Oh!! When i work with guache i go in super opaque. My look is kind of cartoony so it lends itself to that very well, whereas working in layers means i csnt build up colour blocks super well. I think it super depends on ur style :))

@@Eggthedreg yeah I basically just use it like watercolor. old Bob Ross videos will tell you thin paints will stick to thick paints but that might only apply to oil paint...

@@MidoriMushrooms I've only dabbled in watercolour and acrylic, but I think for acrylics it's similar to oil paints. Too thick layers in acrylic can crack and flake off, regardless of what's underneath, though.

It's between 2 and 3 for me, depending on the vibe. 2 is a huge step up in contrast and interest compared to 1, while 3 gets dark and dramatic while 2 stays a bit lighter and brighter.

I really like how watercolors looks more "homogenous" when it dries! I feel like here no layer was wasted, sure the two last one looks pretty similar but I feel like we can feel an added "depth". Most of all I really like the "scratches" and strikes you did on the lightened side, it's really expressive and beautifull, the small detail that put the whole together in my opinion! I really appreciate that each time you demonstrate something you do a whole detailed painting, you could do swatches, put down rectangles next to each other and demonstrate layering but here we get a real idea of concrete application it's way better!!! (plus we get to admire your style:)) I feel like each blueberry I see is better than the last one! Always nice to fall on one of your short:)

I think the 3rd one looks the most realistic if painting a setting, the 4th is a bit dark but would probably work better in a shadier setting. The first one works if you're just trying to get across that it's a blueberry or if you're using it for decorating a card or something, and the second works nicely for decoration too, with that extra added but of shading.

i’m just getting into watercolor (and i have a much more graphic cartoonish style as i come from digital art) but i’ve found you really don’t need more than 2 layers for shadow. i really like cel shading so my style takes inspiration from that, and i use a lot of blocky colors without much gradient, so it’s really beneficial for me to do one layer of pigmented shadow to avoid overcomplicating the painting and confusing the viewer. (of course the value of the shadow isn’t consistent throughout the whole painted but you get the idea)

I think the 4 layer method or even a 5 layer method has its place because it sacrifices the realistic feel of the 2 and 3 layer version for a more muted, moody feel with the impressions of fine detail to add contrast. Sure there isn't a huge amount of change in value after layer 3, but there is a change to the way the finished product feels. Its like the opposite of the airy impressionist feel you get from alla prima watercolor. I'm a fan personally.

Can I just say, I LOVE your blueberry?! It made my heart melt because it reminded me of a story. Many years ago, my mom signed me, my grandmother, my little brother and her all up for a basic beginners drawing class. We were all the artistic/creative ones in the family and thought it would be fun just do something we enjoyed together. As soon as we got there, my grandmother announced that all she hoped to get out of the class was to learn how to draw a blueberry. I laughed, not to make fun of her, but because I thought that was the cutest thing ever that of all things in the whole world, that all she cared to want to learn how to draw, was a tiny blueberry! Apparently it was for a craft project she wanted to do and we all took turns trying to show her how to draw one. It made for some really good memories with her. She passed away to cancer many years ago. I still think of her everyday and miss her. But anytime I see a blueberry like this in someone’s artwork, it warms my heart and reminds me of that day I got to spend with her! It was such a simple thing, yet so meaningful to me.
