learned about this from a window washer forum when I decided to clean the windows on my parents’ house. The Barkeepers Friend has some oxalis acid that helps with removing the etched in water stains. That would be an option for water spots on glass in addition to the vinegar & distilled water wash and doesn’t have the annoying acetic acid vinegar odor.

Amazing video! I will test it tomorrow. I found 3 water spots today on my spoiler. Tried green star on pre wash step nothing, tried again with different dilution after the iron remover in the end nothing again.
@PanTheOrganizer5 ай бұрын
Green Star is an all purpose cleaner. It's not meant to remove minerals from water spots. The same applies to the iron remover. Iron removers are only meant to remove brake dust (iron particles). Not water spots. When water evaporates, it leaves behind minerals. Those minerals are acidic and can start etching through the clear coat if left unattended, especially in the baking hot sun. The best remedy is to wash the car more often. And use a water deionizer setup if you can. That has ZERO minerals in it, so you could even let the car air dry, and you would never get water spots. The next step up is to use a water spot remover. Ones like DIY Detail Water Sport Remover, CarPro Spotless 2.0 Gyeon Water Spot Remover, etc. Pretty much all big coating brands have them. You would wash your car first, then use the water spot remover. Always use on a clean surface. Then thoroughly rinse, and I would wash the car again to neutralize any left over residue. If that still doesn't work, it means the water spots have started etching deeper and you would need to machine polish the surface at that point. Some times, the water spotting is so severe that you also need water sanding steps. And then machine polishing.

I have a ceramic coating on my car and other than driving it stays covered up. What I have been using and it works extremely well is Turtle wax 3-1 ceramic detailer. I am constantly touching up the paint almost daily. I don't let water sit on the car for more than a day before I do a quick detail.

Pan, great video. I live in a very dry (low humidity) area, and water spots are enough to drive one crazy. Tried the TW Ice Quick Detailer as a drying aid and wow did that work after taking a leaf blower to the car to clear the most of the water off the surface. Keeping in mind that the TW Ice Shine and Seal AND Ice Spray wax is already on the car so the surface is in primo condition and sheets water very well. I think I just found my new wash method without any streaking or hassles AND without putting too much wax on an already waxed surface since I wash the car weekly. Thanks Pan! Keep the tips and tricks coming! Wish I had a Pan emoticon for "keep it tight, keep it clean" for you buddy!

I just have one thing to say to the beginners (being a beginner myself). If you live in a hot place, DON'T wash your car in the sun. As you start washing your car, you will observe the car surface becoming hot. The soap you apply will dry within a minute. And if you wash your car panel by panel (which will take a long time) you will still get spots while rinsing. As the water dries, it will leave marks. They do come off but drying the car is going to be a task. Since you will have to rub the microfiber towel in to get the spot off, it will definitely cause some swirls. A quick detailer definitely helps. I think for the people who wash their car themselves, a good shampoo and a quick detailer is a must have. The best shampoo I've used is CarPro Reset (it's expensive) and Gyeon quick detailer or Gyeon ceramic detailer are amazing.

It always depends how bad the water spots are and how long they were left unattended on the surface and in the baking hot sun. Washing your car often helps prevent water spots from settling. If you do get water spots, here are the latest three methods in order form less to most aggressive: 1) Less aggressive is a mineral removing shampoo like this: bit.ly/3u2KsmZ 2) One level up in aggression is using a water spot remover like this: bit.ly/3vNKFM9 3) Last level if those two other methods fail is machine polishing (paint correction).

Thank you for this video! I recently got hard water spots on my car and reached out to a local detailer who said their process was to first use a clay bar and said that doesn't usually get all the hard water spots out, so then they would use a mineral deposit remover, and lastly if there were still stubborn spots left, they would do a polish. Do you think it's a big deal that they would do the reverse of your steps #1 (mineral deposit remover) and #2 (clay bar)? Can you explain your comment on not using a clay bar if your car has a ceramic coat? I thought using a clay bar is an essential detailing tool for any basic exterior detail? So, if one were to get a ceramic coat applied and get a detail 6 months later, you wouldn't recommend a clay bar as part of that detail? Lastly, if I'm paying for an exterior detail and ceramic coat, do you think it's fair to ask for the ceramic topper as part of the ceramic coating, or would that be considered an add-on service in your opinion?

The problem I have isn't with the tap water, it's with the daily driver in S.FL that bakes in 95º heat and then a passing downpour, followed by immediate sun and 95º heat. I've been using CQuartz UK 3.0 with a the Last Coat 2.0. It appears that the Last Coat 2.0 is not good at preventing water spots, and I am kind of disappointed. Already have the MDR and I am going to give it shot today.

You are so welcome! Yeah one has to resist the urge of washing a car when it's too hot and sunny outside. That's actually the worse time to do so. Always work in the garage, or at least in the shade on a cool surface, ideally at the very beginning of the day, or very late in the afternoon/evening. Avoid noon as much as possible as that's when the hot is at its hottest/brightest.

Regular washing of your car is the number way to prevent water spots. I also use a water deionizer which has ZERO minerals and thus I never have water spotting issues. If you catch them early on, you can wash the car, and then use a water spot remover like this: bit.ly/3UO1UX4 If the water spots have been left on the surface to cake and bake in the sun for weeks and months, and the water spot remover doesn't work, then the only solution is to machine polish the surface.

I have water spots on my car that has clearly etched into the clearcoat, because using Gyeon Water did not really do much to remove it. Which means that I have to probably resort to cutting and polishing with a machine. If so, what compound and pad do you recommend to use for removing hard water spots? Is one step enough, or is two steps required? Wool/Microfiber/Foam?? And what type of car shampoo do I have to use beforehand? I currently have Adam's Graphene Shampoo but I'm looking for other recommendations. Your knowledge is invaluable. Thank you!
