A tip from an electrician and motor specialist. When you need to extend leads that far, especially with undersized wire, you're better off to put the ESC beside the battery and make the motor leads the long ones. 3 phase AC distributes the current over 3 wires rather than 2, so you effectively get to put the current through 50% more wire area. Additionally, adding the extra inductance on the AC side increases rather than decreases efficiency. When I did some comparative testing on an approximately 24" long plane with batteries in the nose and motor in the rear, I found moving the ESC and extending the motor leads allowed the motor to draw 10% more current with the same motor/prop/ESC combination and resulted in a significant boost to performance.

It could be done with a multi-rotor but you would essentially need two flight controllers, one to make the props spin slowly under water, making use of reversible escs. The other option would be to simply have separate thruster motors for use under water that are simply deactivated by a switch at the same time as the lifting motors are engaged. Sounds like a peter stripol project to me.

Dave Webster mentioned in the comments previously the idea of building a Flite Test wind tunnel. Now if that isn't a FT build video, or a FT/STEM project. A wind tunnel made from home center stuff. Doesn't NASA have a big wind tunnel in Dayton Ohio? Is there a FT video in a visit to a wind tunnel?That pontoon boat has been an unsung hero of several Flite Test videos. Does this flying kayak remind anyone else of a W.I.G. wing in ground effect vechicle? Like the Caspian Sea monster. Had to watch it again, Lol. Hope you are all having a great 4th of July weekend.

Hi flight test, can I suggest you make some sort of straw based smoke wind tunnel so you can test out your designs?! This design you'd find the kayak acts as an inverted lifting body which is dragging you down, a little foam canopy would increase your lifting area by 30+%...

I do understand design, aerodynamics, balance and flight theory, but only fly drones. I have been quite a fan for many years. What you are doing wrong with the Kayak: 1: wiring extension should always be on the ESC to MOTOR side, never on the BATTERY to ESC side. Ripple current will overload the inlet CAPS on the ESC and cause a very early failure, also poor motor performance, and excess motor heat. 2: The Kayak not wanting to rotate, then pitching up in flight is due to the aerodynamic low CP zone on top of the wing moving forward with increased AOA. This happens on all very low aspect ratio wings, and the effect is more pronounced on lifting bodies because of the long speed fore-aft of the surface area, causing that CP to move much further than the CG can compensate for. 3 tractor motors are a good idea as josh said, but in this configuration, it only blows air over the rear wing, so will change CP with power level, in a non linear fashion.

Ah, A flying milk jug. A real kayak weighs roughly 80lbs. I having a real fishing kayak, Thats 13 ft long, Moving it from ponds and lakes by my self is fun. This “kayak” weighs prolly less than 20 pounds and is made out of what people call “Milk jugs” because thats how flimsy they feel.

Great video guys - as usual. FYI: Wires get hot when they're too thin - length really has nothing to do with it. Silicone AWG 14 can typically handle about 45A continuous. That's based purely on the amount of heat generated. You can pump more current through it - but not for long!! She simply gets too hot. Now if your wire length is overly long, you may get excessive volt-drop at full throttle. That can cause all sorts of strange problems. So in this instance it would be worth considering increasing the wire size to AWG 12, or even AWG 10. Rob

You finally realized that seat-of-the-pants won't do it, re electrical loads. Welcome to our century. Go, at once, to the web and look up "wire gauges" or "Brown & Sharp Wire Gauges". This is the law that the entire construction industry of the U.S. uses. I know it by harp, as do many, many other people. Learn it! It's the most simple of rules.
