For anyone wondering, steam at 100*C at 1 atmosphere of pressure is 1600x less dense than water, so when water boils into steam and gets heated much further it can give pretty explosive results.

Depends on how rapidly the heat is put into the water, The latent heat of vapourisation needs to be overcome first. Saying that water on contact with a medium of above ca 380 degrees celsius can be explosive. Boiling kettles do not explode.

I think this is similar to what is happening in the subduction zones. An oceanic tectonic plate drags water from the ocean and traps it underneath a continental plate. Once it gets heated the resulting pressure causes magma to rise and create volcanoes..

For those familiar with the physics of volcanoes, this is not a surprise. Water is one of the major "Volatiles" in magma and its thermodynamic characteristics can create very powerful eruptions and severe explosions. In Hawaii, molten lava flows entering the ocean from a distant volcano can create explosions that are sometimes as bad as those at the vent itself.

The water evaporates as soon as it gets close or on the surface of the lava, this means there is no water evaporating beneath the lava to create pressure caused by steam as shown in the video. for anyone wondering, this amount of heat combined with the water at ambient temperature create something called “superheated vapor” which is basically water that exceeds the temperature and vapor pressure of water at its normal boiling point at ambient atmospheric pressure. this energy creates a highly pressurized and energetic vapor/gas that is incredibly powerful. :) the almost nonexistent temperature gradient (going from cool to incredibly hot almost instantly) adds to this effect and the energy is released much quicker and more erratically

Water turns to steam and expands when heated. The payload submerged in the lava because of the time it took to melt the container, so the steam had a layer of material above it to fling away as it expanded. Also, water is part hydrogen and oxygen which both could act as fuel for the heat induced chemical reactions in the lava. Some of it must have infused and mixed in with the molten rock, temporarily lightening its texture. This must be why the lava pool got "invigorated". You fed it fuel.

55fragger This can be easily explained by thermodynamics. Lava has a high temperature and when it mixes with water, the product has a very sudden increase in "enthalpy" or explosive capability. The worst volcanic explosions have been caused by water intrusion into the magma column or a lava "sill" that has intruded into ground water.

@@joecausey8508 its the water trapped in the can, because it ends deep in the lava it all evaporates and expands at insane and "explosive rates" creating a lot of activity in lava, if you'd be pouring a bucket ontop it'd be explosive as well but much less so in the activity of the lava itself but just the instant evaporation of the water

The expansion of water to steam is 1:1700. The velocity of the jug isn't terminal, but let's say 45 to 55 mph upon impact. The high viscosity of the lava allows the jug to penetrate 30-50' and the outside carbonizes giving it time to sink further. Once the inside of the jug reaches a flash boil the outside pressure collapses upon the water, instantly flashing the water to steam. Creating a very real explosion that causes the water and steam to scatter, causing more flash expansions, cascading into the release of the steam at the surface. Goes to show you what superheated steam is capable of. Great video!

Good example of what steam can do. For example, Chernobyl was one large steam explosion, but somehow many people believe it was some kind of a nuclear (imploding???) explosion. It was a huge steam explosion that scattered already melting nuclear particles all the way to hell and back. Steam power is quite incredible considering what it can do if it gets out of control.
